Shows like Lupin aren’t popular because of their suspenseful plot-driven stories. In addition to its abundant plot twists and turning points, the French crime drama’s compelling lead character—Assane Diop, and intriguing villains are perhaps its most emphatic selling point. The series created by George Kay and François Uzan retells the story of Maurice Leblanc’s Arsène Lupin, a charismatic gentleman thief and master of disguise. Starring Omar Sy as the leading actor, the Netflix thriller premiered in January 2021 to rave reviews, justifying the renewal for more seasons. Upon its debut, Lupin pulled viewers from over 76 million households across the...

When you’re a gentleman thief renowned for his jewel heists, how do you top yourself? By killing the legend. In the latest installment of George Kay’s Lupin, Assane Diop (Omar Sy) faked his own death to protect his family, only to be drawn back into the world of the living when his mother Mariama (Naky Sy Savane) was kidnapped by a dangerous figure from his past. For the first time forced into heists not of his own choosing, Assane has had to rely on his encyclopedic knowledge of literary gentleman thief Arsène Lupin—as well as his usual arsenal of impeccable disguises—to pay a thieves’ ransom in stolen pearls, paintings, and bracelets.

Arsene Lupin is one of the most popular fictional characters, with uncanny similarities to Sherlock Holmes. Written by Maurice Leblanc, Arsene Lupin is a gentleman thief who is widely known for his masterful disguises. However, the popular Netflix thriller series Lupin, released in 2021, is not based on the life story of this fictional character but follows an ordinary Frenchman, Assane Diop, who is inspired by Lupin’s story and his cunning techniques to carry out the thefts. Assane, with the baggage of a troubling past, has only one motive in life, which is to vindicate his father, Babakar Diop, and unmask the real culprit, bringing him to justice.
Spoilers Ahead
Part 1 Recap: Who Is Assane Diop?

Netflix said that Lupin Part 3 was “coming soon” more than a year ago, but the day has finally arrived. The third chapter in the French crime thriller starts streaming on October 5. And unless you’ve got the police file on Assane Diop (Omar Sy), you might need a recap of the story to date. We’ve got you covered. The series — like its main character — is inspired by the stories of Arsène Lupin, a gentleman thief created by French writer Maurice Leblanc in the early 1900s. Lupin Part 1 laid the groundwork of the story, introducing Assane Diop, a Senegalese man raised on the stories of Lupin. Having become a master thief and master of disguise himself, Assane now seeks revenge against the wealthy businessman Hubert Pellegrini (Hervé Pierre) for framing Assane’s late father, Babakar (Fargass Assandé), for the theft of an expensive necklace. Assane comes to learn that Hubert...

Netflix has released a clip of Lupin Part 3 which features Omar Sy’s Assane Diop back in Paris where danger awaits. The streamer released the clip during the French heist thriller’s panel at the Tudum fan event Saturday in São Paulo, Brazil.
In Lupin, Sy stars as professional thief Assane Diop, the only son of an immigrant from Senegal who had come to France to seek a better life for his child. Assane’s father is framed for the theft of an expensive diamond necklace by his employer, the wealthy and powerful Hubert Pellegrini, and hangs himself in his prison cell out of shame, leaving the teenage Assane an orphan.

Does Hollywood even know what to do with Omar Sy? For years, the captivating and charismatic French actor has been relegated to, at best, minor roles in tentpoles like "Captain America: The First Avenger," "X-Men: Days of Future Past," and the "Jurassic World" trilogy. He put his charms and comedy skills to work as a dog-loving mail carrier in "The Call of the Wild," but beyond that, Sy is basically a no-name in the eyes of your average U.S. moviegoer.
Thank goodness, then, for "Lupin," the Netflix heist thriller show that's almost single-handedly made Sy a known entity in the U.S. It's a bit surprising it's taken off, too, given its source material. The French TV series centers on Assane Diop (Sy), a cunning master of disguise and expert thief seeking payback against Hubert Pellegrini (Hervé Pierre) — the slimy business tycoon who framed Assane's late father and got...

At TCA on Thursday, the creatives behind Netflix’s Lupin reflected on the show’s success and its ability to transcend national borders, noting that while it draws on an iconic character, its reception also has much to do with its star, internationally beloved actor Omar Sy.
“Omar is this person. He’s genuine. He’s extremely generous and the kindest man, and at the same time, he can be tough. He’s like this mountain of muscles and can fight,” said director Louis Leterrier. “So the thing about Lupin is, he’s everything Omar is, and I think that’s the key to its success. Lupin is Omar, and Omar is Lupin.”
Letterier later expanded on what makes the show unique, saying that it represents “the confluence of many genres and a lot of talent coming with the same goal, but coming from very different walks of life or creative paths.

This piece contains spoilers for Netflix’s Lupin Part 2.
Netflix’s Lupin ended Part 1 on the ultimate fannish moment, with Officer Youssef Guedira (Soufiane Guerrab) addressing Assane Diop (Omar Sy) as “Arsène Lupin?”—and then picked up Part 2 with Assane responding in turn, identifying his new ally Guedira as “Ganimard,” the name of Lupin’s archnemesis. Throughout the latter five episodes of George Kay’s (Killing Eve) French crime drama, the gentleman thief and the police officer replicate their literary heroes’ dynamic—shifting between rivals on opposite sides of the law to something approaching friendship—while evolving the relationship beyond Maurice Leblanc’s original characters.
“Who could baffle the schemes of Arsène Lupin better than Ganimard, the patient and astute detective?” Leblanc writes early on in Arsène Lupin, Gentleman Burglar. Wherever the gentleman thief is mentioned, his law-abiding archrival quickly follows, hot on the metaphorical trail. Like the best cat-and-mouse pairs,...

You’ll have to excuse us if we’ve got a bit of a raised eyebrow after the first episode of Lupin Part 2. This is, after all, a show about deception, so we’re a bit skeptical of the tragic ending that befell — oh wait, we’re getting ahead of ourselves.
Let’s rewind, just as the hour did to reveal how Guedira came to be at LupinFest (not a real title, but it should be): It turns out the detective set an alarm for Maurice Leblanc’s birthday and also bought himself a train ticket to the fan event.

This piece contains spoilers for Netflix’s Lupin Part 2.
Netflix’s French crime drama Lupin began by adapting Maurice Leblanc’s Arsène Lupin adventure “The Queen’s Necklace,” but while the ten episodes have put new spins on other Lupin stories, the overall story concerns the eponymous necklace and how it links the Pellegrini and Diop families across twenty-five years. The recently-released Part 2 resolves the series’ biggest question: Will Assane Diop (Omar Sy) be able to have his revenge on Hubert Pellegrini (Hervé Pierre)? More vitally, will he be able to do so while upholding Arsène Lupin’s code of the gentleman thief—that is, to get justice without killing?
“Chapter 10” wraps up the Pellegrini conflict with what Assane refers to as “our last show”—an epic heist where the valuable to be stolen is a few minutes’ privacy alone with Pellegrini. That the confrontation takes place at the Théâtre...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched Part 2 of “Lupin,” streaming now on Netflix.
Much of the fun of watching Netflix’s original series “Lupin,” inspired by the Maurice Leblanc books, is in anticipating what cleverness and charm Assane Diop (played by Omar Sy) will deploy to meet his goals. Fans of the famous French novels are looking for nods to the stories, while those who have never heard of the “gentleman thief” Arsène Lupin are simply engrossed in the thrill of watching Assane, say, steal Marie Antoinette’s jewels from the Louvre.
With the anticipated premiere of part two of the story on Friday, series creator and showrunner George Kay continues to thread that needle as Assane rushes to save his son Raoul (Etan Simon) from the clutches of one of Hubert Pellegrini’s henchmen and prove Pellegrini’s guilt in framing Assane’s father.

When Netflix premiered the first season of Lupin last January, 70 million sheltered-in-place households ravenously binged it, making the series the most-watched non-English show for its premiere month on the streamer so far. Lupin steals a page from French literature. The hero of Lupin, Assane Diop (Omar Sy) is inspired by France’s iconic ‘Gentleman Thief’ Arsène Lupin, a fictional figure created by French writer Maurice Leblanc in 1905.
Lupin was the subject of some two dozen books by Leblanc, who continued adding into his literary franchise until well into the 1930s. Akin to Robin Hood, Lupin stole from the rich, and often did good deeds despite his thieving capers. He was a master of deception and disguise, a lady killer who always operated with a classy panache. With a legacy spanning more than a century, there have been plenty of live-action depictions in film and TV.

After a decade in Hollywood, French actor Omar Sy returned home to star in Netflix’s much-loved hit, Lupin. He talks about playing the charming thief, growing up with Arsenal’s Nicolas Anelka and his battle with racism
Actors, obliged to exhaustively market their wares, will pose for hours in front of posters of their latest film or TV show. They’ll hop between city premieres, sit on dreary festival panels, tell rehearsed comic stories on night-time talkshows, then get up early to be on breakfast radio. Before meeting Omar Sy, a 43-year-old Frenchman who stars in the massively popular Netflix drama Lupin, I’d never heard of an actor picking up a bucket and brush to spend a day gluing up their own billboard posters on the Paris metro. Back in 2019, when showrunner George Kay was fleshing out the protagonist for a new crime show inspired by Arsène Lupin — the “gentleman thief” at the center of a popular series of early-1900s novels by French author Maurice Leblanc — there was one quality he knew his hero would need: “Good arrogance.” “It’s arrogance you don’t object to; you just admire [it],” Kay says. “It’s: ‘I’m going to literally take all your life savings. But if I do it with a big enough smile on my face, you kind of don’t mind.

Omar Sy broke out in the 2011 box office smash The Intouchables and quickly made a name for himself worldwide as the French film rolled out to global acclaim. Now, as the 10th anniversary of that award-winning $427M grosser approaches, he’s back on the international stage with Netflix’s Lupin. The first part of Season One of the French series has been a phenomenon with Netflix in January projecting 70M households viewing the five-parter in the first 28 days (confirmed figures have not yet been released). Part 2 of Season One debuts this summer on the service (see the teaser here).

‘Bridgerton’: Netflix Hit Series Boosts Original Novel Sales, Vitamin String Quartet Catalog Streams
Bridgerton, which has become Netflix’s biggest series ever, continues to raise the bar as the series-turned-cultural phenomenon handed Julia Quinn and the Vitamin String Quartet boosts in book sales and streams, respectively. Netflix revealed that following the show’s explosive December debut, Julia Quinn’s Bridgerton novels moved up into the New York Times Best Sellers list, with The Duke and I holding the list’s top spot for four weeks. At some point in January, five novels from Quinn’s Bridgerton saga were among the New York Times’ top 10 best-selling books. The Shondaland series, however, isn’t the only book-inspired Netflix title getting literary love. Kristin Hannah’s Firefly Lane appeared on the Top 10 list a month before the show’s premiere and currently remains at #5. Netflix added that Walter Tevis’ The Queen’s Gambit and Maurice Leblanc’s original 1907 work Lupin also saw an increase in sales upon...

Connoisseurs of classic detectives took notice when Netflix debuted the first five episodes of its new French series “Lupin” last month. And those familiar with the dynamic, charismatic actor Omar Sy — best known as the lead in the international smash-hit film “Intouchables” — imagined exciting possibilities.
The French actor has crossed over into studio films like “X-Men: Days of Future Past” and “Jurassic World.” He is a leading man, and his role as the title character in this contemporary, Paris-set series promised not only to spotlight that, but to serve as another successful instance of colorblind casting. Previous adaptations involving Sy’s character were typically written or cast with a white man in the main role.
But casting aside, viewers familiar with Arsene Lupin, an early 20th century master of disguise created by Maurice Leblanc, found to their surprise that the updated character bears, at best, a tangential relationship to the gentleman thief of lore.

Netflix’s compelling French crime comedy-drama Lupin ended Part 1 on a hell of a cliffhanger. Yes, there’s Assane Diop’s (Omar Sy) son Raoul (Etan Simon) getting snatched by Pellegrini’s cleaner Leonard (Adama Niane) in the Maurice Leblanc-obsessed town of Étretat, though honestly that had been telegraphed throughout “Chapter 5.” The real stunner is when Officer Guedira (Soufiane Guerrab), perhaps the only person whose Lupin fandom rivals Assane’s, tracks down the gentleman thief and addresses him as, “Arsène Lupin?”
And that’s where Part 1 ends, with two adversaries—who might well become allies—finally meeting on the beach while fellow fans in top hats, capes, and monocles venture out to the Hollow Needle, not knowing the potential tragedy that could unfold in Étretat. Where can Lupin go from here?
Thankfully, Netflix has already confirmed that Part 2 will premiere later...

Among the many comic delights of Lupin, the French heist series that premiered on Netflix earlier this month, is an unspoken one. Time and again, the show’s hero, master thief Assane Diop (Omar Sy) is able to slip into a place unnoticed, or by assuming a minor disguise that prevents witnesses from providing an accurate description of him to law enforcement. Why is this funny? Because Omar Sy is six feet three (and, since most actors are short, seems even taller), is roughly as wide as soccer pitch, and...

As Arsène Lupin, the gentleman thief created by Maurice Leblanc in 1905, is a renowned master of disguise, it is fitting that he has inspired a number of literary characters to take up his mantle. Arguably the most recognizable riff is Lupin III, a copyright-infringing, quasi-canonical descendant by way of Japanese manga and anime. Yet it wasn’t until Netflix’s new French mystery comedy-drama series Lupin—which reinvented the source material through Omar Sy’s Lupin and the lenses of immigration, racism, and fandom—that readers and viewers have truly been challenged to consider what it means to inherit, whether through blood or through books, an iconic character’s legacy. Consider this a field guide to the many different Arsène Lupins.
What is immediately intriguing about both Lupins is that neither is as white as the top-hatted, monocled thief that Leblanc created over a century ago.

Netflix’s Lupin is primed to set a global benchmark for a French series on the service with 70M households projected to watch the five-parter through its first 28 days. That’s bigger than other recent English-language hit series Bridgerton (projected at 63M) and The Queen’s Gambit (62M actuals). The Omar Sy-starrer made its Netflix debut on January 8, and quickly became the first French series to land on the streamer’s U.S. Top 10 list.
It easily launched to No. 1 across in France and remains in that position today. Netflix reports it has also ranked No. 1 in Brazil, Vietnam, Argentina, Germany, Italy, Spain, Poland, the Netherlands, the Philippines, Sweden and many other countries. Lupin is 93% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.
The Intouchables’ Sy stars as Assane Diop who uses the world famous gentleman thief and master of disguise, Arsène Lupin, as his inspiration. The French original from Gaumont Télévision is created by George Kay in collaboration with François Uzan (Family Business) and is a contemporary adaptation of the novels penned by French writer Maurice LeBlanc, who created the character in 1905. The books have been adapted into dozens of TV series and movies over the years.
Since the release of the series, the original Leblanc book has regained interest internationally with it now trending on many marketplaces in France, Italy, Spain, the U.S., UK, Korea and others. Just yesterday, French national news radio, FranceInfo, featured the show as part of its daily kids program, FranceInfo Junior, bringing in an Arsène Lupin scholar to educate the youngsters on the character’s origins.
Set in Paris — and making slick use of the city’s locations — Lupin’s first five-part series, Dans L’Ombre D’Arsène (In The Shadow Of Arsène), introduces Sy’s Diop who, as a teenager, saw his life upended when his father died after being accused of a crime he didn’t commit. Now, Diop is out to avenge his father, and outwit pretty much everyone along the way.
Louis Leterrier directs episodes 1-3 with Marcela Said (Narcos) on 4-5. Also starring are Hervé Pierre, Nicole Garcia, Clotilde Hesme, Ludivine Sagnier, Antoine Gouy, Shirine Boutella and Soufiane Guerrab. Isabelle Degeorges and Nathan Franck are producers.
Here’s Sy celebrating the news:
70 millions, that's insane!!

This piece contains spoilers for Netflix’s Lupin.
Lupin, Netflix’s witty French mystery drama about a modern-day gentleman thief, constructs all of its cleverly layered mythology around a figure known as Arsène Lupin: smart, suave, a master of disguise, always one step ahead. Considering how much attention Assane Diop (Omar Sy) invests into adopting Lupin’s identity, not to mention how Officer Guedira (Soufiane Guerrab) devotes his equally fannish knowledge to following Diop’s tracks, it makes perfect sense to wonder, is Arsène Lupin real?
And here is where the answer is tricky, in a fun way: Arsène Lupin is not a real person, but he is a real fictional character outside of Lupin the series. Created in 1905 by French author Maurice Leblanc as a response to the popularity of Arthur Conan Doyle’s Great Detective Sherlock Holmes (created in 1887), the charismatic burglar is a reversal of Holmes in almost every way,...

Netflix’s Lupin made its debut on the service Friday January 8, and quickly became the first French series to land on the streamer’s U.S. Top 10 list. It entered the overall list at No. 8 and was No. 6 on the U.S. series list on Saturday, before jumping up to No. 3 on both rosters Sunday (it’s No. 1 in France and elsewhere). Netflix began sharing Daily Top 10 lists last February.
The Intouchables’ Omar Sy stars as Assane Diop who uses the world famous gentleman thief and master of disguise, Arsène Lupin, as his inspiration.

Arsène Lupin is a character with a great deal of currency to the French; created by author Maurice Leblanc in 1905, this master thief-turned-detective, a master detective has anchored many short stories and films. None of this character’s history may be known to an American audience as they contemplate hitting play on Netflix’s new series “Lupin,” starring Omar Sy (“The Intouchables”) as a contemporary spin on the character; it shouldn’t stop anyone from checking out a propulsive and cleverly made piece of work about one great heist and its ongoing aftermath.
Sy, here, plays Assane Diop, a Senegalese immigrant whose father died as a result of a false accusation; working as a chauffeur for a wealthy Parisian family, this unlucky fellow was accused of stealing a necklace in their care, one that had belonged to Marie Antoinette. That this name suggests overtones of indolence and selfishness seems no mistake.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “Lupin,” streaming now on Netflix.
When Netflix’s “Lupin” filmed its premiere episode heist sequence overnight in the Louvre, the cast and crew had ample time to roam around and take in the art in between setups and shots. Actor Omar Sy even found himself alone with the Mona Lisa for almost 20 minutes. It was an experience that gave him a new appreciation for a place he had previously visited as a child on a school trip, and one that he says he will “never forget.”
That sentiment doesn’t stop there, though. Working on “Lupin” also allowed Sy to re-experience and reflect on Maurice Leblanc’s Arsène Lupin novels that he read as a child. “Lupin is so French that you cannot grow up in France and not know who is Arsène Lupin,” Sy tells Variety. Between the books,...

In 1905, French writer Maurice Leblanc created a character named Arsène Lupin, who embodies one of my favorite archetypes in all of storytelling: the gentleman thief. Since his creation, the suave, crafty Lupin has appeared in several short stories, books, comics, and movies over the years, and even inspired a grandson character, Lupin III, who […]
