In the years since this column’s debut, ’90s horror movies have actually found a sizable and heartwarming amount of rediscovery and reappreciation. Physical media has resurrected and restored numerous films to the point where even derided efforts like my beloved I Still Know What You Did Last Summer can get a celebratory 4K upgrade. With this new outlook, horror culture is starting to better redefine the historical landscape of the decade. The conversation is no longer enveloped by the shadow of Ghostface.
But, Misery offers a unique issue when it comes to embracing a movie. An issue made more complex and wonderful by Misery being one of the greatest popular stories to occur in our lifetimes.
A bold claim? Of course, but the evidence is on my side. The novel by Stephen King is often cited among his top standalone achievements in fiction. I had never read the novel...

It’s hard to know much exaggeration is used in movies about crazy Suth’un politics, when some of the serious movies resemble Julius Caesar with mint juleps. This true story is about an old-school populist Louisiana governor who falls for a nationally-known stripper, the famous Blaze Starr, and is told from the stripper’s Pov. Paul Newman is at his late-career best, and Lolita Davidovich lights up the screen. The governor can get away with most anything except what he wants to do most — pass some color-blind laws about hiring and voting.

Those groovy exploitation dealers at Grindhouse Releasing are finally releasing Duke Mitchell’s Gone With The Pope. I have been waiting to see this film for some time and missed the only theatrical showing in St. Louis because it was shown at a different theater on the same nights I did a Late Nite Grindhouse show 5 years ago. This is awesome news for fans coupled with the release of Duke Mitchell’s later film, Massacre Mafia Style, hitting Blu-Ray later this month.
Trailer From Grindhouse Releasing’s website:
Lost for over 30 years, Gone With The Pope stars famed nightclub performer Duke Mitchell as Paul, a paroled gangster with an unholy scheme: to kidnap the Pope and charge “a dollar from every Catholic in the world” as the ransom.
Shot in 1975, Gone With The Pope was unfinished at the time of Duke Mitchell’s death in 1981. Sage Stallone and Bob Murawski...

Read Jim Batts review Here.
Lauded by critics when it hit theaters in May 2014, Scott Bowles of USA Today called Chef, “One of the most heartwarming of the year. You need not be a foodie to appreciate the film’s reverence for a good meal. More surprising than the great culinary scenes are the moments between father and son.

Four talented magicians mesmerize an international audience with a series of bold and original heists, all the while pursuing a hidden agenda that has the FBI and Interpol scrambling to anticipate their next move in Now You See Me, a visually spectacular blend of astonishing illusions and exhilarating action from director Louis Leterrier (Clash of the Titans).
The Four Horsemen, a magic super‐group led by the charismatic J.Daniel Atlas (Jesse Eisenberg), perform a pair of hightech, high‐profile magic shows, first amazing audiences by remotely robbing a Paris bank while in Las Vegas, and then exposing a white‐collar criminal and funneling his millions into the audience members’ bank accounts, baffling the authorities with their intricately planned capers.
FBI Special Agent Dylan Rhodes (Mark Ruffalo) is determined to make the magicians pay for their crimes—and to stop them before they pull off what promises to be an even more audacious heist.

Bts’ classic rock concert/stunt/explosion hybrid comes to TCM! Screens in the homeland, too!
We all know the legend of Stunt Rock by now, I hope: how Brian Trenchard-Smith conceived of a wacky hybrid of stunts and rock concert, the limitations of the shoot, the cult classic love letter to actual, human-performed stunts that was born and how, 30+ years later, that cult legend lives on in midnight screenings and smoke-filled basements. Grant Page, the film’s stuntman star, is a complete madman in the film, and if you don’t walk away from a viewing of it all warm and gushy and longing for modern action spectacles to bring back more honest-to-a-god stunt work*, I think you and I can safely assume we’ll never be friends.
Stunt Rock is just a simple, awesome pleasure and if you’ve never seen it, now is finally your chance. The film...
