Joaquin Phoenix might have initially wanted to do his own makeup and hair for “Joker,” but, thanks to the Oscar-nominated team of Nicki Ledermann and Kay Georgiou, it became one less thing the finicky Oscar favorite had to worry about in achieving his tour de force performance as bullied clown Arthur Fleck-turned killer Joker.
But craft and compromise went hand in hand for Ledermann and Georgiou, as they stayed on top of the messy, hand-made look that Phoenix envisioned. As they revealed at the makeup and hairstyling bake-off, they applied the work quickly (without prosthetics), but then bribed him with crackers to keep still while doing touch-ups to maintain continuity.
“The one thing that he was very adamant about was that the makeup itself was not perfect,” said makeup designer Ledermann. “It had to be very childlike, sad, not that skilled because he is not a painter. Even though he’s a professional clown,...

Putting her stamp on an iconic DC villain with Joker, makeup designer Nicki Ledermann’s task on the project was to develop a gritty, colorful and compelling look that could be applied to actor Joaquin Phoenix in no time flat.
“Joaquin is not really a person that loves to mingle and be social, and he is also not the kind of person that is very comfortable with being touched all the time. Being in makeup is hard because it’s a very intimate situation where you constantly are being touched, and he wasn’t really that comfortable with it,” Ledermann says. “But before we even started doing anything, he said, ‘I’m so sorry. I know I can be difficult, and whatever I do, please don’t ever take anything personal. It’s not you, it’s me.’”

After dominating the sixth annual Makeup and Hairstyling Guild Awards, “Bombshell” is the Oscar frontrunner for transforming an unrecognizable John Lithgow into late, disgraced Fox News CEO Roger Ailes and producer/star Charlize Theron as former anchor Megyn Kelly. Oscar winner Kazu Hiro (“Darkest Hour”) once again does amazing work.
Yet the challenges and obstacles were so great that Hiro and the team were required to push the limits of their craft. That’s because Lithgow and Theron don’t very much resemble Ailes and Kelly. And while the strategy for transforming Lithgow was not a precise recreation, Theron wanted to look as much like Kelly as possible. The best solution for Lithgow involved individual pieces for the neck, cheeks, nose, and earlobes. Hiro also shaved the hairline back for Morgan to take over with necessary coloring and alteration. Sam Mendes’ bold, continuous-shot, World War I thriller, “1917,” and Todd Phillips’ $1 billion blockbuster, “Joker,” dominated the Oscar craft nominations on Monday, grabbing seven apiece.
Meanwhile, Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” each scored five nominations, while Taika Waititi’s “Jojo Rabbit” nabbed three along with James Mangold’s “Ford v Ferrari.” Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” and Greta Gerwig’s “Little Women” each came away with two nominations, and Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story” was singled out for Randy Newman’s romantic score.
But “1917” provided the biggest tour de force crafts event of the season, with nominations for Roger Deakins’ uniquely orchestrated cinematography, Dennis Gassner’s exacting production design, Thomas Newman’s haunting score, the unusual sound editing and sound mixing, and, surprisingly, makeup and hairstyling and VFX.

There is perhaps no higher-profile job for a movie hair and makeup team than creating a new Joker. So makeup artist Nicki Ledermann and hairstylist Kay Georgiou were understandably nervous in September 2018, when director Todd Phillips released the first look at Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker on Instagram. At first glance, some fans were concerned this new Joker didn't seem like the one in the comics, but that was by design. Because it spans over 50 years, “The Irishman” required “a huge range” of looks for Robert De Niro, makeup artist Carla White reveals. White spoke extensively about her work on Martin Scorsese‘s gangland epic, for which she personally supervised De Niro’s different makeup appliances, in a new behind-the-scenes featurette. Watch the exclusive video above.
The Netflix release “takes place from 1949 to 2000,” Scorsese states, “and it goes back-and-forth in time continuously” in telling the story of Frank Sheeran (De Niro), a truck driver who becomes a hitman after becoming involved with Teamsters leader Jimmy Hoffa (Al Pacino) and mob boss Russell Bufalino (Joe Pesci). Throughout the film, we get glimpses of Sheeran in various stages of his life, from early middle age to the end of his life.

If there’s one story dominating the makeup and hairstyling category this awards season, it’s the instance where makeup wasn’t actually used.
Oh, there’s plenty of makeup in “The Irishman,” as department head Nicki Ledermann can attest — she had to craft looks that spanned multiple decades and a physical cast of more than 200 actors — but it’s the de-aging visual effects on Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci and Al Pacino that’s stealing a lot of the thunder.
Still, Ledermann says she’s not worried for her profession’s future. “De-aging is a helpful tool, but it’s hard to achieve with makeup,” she says. “It’s probably cheaper to age people with makeup than do it digitally. Besides, you want a makeup person present when the de-aging process happens on a computer, to make sure the anatomy is correct. It’s not just going in and erasing wrinkles.

On Monday the Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild jump-started the Oscar derby by announcing its nominations for the 2019 calendar year. Warner Bros’ “Joker” came away with two nominations — period/character makeup and contemporary hairstyling — for the way in which the film’s artisans physically transformed Joaquin Phoenix into the mentally deranged Arthur Fleck, aka the Joker. Could the makeup team be en route to its first Oscar nomination for Best Makeup & Hairstyling?
The guild nominated three people in the category of Best Period and/or Character Makeup: makeup designer/department head Nicki Ledermann, an Emmy winner for “Boardwalk Empire” (2011), key makeup artist Tania Ribalow, two-time Emmy nominee for “Vinyl” (2016) and “The Knick” (2016), and key makeup artist Sunday Englis, three-time Emmy contender for “Vinyl” (2016) and “The Knick” (2015 & 2016). 2020 Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards nominations: ‘Bombshell,’ ‘Rocketman,’ ‘Joker’ lead
The Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild got a jump on the Oscars by announcing its nominations on November 11. That is two months earlier than last year, when the slate was revealed midway through Oscar nominations voting. This year, the guild is out of the gate five weeks before the academy unveils the shortlist in nine categories, including Best Makeup and Hairstyling. These awards will be handed out on January 11, which is after Oscar voting but before the nominations are announced.
Two films — “Bombshell” and “Rocketman” — reaped three bids apiece with the Muahs guild. Both contend for special makeup effects. The former figures in both contemporary makeup and hair styling while the latter does likewise on the period/character side.
Six films are two-time nominees: “Dolemite Is My Name,” “Downton Abbey,” “Hustlers,” “John Wick: Parabellum,” “Joker” and “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood.”

“We’re not in the superhero world,” says Nicki Ledermann, makeup head on Todd Phillips’ “Joker,” which reimagines the iconic comic book villain’s origin in an acclaimed performance from Joaquin Phoenix. “This story is treated as real life, and that’s what made the project so interesting.”
In this most recent take on Batman’s nemesis — a role played by Jack Nicholson in 1989 and which won a posthumous Oscar for Heath Ledger for 2008’s “The Dark Knight” — it’s Gotham City, circa 1981. Arthur Fleck (Phoenix) lives a stagnant, innocuous life bringing joy to those around him by working as a clown — until a string of bad decisions sends him down a more sinister path. “Everything in Gotham is dark and gritty,” says Ledermann, whose credits include “The Greatest Showman” and Martin Scorsese’s upcoming “The Irishman.” “We wanted to connect that air to Arthur and, eventually, Joker.”

At the Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards on Feb. 24, Oscar frontrunner “Darkest Hour” won two of its three races: special makeup effects and best period/character makeup. It lost best period/character hairstyling to “I, Tonya.”
Among those films that “Darkest Hour” edged out for best special makeup effects was “Wonder,” one of its two Oscar rivals for Best Makeup & Hairstyling. That film contended on the contemporary side here and lost its bid for hairstyling to “Pitch Perfect 3″ and makeup to “Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2.” The third Oscar nominee, “Victoria and Abdul,” was snubbed by the guild.

Director/writer: Agnieszka Wojtowicz-Vosloo.
Afterlife is a film from independent director Agnieszka Wojtowicz-Vosloo ("Pate"). Afterlife is her first feature film and the title reviewed here was released on DVD and Blu-Ray August 3rd, 2010 by Anchor Bay Entertainment. The film hosts exceptional performances by the central characters, which include Liam Neeson (Taken), Justin Long (Drag Me to Hell) and Christina Ricci (Cursed). This often tense thriller takes on the ever elusive subject of: what happens after death? Just as in reality, this question is trying, but slightly redundant when bandied about for over a 100 minutes.
The film mainly focuses in on Ricci's character, Anna Taylor, who is involved in a fatal car accident. Her body is dead, yet her soul remains. To prepare her for death is a vitriolic mortician, played by Liam Neeson. His gift is speaking to the dead, which subdues the recently deceased and he prepares future clients...
