Janice Long, the first woman to have her own daily show on the BBC’s Radio 1, died at home on Christmas Day. She was 66 and had what was described as a “short illness,” according to reports.
Long has hosted BBC Radio Wales‘ evening show since 2017. Her five-decade career was instrumental in championing the early careers of some of pop music’s biggest stars, including Amy Weinhouse, whom Long granted her first radio session. Long was also the first regular female host of the TV show Top of the Pops, and was one of the main presenters of the Live Aid charity concert in 1985.
BBC director general Tim Davie described her as a “stellar presenter” who was loved across the industry.
Long’s career included hosting shows across BBC stations, as well as the breakfast show on Greater London Radio and Xfm.

My friend Peter Richardson, who has died of cancer aged 51, was a graphic artist with a special talent for typography. Peter's designs were always elegant and considered, with a sensitive use of colour. His collage-based illustrations combined simple drawings, text and photographic elements. These varied design skills lent themselves well to animation, in particular the creation of TV titles and motion graphics, where Peter made his career.
He was born in Guiseley, West Yorkshire. After secondary school he started a degree in engineering at Manchester University, but then decided to transfer to an art foundation course at Bradford College, where he was encouraged by the tutors Grant Devine and Ian Taylor.
He went on to study illustration at Liverpool Polytechnic, where he developed his interest in drawing, collage, making handmade books, lino-cut printing and typography. While at Liverpool he played guitar for the Passmore Sisters, who released a number of...

"Am I moving too fast for you?" Morrissey sings on one of his new songs, "Action Is My Middle Name." For fans, the ex-Smiths frontman may not be moving fast enough. The legendary singer/songwriter played three new tracks on BBC Radio 2's Janice Long's show last night, and of course the Internet pulls through on posting these suckers. There's "Action," a rocker "The Kid's a Looker" and a more boppy "People Are the Same Everywhere." Keys abound, heavy guitar artillery line the verses. These tracks are apparently from Moz' forthcoming, as-yet-untitled album, the follow-up to 2009's "Years of Refusal." According to...

It looks like sci-fi comedy series Red Dwarf may be making its way back to British television screens, confirming the rumours from back in October. The show, which stars Craig Charles, Chris Barrie, Robert Llewellyn and Danny John-Jules was first broadcast back in 1988 and ran for 8 seasons on BBC 2 before facing the chop.
The show was revived as a 3-part mini series last Easter on satellite and cable channel Dave, and it’s Dave who are bringing back the show once more for a further 6 episodes. According to Llewellyn, writing on his Twitter account:
Quick Red Dwarf update. I know 99% of nothing, but it does seem very possible we will make a new series (6 episodes) in 2011. It will be with original cast, hopefully recorded in front of audience but don’t know any of that yet. The new series is indeed for Dave. Won’t be on until later next year.

London, May 5 – Singer Morrissey expressed his deep sympathies in a tribute that he penned for a long time fan who passed away last month.
After being told by DJ Janice Long of her death, the former The Smiths frontman paid homage to Melinda Hsu – who travelled thousands of miles to follow the singer’s tours – to thank her for giving him “strength” during his live shows.
In a statement, Morrissey writes: “I did not know Melinda personally, but I felt as if I did because she had been a front row fixture for many years… Mel was a smiling face.

Morrissey has revealed that he is planning to write an autobiography to protect his "legacy". The former Smiths frontman said that he wanted the book to correct "silly" stories written about him by the media. Speaking on Janice Long's Radio 2 show, the singer said: "So much crap is written about you, me, and it's quite hard to live with sometimes because it all gets burned down in history and becomes a part of your, whatever it is you are, the legacy."
