Back in 2013, Amazon decided to let viewers decide which series it produced. The streamer put all of its contending pilots online and based the decision of which series to pick on viewer feedback from the pilots. The policy has led to quite a few unpopular and critically lambasted series getting full-season orders. That's going to change as the streamer ditches the feedback model and cancels several of its current series, including Sea Oak and Love You More.

Amazon Studios continues to inch toward scrapping its viewer feedback model.
On Monday, the streaming outlet and retail giant passed on three of its five comedy pilots, with Sea Oak, The Climb and Love You More no longer moving forward. The fate of its two remaining pilots — Greg Daniels' single-camera Upload and multicam Making Friends, from How I Met Your Mother...

The aftershocks of white nationalist rallies and their violence are still felt in Charlottesville, which hosted the 30th annual Virginia Film Festival this weekend. At the entrance of the fest’s marquee venue, the Paramount Theater (located on the idyllic main street that became a conflict zone August 12), the state pressured festival organizers to install metal detectors. Even as the festival decided to focus on the theme of “Race in Film,” out-of-town white supremacists started making their presence felt in Charlottesville as court appearances stemming from “A12” (the locals’ term for the horrific events this summer) began.
Against this backdrop, Spike Lee came to Charlottesville this weekend and screened his 1997 documentary “4 Little Girls,” about the 1963 murder of four young African-American girls in the bombing of the Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama.
“I think terrorism is terrorism whether it’s Isis, the Klan, it’s all terrorism,” said Lee introducing the...

When Amazon cancelled Good Girls Revolt earlier this year, the move came as quite surprise because of its swiftness. Sources reported that Amazon Studios chief Roy Price hated the show about sexism in the field of journalism, and after Price was fired from Amazon amid allegations that he had sexually harassed women he worked with, there seemed to be an explanation for why he hated the show so much. Now the series' production company is reportedly looking for a new home for a show that is suddenly on the cutting edge of the sexual harassment scandal that is gripping Hollywood.

On paper it’s a western with everything — a major star, decent supporting players, a cult director and sideways references to the blacklisting years. But even with its ya-gotta-see-it-to-believe-it high noon showdown scene, Joseph H. Lewis’s last feature film is still a lower-tier United Artists effort. Sterling Hayden goes up against Sebastian Cabot and Nedrick Young, armed with a, with a . . . aw, you probably know already.

Amazon has handed out a two-season order to one of its pilots.
The retail giant/streaming service has handed out a two-season order for Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino's The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
The hourlong pilot, one of five currently online for "viewer feedback," stars House of Cards alum Rachel Brosnahan as Miriam "Midge" Maisel, a 1958 New York City housewife who, through a series of events, winds up exploring the world of stand-up comedy.
"In her onstage debut, Mrs. Maisel killed and had audiences responding overwhelmingly with digital applause,” Amazon head of comedy and drama Joe Lewis said. “Like any great young stand-up, we’re excited to see what she has to say next and for a long time to come. That made it an...

Golden Globe winner Colin Farrell will re-team with director Yorgos Lanthimos for a third time on an as-yet untitled dramatic television series for Amazon. Having delivered the critically acclaimed 2015 comedy drama The Lobster, and while filming the upcoming drama film The Killing Of A Sacred Deer, Farrell and Lanthimos have confirmed that they will join forces once more for a re-telling of the Iran-Contra scandal – with Farrell starring as Oliver North.
The Iran-Contra scandal rocked the presidency of Ronald Reagan, as it transpired that senior administration officials had violated an arms embargo in order to interfere in the affairs of another country. Seven U.S hostages were being held by Hezbollah in Lebanon, and a deal was made for the secret sale of arms to Iran, to facilitate their release. Oliver North became a household name during the investigation into these events, as he was responsible for augmenting the plan...

Amazon’s The Man in the High Castle went from speculative to eerily persistent between seasons 1 and 2, and the streaming site seems to feel the same way. The Philip K. Dick adaptation, which sees the world as if the Nazis won World War II, has been renewed for a third season, just after its second aired in late November. But that’s not the only development. We’ve also learned that Eric Overmeyer, a veteran TV writer/producer behind Law & Order, The Wire, Treme and Amazon’s brother series Bosch, will be stepping up as showrunner for the 2017 season.
Joe Lewis, Amazon’s head of comedy and drama, said the following during his announcement:
As timely as ever, the exploration of characters at a dark point for humanity has provided incredible stories for two seasons. Eric and his team are doing an incredible job crafting stories about the inner lives...

“Transparent” has scored an early Season 4 renewal, months ahead of the third season’s Amazon Prime Video debut. The fourth season will premiere in 2017, when the cast will welcome back the Pfefferman clan: Jeffrey Tambor as Maura, Judith Light as Shelly, Gaby Hoffmann as Ali, Amy Landecker as Sarah and Jay Duplass as Josh. Series creator Jill Soloway will continue in her role as showrunner, with Andrea Sperling coming back as executive producer. “As the quality of television rises to new heights, ‘Transparent’ continues to stand out for its depth of character, compassionate storytelling and its infinite creative risk-taking,” said Joe Lewis,...

As we’ve already learned, The Tick is going to make a big comeback as a live action series for Amazon. The big blue hero will be played by Peter Serafinowicz, and he will be joined by Griffin Newman (Vinyl) who will play Arthur Everest and Valorie Curry (House of Lies, The Following) who will play his sister, Dot Everest.
I’ve really been looking forward to seeing how they tackle this new series, and thanks to creator Ben Edlund, we now know what the tone of the series will be. While talking to EW about it, he explains that it will be darker and more grounded:
“We’ve got this show about superheroes [where] we get to have fun with the idea of superheroes by starting with kind of a comedic parody of [an] event-oriented-like universe. It will be darker and more grounded. And it’s going to have a real story,...

On the heels of its recent success at the Golden Globes, where it nabbed the gongs for Best Comedy and Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy, Amazon has officially renewed Mozart in the Jungle for season 3.
The online giant announced the news via Twitter earlier today:

First hitting the streaming service in December of 2014, Mozart in the Jungle and, in particular, Gael García Bernal have quickly made an impression. Outside of the excellent Transparent, the musical comedy has fast become one of the more intriguing (and now award-winning) series among Amazon’s roster of content.
Adapted from Blair Tindall’s memoir Mozart in the Jungle: Sex, Drugs & Classical Music, Amazon’s title thrusts viewers into a largely unfamiliar world with aplomb, helped by the performances of Bernal,...

Death looms large in this harrowing documentary about the Afghan army’s battle with the Taliban
This striking and harrowing documentary follows members of the Afghan national army as they battle with the Taliban in Helmand after Nato’s departure in 2014. It’s sobering fare, blending chaotic line-of-fire footage (a hellish standoff in Sangin) with up-close-and-personal accounts of the more mundane aspects of army life. Ruminations upon the fate of young men forced to the frontline by harsh economics serve as a stark reminder of the ongoing price of this conflict, with irregular pay, substandard supplies and the spectre of death an everyday reality. Joe Lewis’s score lends subtly powerful accompaniment, while a roll call of soldiers killed during the making of this film provides a mournful epitaph.

Jeffrey Tambor has been to the comedy mountaintop twice with "The Larry Sanders Show" and "Arrested Development," and has had a long and productive career that's seen him working pretty much non-stop since 1979. So he knows from professional fulfillment. But he's never had a role as challenging, or as potentially rewarding, as his current job on "Transparent," the new Amazon dramedy that will premiere on Friday morning. (Amazon will make all 10 episodes of the first season available at once.) As Maura Pfefferman, a transgender woman known to her family and the world at large as Mort, Tambor has to play another gender — even in scenes set in the past where we get glimpses of Maura peeking out from under Mort's clothes — and do the kind of small, precise dramatic work that he's rarely been called upon to do in his career, let alone as the lead of a show. It's...

In the midst of the worst drought in California history, rain continued to pummel La on Saturday. And while the eight inches of much-needed showers doesn't even begin to meet the region's needs, fears are mounting that it just might succeed at ruining the most anticipated red carpet celebration of the year: the Oscars. On Friday, workers rushed to remove what looked like a small pond forming on the very steps that stars like Cate Blanchett and Brad Pitt are expected to grace at the Dolby Theatre. With the state on high alert, Oscars organizers are paying close attention to the weather forecast. "We're prepared to welcome our guests regardless of the weather," a spokesperson said. Mud flow and mandatory evacuations have hit nearby areas like Azusa, Glendora, and Monrovia. As of Saturday, meteorologists predicted a 40 percent chance of rain and a high of 63 degrees in La on Sunday. That's...

According to the Daily Telegraph, Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy and owner Joe Lewis are not prepared to continue any discussions with Real Madrid regarding Gareth Bale until the Spanish side increase their offer.
The La Liga side have already offered £80 million for the Welshman and whilst talks have been ongoing, Spurs are now demanding a bigger transfer fee before the discussions go any further.
The London based club are said to be angered and upset by the way Real Madrid have gone about the deal and are now standing firm regarding the pursuit of the winger. Madrid and other players surrounding the club have openly praised the 24-year-old, causing disruption within the Spurs camp.
It is unclear whether a deal which actually be done now especially with Spurs manager, Andre Villas-Boas, claiming that Real Madrid manager, Carlo Ancelotti, was “wrong” to speak about Bale so publicly.

Tottenham’s attacking midfielder Gareth Bale’s future will be decided one way or the other within the next 48 hours, according to the Daily Mail.
Bale has been involved in one of this summer’s more protracted transfer sagas but could have his future sorted this week, if reports are accurate.
Spurs’ owner Joe Lewis is taking charge of talks over the potential sale of the player to Real Madrid – and he will not settle for anything less than £100 million for the Wales international.
The Bahamas-based billionaire is taking up a more active involvement in the Bale situation and is set to meet Real’s president Florentino Perez in Miami or Phoenix, along with the Lilywhite’s chairman Daniel Levy.
An insider is quoted as saying:
