Disney+’s new six-part series “Light & Magic” takes audiences inside the magic and history of Industrial Light & Magic, starting with George Lucas’ vision for “Star Wars” and covering how their innovative StageCraft suite of virtual production changed the game in filmmaking.
Speaking with Variety, Janet Lewin, Senior VP of Lucasfilm Visual Effects and General Manager of Ilm, fondly recalls the first time she saw “Star Wars.” “I was 7 years old and was completely blown away. I literally thought there were galaxies like that, far, far away,” she remembers.
Years later, Lewin worked as visual effects producer on “Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith,” and oversaw all aspects of the visual effects and animation business for Lucasfilm and Ilm.
In documenting the rise of Ilm, the series follows the pioneers and VFX trailblazers behind the magic such as Phil Tippett and Dennis Muren.

Disney+ recently released "Light & Magic," a six-part documentary series chronicling the rise of Industrial Light & Magic, the visual effects house created by George Lucas and the company that took us to a galaxy far, far away, welcomed us to "Jurassic Park," and took "E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial" to the skies.

Star Wars Celebration is a place where the makers of the magic are given their proper due, and the effects wizards behind "The Mandalorian" and "Book of Boba Fett" are no exception. On Saturday at the show, following up the Mando+ extravaganza, the stage was turned over to the crew behind the scenes.
Vanity Fair writer Anthony Breznican hosted the panel and brought out Janet Lewin (the manager of Industrial Light & Magic), Richard Bluff (VFX supervisor on "The Mandalorian"), Bonnie Wild and Matthew Wood (from Skywalker Sound), John Rosengrant (from Legacy Effects), and one of the puppeteers for Baby Yoda aka...

During the final episode of Variety‘s Sustainability in Hollywood event presented by Toyota Mirai, Rob Bredow, senior vice president and chief creative officer at Industrial Light & Magic, and Janet Lewin, senior vice president and general manager at Ilm and co-producer of “The Mandalorian,” talked to artisans editor Jazz Tangcay about how the virtual production of “The Mandalorian” has allowed the show to reduce its carbon footprint.
When Bredow and Lewin were first approached to sign on to “The Mandalorian,” producer Jon Favreau had just wrapped two virtual production-based films, including “The Lion King.” And with his upcoming project, Favreau and the team hoped to use virtual reality tools to create an authentic story from the “Star Wars” universe.
Lewin said the key to creating a live-action film through virtual production is “moving post-production to pre-production,” which means creating and editing the backdrops prior to the shooting.

“I think Season 1 really only scratched the surface of what was possible. We keep talking with Jon [Favreau] and [production designer] Andrew Jones about what could be possible with this technology, and it’s very exciting. We certainly have not reached our limits, even after shooting Season 2.” — Richard Bluff
To craft an epic space Western on a TV budget, The Mandalorian eschewed location shoots and instead crafted a digital exterior volume on a soundstage.
The volume, made up of 2,200 Led screens in a 20x70ft circle, projected environments crafted from plates and digital assets, on Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 4.
The video game engine, married with high resolution environment scans, had advanced far enough to project photorealistic worlds in real-time.
The nascent StageCraft technology relies on age-old principles of rear projection and camera perspective, given a cutting-edge, modern twist.

Industrial Light + Magic president Chrissie England is preparing to pass the reins to executive in charge of production Lynwen Brennan.
The transition will occur over a six-month period and in February, Brennan will become president and Gm of Ilm. England, a 30-year veteran of the company, will take on an advisory role in client relationships, marketing, and general business and production strategies.
The succession plan has been two years in the works. Said England in a released statement: "At this juncture in my career I need to rebalance my priorities so that I can devote more attention to my family. As succession plans go, this is really an ideal scenario."
Brennan joined Ilm as a technical area lead for the computer graphics department in 1999. She was promoted to her current role in July 2006. Earlier, she was an original member of Parallax Software and held marketing positions at Avid and Alias/Wavefront.
