Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band kicked off their Sunday night set in Kilkenny, Ireland, by covering the 1986 Pogues classic “A Right Night in Soho” as a tribute to the late Shane MacGowan. It marked the first time in their history they covered a Pogues song.
When MacGowan died in November 2023, Springsteen penned a tribute. “Shane was one of my all-time favorite writers,” he wrote. “The passion and deep intensity of his music and lyrics is unmatched by all but the very best in the rock and roll canon.

Earlier this month, Nick Cave paid tribute to his longtime friend, The Pogues’ Shane MacGowan, by performing a cover of “A Rainy Night in Soho” at MacGowan’s funeral. Now, Cave has honored the late Irish songwriter again by penning an obituary for The Guardian, published on Thursday, December 21st.
After explaining how he and MacGowan first met — a “summit” organized by NME to bring the two writers, plus The Fall’s Mark E. Smith, together — Cave touched on the early days of the two’s friendship. “I was excited [to meet him] because I was a fan, completely in awe of Shane’s songwriting,” he wrote. “Unfortunately, it was my first day out of rehab, and it probably wasn’t the greatest idea to spend the day with two people who were not known for their moderation… Not the most auspicious start to a friendship, but Shane and I did become close friends soon afterwards.

The Pogues’ “Fairytale of New York” has been a left-field Christmas classic since Shane MacGowan and Kirsty MacColl first sang it in 1987, but this year — three weeks after MacGowan’s death (and 23 years since MacColl’s) — the song feels more maudlin. The Libertines recently gave the song a couple of performances in tribute.
In the first, the group’s Pete Doherty and Carl Barât recorded a typically free-wheeling performance and posted it to Instagram, leaning deep into the tune’s natural sodden sentimentality. “Rip Shane, this one’s for you,...

Talking Heads mastermind/general purveyor of good vibes, David Byrne, is celebrating the holiday season with a Christmas playlist he curated for NPR’s Fresh Air series. The 19-track collection truly has a little something for everyone, ranging from classics by The Pogues and Paul Simon to more contemporary carols from the likes of Phoebe Bridgers and even 100 gecs.
Though Talking Heads were never interested in making a holiday album of their own — “If doesn’t click, you’ve just got this embarrassing thing,” the frontman explained to NPR — Byrne’s playlist does include “Fat Man’s Comin’,” a solo song he released last year in which he gives a very literal interpretation of Santa Claus. “Here’s a stranger who’s sneaking, breaking into your house, basically, leaving packages — and dressed in a rather strange outfit,” Byrne remembered of writing the track. “I thought, what if I just write that?...

Shane MacGowan was known to enjoy an adult beverage or two — or ten. As mourners celebrated his life, the Pogues frontman made sure the drinks kept on flowing, as he left behind more than $12,000 to pay for the bar tab at his wake.

In the streets outside of the church, mourners joined in unison to sing some of MacGowan’s most beloved songs with The Pogues. Inside, Nick Cave gave an emotional rendition of “A Rainy Night in Soho,” and Glen Hansard and Lisa O’Neill teamed up for a rousing performance of “Fairytale of New York.”
Fittingly, MacGowan’s band delivered the final performance of the ceremony, as Spider Stacy led The Pogues’ surviving members in a rendition of “The Parting Glass.” It marked the band’s first time playing together since 2014.
MacGowan died on Thursday, November 30th at the age of 65 from what was later revealed to be complications from pneumonia and viral encephalitis. See further tributes to MacGowan from Tom Waits, Bruce Springsteen, and Bono, and read our very own Jonah Krueger...

Jason Kelce, All-Pro center for the Philadelphia Eagles, and his brother, Travis Kelce, All-Pro tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs, recently teamed up to cover The Pogues’ seminal Christmas song, “Fairytale of New York.” Now, in light of Shane MacGowan’s passing, Jason Kelce is paying tribute to the Pogues singer.
“Shane’s prowess as a singer, songwriter, and poet was truly a gift to this world. He could make you feel what he was saying, attaching his soul to his music,” Kelce said in a statement to Consequence. “‘Fairytale of New York’ has long been one of my favorite songs (not just Christmas songs), as it gets to the roots of love, anger, resentment, sacrifice, and ultimately companionship. It lays out what relationships really are, that they are something bigger than yourself; and with Christmas time as the background, the theme works all too well. It was an...

Raise a farewell toast for Shane MacGowan, one of rock’s most fiendishly brilliant growlers, snarlers, songwriters, storytellers, and blackguards. Shane was the resident Celt-punk genius of The Pogues, one of the great Irish bards of his or any other era, which is why the world is mourning his death on Thursday. But Shane’s demise has been predicted so many times, over 65 years of hard living, it’s bizarrely shocking that the end has finally come. Hell, in one of his best-loved songs, “The Sick Bed of Cuchulain,” he interrupts his own funeral,...

Shane MacGowan’s passing has led to an outpouring of tributes from fellow musicians.
“Every time I heard him sing I heard the truth, and my heart filled up with humanity,” wrote Flea of Red Hot Chili Peppers. He proceeded to share an anecdote about the time he met the Pogues singer: “I once saw him sing with the Pogues at a festival in the late 80’s. It was so beautiful and I was reduced to tears. I approached him, and gushed “Man that was so beautiful, thank you etc…” He looked at me and burst into laughter, accidentally spitting beer in my face, and it was not thoughtless or mean at all, he was just so humble and being a dude singing it seemed absurd to him to be elevated, like I was doing to him. Nobody in the history of music ever sounded quite as decadently downtrodden (or whiskey-drowned, -sodden) as Shane MacGowan on “Fairytale of New York,” the soppy Christmas carol the Pogues’ first released as a single in 1987. But as the luck of the Irish would have it, Kirsty MacColl was fortuitously available to take the piss right out of him. When he sings, “I could have been someone,” she rejoins with the perfect uppercut: “Well, so could anyone.” The witty repartee and the song’s sing-along merriment made it an instant hit in Ireland,...

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band’s world tour takes them to Dublin this weekend for three shows at the Rds Arena. Prior to hitting the stage, Springsteen connected with some locals at a town pub.
Springsteen grabbed a drink at The Burrow in Rathangan, Co. Kildare, and even led the patrons in an impromptu a cappella performance of “My Hometown.” His choice of song was rather poetic, as Springsteen’s ancestral roots trace back to Rathangan.
While in Ireland, Springsteen also paid a visit to the Dublin home of Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan. MacGowan’s wife, Victoria Mary Clarke, shared a photo of the two musicians with the caption: “What an amazing honour and a beautiful experience to get a visit from The Boss.
