This article contains spoilers for "True Detective: Night Country" episode 2.
After three seasons, show creator Nic Pizzolatto has stepped away from "True Detective," clearing the way for new showrunner Issa López. The writer/director of 2017's excellent "Tigers Are Not Afraid" has created what might be the best season of "True Detective" since the original, restoring cosmic horror elements to the show and bringing back plenty of the dense philosophizing that Matthew McConaughey's Rust Cohle provided in season 1.
It seems that the inaugural season was a big influence on López, who has spoken about trying to emulate the tone of Pizzolatto's Louisiana noir. However, the new showrunner also found that her rewatch of season 1 led her to another influence: David Fincher's 1995 film "Seven." As she told the "Movies That Made Me" podcast, "What immediately hit me is how similar ['True Detective' season 1] is to 'Seven,'...

With a love of cinema woven into its DNA, The Monster Squad helped indoctrinate ’80s kids to the classic monsters. The generation that grew up watching it on home video and HBO look back on the 1987 film with the same reverence director Fred Dekker had for the Universal monster movies, and now they’re passing it down in a similar fashion. There’s no better way to introduce the next generation than with the new 4K edition.
Conceived as “The Little Rascals meets the Universal Monsters,” the cleverly-plotted film clocks in at a tight 82 minutes. The punchy script by Dekker and Shane Black doesn’t have an ounce of fat on it, save for the casual homophobia, misogyny, and body shaming of the time. Drawing inspiration from Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, human characters offer well-placed levity and a bevy of memorable one-liners, but the monsters are played straight.

Another spooky season has come and very nearly gone. The leaves are changing colors, the days are getting shorter (and colder), and it's time to start gearing up for the annual end-of-year rush of awards players. Not that that's any reason to stop the scary times from going. If you're like me, you'll probably spend the first part of November just catching up on all the spine-chilling entertainment you had intended to get to in October (there's just too darn much to cram into a single month -- I only barely got started on the new "Goosebumps" series). Of course, if you'd prefer to get a head-start on the winter holidays, you could instead tune in to Max, which will be adding plenty of beloved festive titles over the next few weeks, and much more.
Here are our top picks for November, along with everything else that's coming to the streamer that month.

No other mass criminal or cult figure in American history has garnered as much fascination within Hollywood and popular culture as Charles Manson (though Ted Bundy is coming close). He and his “family” have been the subject of movies, parodies, and he even landed a Rolling Stone cover. “American Horror Story: Cult” had an actor portraying Manson, and Quentin Tarantino is digging up the past for his “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” featuring the Manson Family murders. Here is a sampling of actors who have dared to play the notorious figure.
Steve Railsback – “Helter Skelter” (1976)
The memory of Manson was still fresh when this TV special based on Vincent Bugliosi’s book was aired. CBS even made it a two-night special.
Michael Reid MacKay – “Summer Dreams: The Story of the Beach Boys” (1990)
This TV special about the career of the Beach Boys explored Manson’s relationship with Beach Boys member Dennis Wilson.

Undoubtedly, one of the most beloved genre movies to come out of 1987 was Fred Dekker’s The Monster Squad, a perfect blend of humor, heart, and affection for the classic monsters so many of us grew up on. And while it may not have done great business at the box office when it was released in August of that year, The Monster Squad has deservedly become a true cult classic, and remains a brilliant gateway horror experience for younger viewers who are just becoming initiated in the ways of genre cinema.
With The Monster Squad’s 30th anniversary nearly upon us, and with our “Class of 1987” celebration currently in full swing, I thought this would make for a splendid opportunity to chat with the actors who put the “Monster” in “The Monster Squad” in the first place: Tom Noonan (“Frankenstein’s Monster”), Duncan Regehr (“Count Dracula”), Tom Woodruff Jr. (“the...

A girl walking with a friend late at night turns and looks down the street only to notice an odd figure in the dark, waving. The camera keeps us far enough away we have to really focus to make out any details on what it is in the distance. "What is thatc" we ask ourselves realizing we'd seen something similar only minutes earlier. All goes silent when... Wham!!! The first of many, many, many, many jump scares ensure you'll be on guard throughout the 97-minute duration of Insidious: Chapter 3. Strangely enough, for as often as I would ding a movie for its use of this cheap tactic, it feels rather organic to this third chapter's narrative, but more on that in a second. The first film in the Insidious franchise was something I referred to as an "homage to PG-13 horror" when it hit theaters in 2011. It mixed today's...

If there's one thing Leigh Whannell learned from William Friedkin about directing horror movies, it's this: you have to scare your actors for real. Flash back to early 2014. Whannell has signed on to direct "Insidious: Chapter 3," a prequel to 2010's "Insidious" and 2013's "Insidious: Chapter 2," both helmed by his longtime creative partner James Wan. It's his directorial debut. He's anxious and looking for guidance, so he tweets at Friedkin asking for his advice. Friedkin responds within just a few minutes. Friedkin invites him out to lunch. "It was surreal," says Whannell, chatting with reporters on the "Insidious: Chapter 3" set in Lake View Terrace, CA alongside cast members Dermot Mulroney, Stefanie Scott, Lin Shaye, Angus Sampson and producer James Blum. "He comes and he sits down. I'd never met the guy. And he barely said hello. He was just like, 'First of all, you've got to scare your actors for real.

I hadn't seen David Fincher's Gone Girl before creating this list. I felt I'd let his latest film simmer for a bit before attempting to figure out where exactly it fit within a filmography that now spans 22 years. I must also confess to being a David Fincher fanboy. It was Fincher's films before any other that got me to start looking at the way movies were made and who was making them rather than simply consuming one after the other. His leaning toward dark and brooding material is as much about his taste in the movies he makes and his approach to movie making. Even with films such as The Social Network, looking at the fellas behind the creation of Facebook, Fincher delivers a dark, moody and atmospheric piece of cinema. But let's not spoil the conversation of each film before getting to the list. What follows is...

In the first "Wizard of Oz" movie, Dorothy sure wasn't in Kansas anymore -- but in Todd McFarlane's proposed reimagining of the franchise, it's unclear if Dorothy is even in Oz anymore.
Based on his "Twisted Land of Oz" action figure line, McFarlane's upcoming "Wizard of Oz" film promises a lot more mayhem and mischief than a winged monkey could ever muster, and you don't have to take McFarlane's word for it -- the action figures themselves speak volumes about this dark and dangerous new Oz.
Given the horrifying look of the toys, it's tough to imagine who could play these mangled versions of L. Frank Baum's classic characters -- but that's not stopping me from trying! After the jump, check out the five actors that I'd like to see in McFarlane's new "Oz" film.
