Most of the movies we’ve enjoyed over the last hundred years consist of 24 frames per second, but we’ve seen directors experiment with a high-frame-rate more and more. One director who has pushed Hfr to its limits is Ang Lee, who shot his last two movies, Billy Lynn’s Halftime Walk and Gemini Man, at 120fps. When it was announced that Ang Lee would be directing a Bruce Lee movie, many expected that he would once again shoot the film at 120fps; after all, Bruce Lee was known for his lightning-fast moves, which a traditional camera could barely pick up. Our own Chris Bumbray recently spoke with Ang Lee about the upcoming re-release of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, where the director revealed that he will not be shooting the Bruce Lee movie in Hfr.

Ang Lee has cast his son Mason Lee to play the iconic Chinese-American martial artist and actor Bruce Lee in Sony’s 3000 Pictures’ new biopic.
The Oscar-winning filmmaker has reportedly been working on the film Bruce Lee quietly for a long time. There have been different versions of scripts from four writers before the most recent one by Dan Futterman who’s the Oscar-nominated Capote screenwriter.
“Accepted as neither fully American nor fully Chinese, Bruce Lee was a bridge between East and West who introduced Chinese kung fu to the world, a scientist of combat and an iconic performing artist who revolutionized both the martial arts and action cinema,” said Ang Lee in a statement. “I feel compelled to tell the story of this brilliant, unique human being who yearned for belonging, possessed tremendous power in a 135-pound-frame, and who, through tireless hard work, made impossible dreams into reality.”

Oscar-winning director Ang Lee, known for helming ‘Life of Pi’ and ‘Brokeback Mountain’, is set to direct a film about Chinese American martial arts legend Bruce Lee.
Ang Lee’s son Mason Lee will star in the film, which is in development at Sony’s 3000 Pictures.
Dan Futterman, who wrote ‘Capote’ and ‘Foxcatcher’, is adapting the script. Jean Castelli, Alex Law and Mabel Cheung and Wells Tower wrote earlier versions of the screenplay, reports ‘Variety’.
Bruce Lee, who died in 1973 at the age of 32, had a brief but lasting presence in Hollywood as an actor, director and martial arts expert.
His films, including ‘Fist of Fury’, ‘Enter the Dragon’ and ‘The Way of the Dragon’, as well as the TV series ‘The Green Hornet’, popularised martial arts across the globe in the late 1960s and early ’70s.

Following Life of Pi, released a decade ago this fall, Ang Lee dabbled in the transportive cinematic technical experiments Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk and Gemini Man that, unfortunately, failed to connect with audiences. The director is now set to return with a film that should hopefully garner some widespread attention.
Deadline reports he will direct Bruce Lee, a biopic of the legendary martial artist and actor, who will be played by Ang Lee’s own son Mason Lee. Set up at Sony Pictures and currently being scripted by Dan Futterman.
Ang Lee is no stranger to the world of martial arts with his record-breaking Oscar-winner Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. For quite some time he tried to get his 3D Muhammad Ali fight film off the ground, but it never saw the light of day, so we’ll be curious to see if any technology or planning developed for...

Cahiers du cinéma’s Top 10 Films of 2017 Includes ‘Twin Peaks: The Return,’ ‘Split,’ and ‘Good Time’
Established in the 1950s by André Bazin, Joseph-Marie Lo Duca, and Jacques Doniol-Valcroze, France’s Cahiers du cinéma has long been a bastion for quality film criticism. Year after year their rundown of the top films usually ignites a response, and we doubt 2017 will be any different — mostly notably when it comes to their top “film,” and perhaps a few other inclusions.
They’ve released their latest list, which includes a few films that won’t get a U.S. release until 2018 (Jeannette, The Day After, Lover for a Day). Also among the selections are some of this year’s finest films, Get Out and Good Time, as well as David Lynch’s 18-hour Twin Peaks: The Return, which also made Sight & Sound’s poll. Since they got a release in France this year, Certain Women, Jackie, and Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk also made the cut.

Neither Taylor Swift nor Joe Alwyn have spoken publicly about their relationship, but the singer is giving the public a peek into their private world on her new album Reputation.
Her previously released tracks “Call It What You Want” and “Gorgeous” were seemingly inspired by Alwyn, and the other emotional and sexy love songs on the album put to rest any doubt she’s happier than ever in her personal life.
“Delicate” appears to have been written or inspired by the start of a relationship, much like “Gorgeous.”

Swifties weren’t ready for it, but the newly released music video for “…Ready for It?” contains specific Easter eggs and could be validating some popular fan theories. Let the games begin!
In the anime-inspired visual, Taylor Swift plays with themes seen in sci-fi films such as Tron and Blade Runner as well as Ghost in the Shell, specifically Major Motoko’s cyborg shell. A little bit of the video game franchise, Final Fantasy, perhaps?
And the latest Joseph Kahn-directed footage even contains follow-up references originally made in the “Look What You Made Me Do” video as well as her past music videos.

“Blade Runner 2049” is going to struggle to make it past the $100 million mark at the domestic box office, hardly the response Warner Bros. was looking for given the film’s estimated $300 million production and marketing budget. In a way, the odds were always against “2049” given that its predecessor was also a financial disappointment and only went on to become a cult classic with a very specific demographic of moviegoers. “Blade Runner” is no multi-generational favorite a la “Star Wars” or “Jurassic Park.”
But while the sequel is a box office dud, it’s unquestionably a huge step in the right direction for studio filmmaking.

With the 2017 edition of the New York Film Festival kicking off tonight, IndieWire’s Eric Kohn, Kate Erbland, and David Ehrlich trade thoughts on the quality of this year’s lineup — and who the festival is supposed to serve.
Eric Kohn: Among the 15 of the 25 films I’ve seen in the Nyff main slate — not counting the additional titles in Projections and Spotlight on Documentary — nothing stands out to me as a truly provocative choice. But before I get into that, I should point out that this is not a knock on the bulk of Nyff’s neatly curated lineup, which showcases some of the most exciting new work from many of the world’s strongest auteurs.

Peter Morgan (“The Queen”) has long divided his time between playwriting, screenwriting, and television. But having just wrapped the second 10-episode season for Netflix’s “The Crown” (December 8), the executive producer and showrunner is now wholly devoted to a new genre that he calls “cinematic television.”
It’s not a difficult transition. “The Crown” has the scale of a big-budget production (Netflix paid in advance for two seasons, as well as bonuses to buy out all future royalties), as well as serious awards gravitas: The first season scored a Golden Globe win for Claire Foy and now has 13 Emmy nominations, and could win the fierce contest for Best Dramatic Series.

Rising star Joe Alwyn, who starred in Ang Lee's Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, has been cast opposite Margot Robbie and Saoirse Ronan in Mary Queen of Scots.

Rachel Weisz is no stranger to filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos’ unique charms and tastes, starring in his English-language debut “The Lobster” alongside a transformed Colin Farrell to deliver one of the decade’s most unexpected, weird, funny, and just plain lovely romances. Weisz is re-teaming with Lanthimos on his next offering, “The Favourite,” a historical feature that, on paper, sounds decidedly unlike the Greek filmmaker’s previous efforts, often referred to as part of the so-called Greek Weird Wave.
Officially described as a “bawdy, acerbic tale of royal intrigue, passion, envy, and betrayal,” Lanthimos’ latest film is set in 18th century England during the court of Queen Anne (played by Colman). Weisz plays Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough and confidante, advisor, best friend, and secret lover to the Queen. Their long-standing relationship is threatened when Sarah’s younger cousin Abigail (played by Emma Stone) comes to court, leading to a battle...

Yorgos Lanthimos has completed shooting his juicy period drama “The Favourite,” starring Academy Award winner Rachel Weisz, Academy Award winner Emma Stone, and Golden Globe winner Olivia Colman (“The Lobster”). Gemini Man was a film project originally set up at Disney way back in 1997. The movie has been in and out of development for years and has never been made because it was considered unfilmable for years because of the VFX work that it needed to get made. The technology to make it just didn't really exist until now.
Life of Pi and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon director Ang Lee is now in talks to helm the film for Skydance Media. This seems like it could be a great project for him to work on.
According to THR, the story centers on "an aging assassin who tried to get out of the business but finds himself in the ultimate battle: fighting his own clone who is 25 years younger than him and at the peak of his abilities."

Here’s a pairing that probably never occurred to you: Ang Lee and David Benioff. Variety reports that the two-time Best Director winner is in talks to direct the sci-fi-action film “Gemini Man,” which has been in one stage of development or another for a full 20 years. The most recent iteration would have seen “L.A. Confidential” director Curtis Hanson working with a script from Benioff, the co-creator and -showrunner of “Game of Thrones.”

Variety reports that Ang Lee might have lined up his next project, with the celebrated visual artist circling a script for an early project from Game Of Thrones co-showrunner David Benioff, titled Gemini Man.
Rather than the story of one of the trippier bosses from Mega Man 3, though, the script is a spy thriller, centered on an older assassin who discovers that his bosses have sent a younger clone of himself to kill him. Despite the sci-fi premise, the whole idea seems weirdly conventional for Lee, but it’s possible he’s just looking for some straightforward genre work after the resounding commercial flop of his last feature, Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk.

Memory is a funny thing. One can feel so certain of one’s own memories that it is jarring when others’ recollection of events does not match.
The tricks of memory are at the heart of the unforgettable The Sense Of An Ending, director Ritesh Batra’s screen adaptation of Julian Barnes’ short novel. In this American/British film, Jim Broadbent stars as Tony Webster, a curmudgeonly older man who lives alone, opening his tiny camera repair shop daily and seeming to live a joyless existence. His shop only sells and repairs old Leica cameras, and he seems to regard the occasional customer more as an interruption than the reason for this business. His dull routine is interrupted by the arrival of a letter, informing him he as been left something in a will.

Jon Favreau knows a thing or two about making movie magic, but virtual reality could soon change filmmaking forever.
The Iron Man director-producer was honored at the eighth annual Lumiere Awards, which celebrate the year’s best achievements in cutting-edge technology like virtual reality and 3D, at Warner Brothers Studios Monday. And this was no typical awards show — guests were able to try out Vr for themselves at the various booths inside showcasing the nominees.
Favreau, who accepted the Harold Lloyd Award, tells People that he feels the emerging technology is just a new vehicle for entertainment that can complement and enrich the moviegoing experience.

Ang Lee's latest film is an unconventional film being distributed, on the whole, in a very conventional way...
In the race to set forth the future of cinema through various technological advances, Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk feels like a major casualty. Once tipped for the Oscar race, the latest film from Ang Lee has bombed at the worldwide box office and been all but ignored by critics and awards bodies. This is partly due to complications in exhibiting the film in its intended format, because cinemas haven't adapted for this war drama as they did for major blockbusters of recent years.
Avatar successfully made the case for 3D, like the gift of fire from James Cameron to studio arsonists who post-converted every tentpole movie in sight, while Peter Jackson's Hobbit films were less successful in pioneering higher frame rates, inadvertently exposing the actors' make-up and making the audience dizzy.
