As I begin writing this I'm watching David Letterman, in one of his final appearances as host of "The Late Show," walk out to greet the audience as he's done thousands of times. He's talking about the weather in New York, again, as he's done countless times. After Wednesday, he'll never walk out onto that Ed Sullivan Theater stage and shoot the breeze about the weather again. He'll never again throw it to Paul Shaffer and the CBS Orchestra to kick off the show. The misfits, alas, will have lost their shepherd. Because at his core, that's who Letterman is and has been. He has represented the off-brand sensibilities of an audience allergic to the vanilla stylings of his cool kid contemporaries. He has been the kind of personality who could give us Stupid Pet Tricks and turn throwing a football at a meatball-topped Christmas tree into an annual tradition.

Future Islands blew David Letterman's mind last year with an intense performance of their breakout single "Seasons (Waiting On You)," and frontman Samuel Herring's dramatic dance moves became a running meme on The Late Show thereafter. On Tuesday, the synth-pop band returned to the Ed Sullivan Theatre and debuted their hypnotic new single, "The Chase," once again impressing the late-night legend with their idiosyncratic style.
"The Chase" builds on the melodic focus of 2014's acclaimed Singles, with Herring growling passionately over hi-hat-heavy drums, a jittery bassline and glittery synth pattern.

When I was putting together my best jazz albums of 2012 article, Ivo Perelman's productive year had him dominating the list, so I made him artist of the year and then compiled a separate top ten of new recordings and a top five of older recordings mostly given their first releases this year. There were still plenty of excellent jazz albums to choose from. Jazz isn't dead, it just has to live on a fixed income.
Artist of the Year: Ivo Perelman
Brazilian tenor saxophonist Ivo Perelman's album The Hour of the Star was #18 on my Best New Jazz of 2011 list. He was just warming up for an amazing 2012 in which Leo Records released six -- Six!!! -- Perelman CDs. All of them are excellent (and none of them, alas, are on iTunes yet).

Legendary rock critic Dave Marsh once said of the Fab Faux, "All rock bands want to be like the Beatles; these guys have the nerve to Be the Beatles. Amazingly, they're so good at it you learn new things about the originals." And he's right. The band is quite literally a labor of love that was born years ago out of an elevator conversation between neighbors Jimmy Vivino (Music Director for Conan O'Brien) and Will Lee (bassist for Paul Shaffer's CBS Orchestra on the Late Show with David Letterman). The band encompasses Vivino and Lee as well as drummer/producer Rich Pagano, keyboardist/guitarist Jack Petruzzelli, and guitarist Frank Agnello. The five principals contribute vocals and scads of multi-instrumental chops, most ably augmented by the four-piece Hogshead Horns (which includes alums from the SNL band, Blues Brothers, and Blood Sweat & Tears)...
