Announcing the nominees for their 16th annual Ves Awards, the Visual Effects Society brought welcome news for Denis Villeneuve’s “Blade Runner 2049” and Matt Reeves’s “War for the Planet of the Apes,” each up for seven statuettes. “Despicable Me 3” is the most-nominated animated film of the year (5), while the most-honored title overall is “Game of Thrones” (11).

In 2017, Disney’s “The Jungle Book” remake claimed five Ves trophies, more than any other feature (nominations leader “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” was shutout). It’s director-producer, Jon Favreau, will receive this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award; Weta Digital director and four-time Oscar winner Joe Letteri will accept the Georges Méliès Award, named for the late French illusionist and filmmaker. The Visual Effects supervisor on The Twilight Saga: New Moon has revealed how they created the supernatural imagery for Robert Pattinson's vampire character Edward Cullen.
Susan MacLeod worked on making Edward's skin sparkle in sunlight and turning him into an apparition that appears before Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart).
She explained how they devised the look of the hallucinatory image, revealing: "We didn't want anything scary, because he is sort of the romanticised memory in Bella's mind of the love of her life that she's lost. I came at it with wanting a touchstone from the natural world and my first thought was water.
"So I pitched that to [director] Chris [Weitz] and he suggested fire but not fire like an inferno but like a flame, like Bella is holding a torch for Edward. I thought it was a nice metaphor. And flame and water have similar sorts of essences to them...

The Twilight Saga: New Moon began shooting in March 2009 in Vancouver and ended in Montepulciano, an ancient walled city in Italy. The two cities provided a strong contrast—the dark nights and mysterious, deep green forests of British Columbia, and the organic, burnished tones of Tuscany inform the film’s look equally. “The light in the Pacific Northwest provides a great deal of diffusion and coolness,” Chris Weitz says. “Within that, there are plenty of beautiful colors, and our intention was to use the lion’s share of them. Shadows are also important —the forest at night, the blackness of depression. “The light is much different in Tuscany,” Weitz notes. “It has much warmer tones and is literally much sunnier, with pops of color from the costumes. The architecture is different as well. Montepulciano is known for its Renaissance architecture, with remnants of medieval architecture as well.” Production designer David Brisbin...

Screenwriting prodigy-turned-attractive vampire Nikki Reed appeared at the Hamilton Behind the Camera Awards on Sunday not just to herald Susan MacLeod for her visual effects work, but to gab a bit with Movieline about the upcoming Twilight: New Moon and next year's Twilight: Eclipse. The 21-year-old who once co-wrote Thirteen (using her own scary teen experiences as source material) believes her Twilight role Rosalie Hale will receive necessary color in the coming installments -- some of it even more gruesome than Thirteen's drug-addled fist-fights. Clip after the jump.

Nikki Reed was fresh off her long press weekend supporting New Moon but got dressed up last night to pose with costar Anna Kendrick at MovieLine's Behind the Camera Awards in La. They joined adorable couple Joshua Jackson and Diane Kruger, who's back to focusing on film after her fashion-related party earlier in the week. Nikki and Anna were on hand to honor their special effects editor Susan MacLeod, and Diane came out on behalf of Inglourious Basterds producer Lawrence Bender. Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel, meanwhile, presented their (500) Days of Summer screenwriters with statues. The event was designed to honor those who labor behind the scenes, but the well-dressed ladies couldn't help but take a little bit of the spotlight. MoviesOnline sat down recently with director Chris Weitz, screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg, and producer Wyck Godfrey to talk about their new movie, “The Twilight Saga: New Moon.”
Director Chris Weitz’s success at adapting books for the screen, including “About A Boy” and “The Golden Compass,” made him an obvious choice for this project, says Wyck Godfrey, who produced both “Twilight” and “New Moon.” “Chris has a history of helming fantasy films with complex effects as well as intimate character studies, and he works well with young actors. But it is his appreciation of Stephenie Meyer’s books and characters that made him the perfect director for “The Twilight Saga: New Moon.”
Melissa Rosenberg is proving to be one of Hollywood’s most versatile and sought-after writers, seamlessly transitioning from television to the silver screen. She wrote the screenplay for the vampire romance phenomenon “Twilight” directed by Catherine Hardwicke based on...

Throughout her career in visual effects -- starting with 1995's Die Hard With a Vengeance and most recently with 2007's The Golden Compass -- Susan MacLeod has been around the blockbuster more a few times, but never as a visual effects supervisor, and likely never on a project surrounded by as much anticipation as this month's New Moon. Having served as Chris Weitz's VFX producer on the Oscar-winning Compass, MacLeod was one of the first colleagues the director called after taking on the sequel to Twilight. She eventually came aboard as the film's VFX supervisor, battling wolves, vampires, apparitions and more in her and her crew's race to realize novelist Stephenie Meyer's bestseller on a wild 10-month schedule. MacLeod spoke with Movieline today about getting creative, working fast, and a few hints at what fans can expect from New Moon.
