Exclusive: Stuart Hazeldine, who helmed Lionsgate’s $97M faith-based hit The Shack, will next direct the wartime thriller Irena Sendler, about the Polish social worker who organized a team of young women to smuggle 2,500 Jewish children out of the Warsaw Ghetto in defiance of the Nazi extermination program.
Pic will be produced by Armory Films which has been relishing some great success at the specialty box office recently with its SXSW and Deauville Audience winner The Peanut Butter Falcon (current B.O. $15M).
Irena Sendler is being written by Agatha Dominik, Brian Pittman & Rachel Long and Hazeldine. The film will be produced by Jeff Most, Jeff Rice, Armory Films’ Christopher Lemole and Tim Zajaros, and BAFTA and Oscar-winning producer Ewa Puszczyńska of Extreme Emotions. Most along with Jeff Rice obtained Sendler’s authorized biography and life rights, including access to unpublished details about her life, as well as securing her blessing to tell her story prior to her passing in 2008. Ingenious Media arranged the funding for the development of the script.
Armory Films’ Christopher Lemole and Tim Zajaros tell Deadline, “What Irena and her courageous group of women were able to accomplish is miraculous. It’s remarkable that so few people know about her incredible story. We couldn’t be more excited to have Stuart on board to direct this incredible script and tell the world the story of the inspirational hero Irena Sendler.”
Most added, “Knowing her as I did, I’m certain that if Irena Sendler was alive today she would be thrilled that her story is in the capable hands of Stuart Hazeldine, who has crafted a compelling vision to bring one of the most daring, exciting and moving tales of WW2 to the big screen.”
Hazeldine’s feature directorial debut Exam starring Luke Mably and Chukwudi Iwuji and Gemma Chan was nominated for a BAFTA in the British filmmaker debut category. Hazeldine is repped by Wme, Brillstein Entertainment and Stone Genow Smelkinson Binder & Christopher.

When Rachel Long was pregnant with her second child in 2016, a maternal fetal medicine physician recommended she be tested for the Brca mutation. She was 26 years old at the time, and with a strong family history of breast cancer — her aunt had died from the disease just a year before, and both of her grandmothers received diagnoses — she was a likely candidate to have inherited the mutation, which greatly increases a woman’s chance of developing breast cancer, according to the National Cancer Institute.
The young mom tested positive for the mutation and was given some preventative advice, but not any other diagnosis.

In a laughable scene in Dawn Patrol, John (Scott Eastwood) passes a joint to his brother (Chris Brochu) while riding a skateboard, and director Daniel Petrie Jr. stages the moment in drawn-out slow motion, as if he expected it to appear as a SportsCenter highlight. This kind of tacky, on-the-nose treatment is representative of Petrie’s choices throughout the movie — though, in his defense, the screenplay he’s working from (co-written by Rachel Long and Brian Pittman) is a mess in its own right.
Following a clumsy opening in which John, clad in Marine clothing, recounts his story to a woman (Julie Carmen) as she holds him at gunpoint, the movie flashes back to the summer of 2008. Petrie takes his time detailing the habits of John’s bea...

It has been in development since at least February, but the sequel to the 2011 Jason Statham-led action thriller remake The Mechanic has now pencilled in a name – Mechanic: Resurrection – and a couple of co-stars to aid (or possibly hinder) The Stath in his hit man endeavours, with Tommy Lee Jones and Jessica Alba signing up.German director Dennis Gansel has long since been attached to take the megaphone over from Simon West, and he’ll pump cinematic life into a script by Philip Shelby, Tony Mosher, Rachel Long and Brian Pittman. As the sequel kicks off, Statham’s Arthur Bishop has tried to quit the business, clearly forgetting the first rule of movie hit men: you can never leave and trouble will follow you if you do. In this case, the arrival of someone from his past forces him back into the business, and Bishop has to complete an...

We didn’t know it when docu-helmer Errol Morris (The Thin Blue Line, The Unknown Known) signed up for it last July, but by the looks of several industry players, he might have landed on the best screenplay of the bunch.
The annual “The Black List” unveiled its “favorite unproduced screenplays” of the year, and ranking at the top with a slim margin of a lead was Andrew Sodroski’s Holland, Michigan – a project that should begin lensing in April of next year with Naomi Watts possibly toplining. The second place top vote-getter got a lot more than a set of steak knifes this year. The out-of-nowhere, complete obscurity to huge pay day Section 6 by first time scribe Aaron Berg garnered huge interest towards the end of the year and should be jettisoned into production by the Universal folks – look for big name talent to be attached sometime in...

With all the mindless sequels and reboots that Hollywood has churned out over the last few years, it’s always nice when something original and well-written can break through and get a studio release. Unfortunately, many quality scripts can spend years without ever reaching the right executive to give it the green light. In an effort to make the process a little bit better, former production executive Franklin Leonard started The Black List in 2004. Today, the site announced its ninth annual list of the best unproduced scripts.
To come up with the list, nominations are received from over 250 executives. If a film gets 6 nominations, it gets a spot on the list. The more executives that nominate it, the higher on the list it is. Production for last year’s top film, Draft Day, is underway with the theatrical release scheduled for April, so there’s a pretty good chance that...

Millennium Films has secured the rights to an original action thriller, The Civilian , Deadline reports. A spec script, the project arrives from the screenwriting pair of Rachel Long and Brian Pittman and is likened to The Bourne Identity both in tone and in its aspirations to spawn a franchise. The Civilian follows an American doctor who has his identity stolen by a top-level spy. To save himself, the man is forced to, in turns, take the identity of the spy and, with it, the man's dangerous assignment. Mark Gill will produce with Christine Crow, Boaz Davidson, Avi Lerner and Trevor Short executive producing. The Civilian is being fast-tracked into production. While there's currently no one attached to direct or star, expect that to change in the very near future.

Rob Cohen will direct the most expensive movie ever made in Korea, a war epic called 1950. That may not even be the strangest part. The film is based on the true story of Marguerite Higgins, then the New York Herald Tribune's Far East bureau chief, who covered the Korean war from the front lines. A good story, no doubt, but when you make a mental list of directors who seem like a good fit for that particular tale, does the guy who directed Stealth, xXx and The Fast and the Furious jump to the top? No, not for me, either. More info follows. A press release announces that Rachel Long and Brian Pittman wrote the script, and summarizes the subject as such: Marguerite Higgins, the Tribune’s then Far East bureau chief, who had covered the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps at the end of WWII, initially found herself...

I truly admire Rob Cohen. Despite lacking any discernible talent or sense of style that isn’t taken from an early 2000′s music video, he’s managed to get movies made, and they manage to make money. A press release from Cj E&M Pictures and Grapevine Entertainment brings the wonderful news of a Korean War epic that he’s screwing up helming, titled 1950.
What’s really sad, above all else, is that this is based off the work of New York Herald Tribune reporter Marguerite Higgins, who won a Pulitzer Prize for her work, which also makes her the first woman to win the coveted prize. So, the film based on her great efforts is directed by the guy who made The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Go figure.
