Actress Deepika Padukone does not consider her upcoming release "Chhapaak" to be a risky project, despite the fact that she plays the central role of an acid attack survivor in the real life-inspired film.
"People are saying that we have taken a big risk, but I don't think of this (film) as a risk. It is something that she (the film's director Meghna Gulzar) has lived with for so many years. As a human being and a director, she was ready to tell the story. She came to me with it and I instantly said yes to the film, so there hasn't been over-thinking or over-processing. I think whatever we have done to make this film was done very instantly and instinctively, and with a lot of heart. We want people to receive this film the way we have made it," said Deepika, at the title song launch of the...

Actress Kangana Ranaut says indulging in violence over Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAA) is not a very reasonable thing to do, in a democracy like India.
"What gives you the right to burn buses, trains and create ruckus in the country? A bus costs around Rs 70-80 lakh, and that is not a small amount. Have you seen the condition of people in our country? People in this country are dying of hunger and malnutrition. It is not very reasonable for people to indulge in violence," said Kangana.

"I also feel that in the name of democracy -- this is my very personal opinion -- we're still hooked to the pre-Independence era, where our country was under seige or bondage, and people had captured us by force or the gun. Going on strikes, shutting down the country or not paying taxes against those people was considered cool.

Winner of the Grand Prix de Montreal at the 21st Festival International du Film Pour Enfants de Montréal Film (Fifem), “Relief” is a rather unusual children’s film, both for the central concept and the general style, which, after a fashion, functions as a parody of Hollywood movies and a rather pointy satire of the Indian ways.
“Relief” runs as part of the 9th edition of the Bagri Foundation London Indian Film Festival, that runs at 15 cinemas, across London, Birmingham and Manchester, from 21st June to 1st July, with 27 films, including features and short films, in competition. It is the largest South Asian film festival in Europe. Buy your tickets via this website, at respective cinema box offices: http://londonindianfilmfestival.co.uk/

There’s a good reason why epic love stories are almost always set in ancient times. Something about how we can only conjure these bygone eras in our imaginations allows us to fully buy into the grandeur, magnitude and theatrics that usually characterize these sagas. It’s rare to successfully make that level of passion and scale hold up in a modern day framework. While director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and writer Gulzar are particularly good bets for storytellers who can try — the former blurred the lines between past and present in his BAFTA-nominated “Rang De Basanti,” while the latter has been penning screenplays and song lyrics since 1960 — even the duo can’t quite make it work with “Mirzya.” The film’s contemporary setting does little to enhance the age-old tale at Mirzya’s core or make it approachable for current audiences.

Rakesh Omprakash Mehra’s Mirzya. After watching a stage performance of Mirza-Sahibhan 35 years ago, Mirzya was born. I had the privilege of watching this film a week in advance. I have avoided all publicity about this film as I didn’t want to go in with any expectations. This is difficult in a way as this is a Rakesh Omprakash Mehra directed film. He is back since the incredibly successful Bhaag Milka Bhaag. I have sat with my thoughts of this film for four days. Normally I don’t. Normally reviews as far as they go are fairly straight forward. This one isn’t. Why? Well there are so many different elements to it and you just need a little bit of time to make your mind up about it.
Let us start with the much talked about music. Shankar Ehsaan and Loy do something different here and it suits Mirzya.

A tale of love, Mirzya, which hits theaters Friday, explores the tragic folktale of Mirza and Sahiban both in the world of folklore and in modern Rajasthan in 2016. The story, presented in a very unique way, weaves in and out of the love of Mirza-Sahiban of the folk tale and the characters of today. This ageless epic is directed by the BAFTA Awards nominee & 3-time National Award recipient Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and is brought to life in the words of famed poet and lyricist Dadasaheb Phalke recipient and Oscar winner – Gulzar. Introducing Harshvardhan Kapoor and Saiyami Kher, along with Anuj Chaudhary and Anjali Patil, this untold love story of estranged soul mates also stars Om Puri, Art Malik, and K. K. Raina.

From the heartbreaking but brilliant Rang De Basanti, to the wonderful Delhi 6, to the inspiring Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra has brought Indian cinema some of its greatest films.
With his film Mirzya, he has now turned his focus on the Punjabi folk tale Mirza-Sahiban, but presenting it in a unique way. Interweaving the legendary folklore with a contemporary version, this musical brings out the story of a love that will never die. Joining him in transforming this story is the esteemed writer and poet Gulzar. Adding to the worlds of Mirzya is music by the great Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy.
Mirzya introduces Harshvardhan Kapoor and Saiyami Kher, along with Anuj Chaudhary. Also bringing the story to life are the screen masters, Om Puri, Art Malik, and K. K. Raina.
Some of my absolute favorite interviews to conduct are with directors because they just love talking about their movies.

In this tribute to the love between soul mates, this passionate love song of the decade from Mirzya will transform you to a beautiful world of unbridled passion and ecstasy very aesthetically. It creates a lasting imagery of two people completely in love oblivious to the turmoil around their relationship.
A pleasant blend of folk tunes and electronic music, Chakora briefly documents Harshvardhan Kapoor and Saiyami Kher‘s tale of love and passion. Mirzya is based on the folk legend of Mirza-Sahiban and Chakora rightfully adds drama to the flavour of the historic saga.
Composed by Shankar, Ehsaan, Loy, the song is written by renowned lyricist Gulzar. Singers Mame Khan, Shuchismita Das and Akhtar Chinnal have sung the unconventionally catchy track.

The music launch which was held in Mumbai saw the Kapoor family in attendance with the father-daughter, Anil and Rhea cheering for the youngest member of their family, Harsh's debut. Stating that his life has come a full circle, Anil said, "My father came a few decades back to this film industry and he saw success and a few disappointments but that gave him strength. I want to thank my father, my mother and both my brothers. "Further adding that he doesn't want to make it an event about him, the...

Bollywood had an interesting year of music, whether it was A.R.Rahman delivering a cohesive soundtrack in Tamasha or Amit Trivedi conjuring up the jazz and swing sounds of Bombay’s jazz age in Bombay Velvet. There was also less pressure on one music director to deliver when multiple artists contributed to the film’s hits like Roy’s ‘Chittiyaan Kalaiyaan’ by Meet Bros, and ‘Sooraj Dooba Hai’ by Amaal Mallik. 2015 was definitely a year for experimentation for music directors, which we completely appreciated including the retro albums like Prem Ratan Dhan Payo with the title track capturing the nation on Dubsmash. Read on for our picks of the year, and let us know what your faves were.
1. Bombay Velvet – Irrespective of what you thought of Anurag Kashyap’s magnum opus of Bombay’s murky past filled with gangsters, business tycoons, torch singers, and hitmen, you can’t dispute...

Singer-songwriter and now an actor of surprising skills (he has just received unanimous praise for his performance in the Marathi period drama Katyar Kaljat Ghusali) Shankar Mahadevan suffered a health setback last week. Now on the way to recovery after a heart attack, Shankar says he is feeling better than ever before. "It was somewhat scary. But I am pretty rocking now. It's all thanks to all the love and good wishes that I received while I was unwell," says the maverick composer currently working on the large music score of director Shujaat Saudagar's Rock On 2. The work has been postponed because of Shankar's indisposition. "But I'll be back soon. I am now back at home from hospital, chilling and creating music in my head. Soon those tunes will find their way out," says Shankar whose partnership with Ehsaan and Loy has yielded some of the most ear-friendly...

One more new romantic song from Katti Batti is out and it is surely the best song in the album. Ove Janiya, the new track from Kangana Ranaut and Imran Khan starrer film, puts you in a romantic and quite melancholic mood.
In the video, a stony-faced Payal (played by Kangana Ranaut) rejects a desolate Madhav Kabra (played by Imran Khan), punctuated by brief flashbacks to happier times.
Mohan Kannan’s, the Chaandaniya from 2 States and Yaariyan from Cocktail fame singer, voice is magical is heart wrenching. Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy’s composition is outstanding while Kumaar’s lyrics are poignant and beautiful.
Directed by Nikhil Advani and produced by Emmay Entertainment Production, the film releases on September 18.

With Nikhil Advani’s Katti Batti, expectations are high for Shankar, Ehsaan, and Loy to deliver another great soundtrack since the melodious gem of D-Day. It’s a big release for Imran Khan, who’s come back after his paternity leave and Kangana Ranaut, who’s following up the critical acclaim of Queen. Since it’s Advani’s second film of the month, we can be assured that Katti Batti will be a better soundtrack than the formulaic songs of Hero. The songs on this album are immediately catchy whether it’s the clubby Sarfira, or the cheeky Lip to Lip, there’s a song for everyone to enjoy.
First off, we have Sarfira, which immediately has you wanting to groove the night away. The production mixes the typical electronic style with dub-step beats, but it’s the chorus that is instantly addictive. Siddharth Mahadevan is fast becoming one of my favourite playback singers,...

For the music of the films of 2014, the composers brought in classic voices, new vocal sounds and vibes and even an actress or two to bring their songs to life. Usually we limit our list to the 5 Best Female Singers but this year we had to expand to 10 in order to highlight their fabulous performances.
10. Shraddha Kapoor
For the first time an actress makes it to our Best Female Singers countdown. Shraddha not only shined in two completely different roles in Ek Villain and Haider, the young actress also showed off her lovely voice with two completely different tunes. With ‘Galliyan’ from Ek Villain, she impressed with her melodious tones. In ‘Do Jahaan’ from Haider she sang a Kashmiri folk song, about which director and composer Vishal Bhardwaj said, “After listening to the song they (Kashmiris) would want to keep you with themselves.” Perhaps one day in the future she...

Kill Dil is Yash Raj Films’ latest offering starring Ranveer Singh (Ram-Leela), Ali Zafar (Tere Bin Laden), Parineeti Chopra (Hasee Toh Phasee) and Govinda (Raavn) in pivotal roles. The films bring together the winning combination of Shaad Ali, Shankar-Eshaan-Loy and Gulzar (Bunty Aur Babli and Jhoom Barabaar Jhoom). It features the vocal talents of Sunidhi Chauhan (‘Sheila Ki Jawani’ – Tees Maar Khan), Siddhartha Mahadevan (‘Malang’ – Dhoom 3), Sukwinder Singh (‘Bismil’ – Haider), Sonu Nigam (‘Abhi Mujhme Kahin’ – Agneepath) and Arjit Singh (‘Tum Hi Ho’ – Aashiqui 2) amongst others.
The title track opens with Gulzar introducing the film’s male protagonists with some well-written couplets. The track is a clever blend of Spaghetti Western and rock with some pretty decent yodeling from Shankar Mahadevan and Sonu Nigam. Nigam and Mahadevan demonstrate great camaraderie and the enthusiastic rendition makes the track worth your while.

Apparently Ranveer Singh got popular singer Sukhwinder Singh to make a guest appearance in the video for a song for Kill Dil.

2013 has been a stellar year for soundtracks, with constant innovation and the odd chartbuster that eventually tops your most played list on your iPod. There was a lot of fabulous collaborations like Vishal Bharadwaj and South-African band Umoja for Matru Ki Bijli Ka Mandola or the full on Southie beats for Chennai Express. There was a lot of regional flavour and experimentation with music directors like A.R. Rahman and Amit Trivedi looking to the sounds of Banaras and Gujarat for their fantastic albums. Whoever says there’s a dearth of good soundtracks, then look no further than our list of top albums of the year!
10. Kai Po Che
Amit Trivedi appears twice on our list, because he proved that quality trumps quality with his three-song album that perfectly conjured up that Gujurati flavour with his consistently inventive stamp. Who could have thought that bagpipes would go seamlessly well with shehnaii...

The year in song in 2013 certainly was a treat for Hindi music fans. With songs ranging to straight-up classical influences, to songs with a Southern tinge plus the new grooves that hit high notes of hard rock, dub step, hip-hop, and punk-rock there was something for everyone. 2013 had some wonderful musical moments and they were not all on the big screen. This year we thought we would change it up a bit and not only highlight the best songs of the movies, we also wanted to shine the light on some of the brilliant performances that took place on MTV’s Coke Studio and MTV Unplugged. So take a dekho at our list of the 50 best songs of 2013.
50. Aiyo Ji – Satyagraha – Salim Merchant & Shraddah Pandit- Salim-Sulaiman
49. Dum Mast Kalander – David – Rekha Bharadwaj – Mikey Mccleary
48. Zariya – Ar Rahman – Ani Choying Drolma, Farah Siraj- Coke Studio @ MTV Season 3

Yavarum Nalam (13B: Fear Has a New Address)
Written by Vikram K. Kumar
Directed by Vikram K. Kumar
India, 2009
Even the slightest of Bollywood touches to a film out of India makes said film harder to swallow for most Western based cinephiles. Not in a negative way mind you, but it’s a safe bet that a musical number popping up in the middle of a horror movie is not something Western horror fans experience all that often. Especially not in a straight horror film, because that’s what Yavarum Nalam is, a straight horror movie. Sure, there are a few funny sequences, but at its heart this Indian film is a horror movie before all else. The inclusion of some minor Bollywood touches gives the film a unique flare amongst horror films, and that’s almost never a bad thing.
There’s a fair amount of oppression in Yavarum Nalam.

One of our favorite and well, my favorite Ost’s if you read my 4 star review, so far this year, has been Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy’s aka Sel’s music for Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s tale of the inspiring winning life of Milkha Singh starring Farhan Akhtar. With an eclectic and very cool mix of sounds, flavors, genres, notes and voices they have created a fabulous set of songs for the film. Fans loved the tracks just hearing them when the Ost first released and could not wait to see how they played out on screen. As happens, many times, you can love a song just hearing it but once you see it in the film, you love it even more and that is true of Bmb. In her 4.5 star movie review for us, Aashi Gahlot said, “Every song belongs to the moment it represents perfectly.
