What do “Some Like It Hot,” “High Noon,” “The Devil Wears Prada,” “Dog Day Afternoon” and “Almost Famous” have in common? These popular and beloved films are making their long and winding road to the stage.
Since Disney asked Julie Taymor to find a way to bring Simba to Broadway, virtually every studio has been going through its archives to see what might transfer from screen to stage. (The opposite had been the traditional course of events.) Disney’s catalog of animated hits, alongside franchise spinoffs like “Wicked” and “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” attract a built-in family crowd. But the scorecard on many recent adaptations has been mixed: “Mrs. Doubtfire,” “Tootsie,” “Pretty Woman” and even Billy Crystal’s “Mr. Saturday Night” — which closes Sept. 4 after a five-month run — are a few that came and went.

The Hustle premiered in 2019 to not-so-flattering reviews. Regardless, audiences appear to have enjoyed the film, particularly the performances of its top stars. The Hustle was directed by Chris Addison, who is best known for his work on TV shows like Veep. The story was written by Stanley Shapiro, Paul Henning, Dale Launer, and Jac Schaeffer. Here’s a summary of the synopsis of the movie, according to Rotten Tomatoes: “Josephine Chesterfield is a glamorous, seductive British woman who has a penchant for defrauding gullible men out of their money. Into her well-ordered, meticulous world comes Penny Rust, a cunning and fun-loving Australian woman

The nominees list for the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences Board of Governors has been revealed before its June 6-10 balloting.
The candidates are hoping to fill the open seats on the 54-member board. Up to four candidates are set for the open seat at each each branch, which carries three governors with staggered terms per branch.
Board members who have termed out include Academy president David Rubin (from the casting directors branch), Jan Pascale (production designers), Mark Johnson (producers) and Nancy Utley (PR).
Candidates vying for a seat include actress Marlee Matlin, composer Hans Zimmer, and executive Toby Emmerich.
The slate faces some crucial tests once installed, including selecting a new Academy president and new CEO to replace outgoing Dawn Hudson. The Academy also must overcome perceptions created in a rocky year, with its Will Smith Oscars slap incident and the uproar over what categories would make it into the Oscars broadcast.

When My Cousin Vinny arrived in theaters on March 13, 1992, nobody had any idea we’d still be talking about it 30 years later. A midmarket, fish-out-water comedy about a streetwise Brooklyn attorney (Joe Pesci) who travels to Alabama with his plucky girlfriend (Marisa Tomei) to help his innocent nephew (Ralph Macchio) beat a bum murder rap, the film didn’t get much promotion out of the gate. Instead, the studio that produced it, 20th Century Fox, invested heavily in higher-profile offerings like Alien 3 and White Men Can’t Jump. Wayne’s World...

Stars: Anne Hathaway, Rebel Wilson, Alex Sharp, Ingrid Oliver, Emma Davies, Dean Norris, Casper Christensen | Written by Stanley Shapiro, Paul Henning, Dale Launer, Jac Schaeffer | Directed by Chris Addison
Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson star as a pair of rival con artists in The Hustle, a remake of 1988′s Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (with Michael Caine and Steve Martin), which was itself a remake of 1964′s Bedtime Story, with David Niven and Marlon Brando. That might sound like a tantalising proposition on paper, but the actual film is a profound disappointment with an almost criminal lack of laughs.
Wilson plays low-rent Aussie grifter Penny Rust, whose regular scam involves fleecing gullible men she meets on a dating app. On a train to the South of France, she meets high class con artist Josephine Chesterfield (Hathaway), who immediately schemes to divert Penny from her home turf of Riviera town Beaumont-sur-Mer, on the...

You don’t need immersive technologies like Dolby Cinema, Screen X or 4Dx to feel the effects of The Hustle. After 94 minutes without a single laugh, you’ll definitely feel the pain knowing that you’ve wasted time and money on this dreadful farce. Allegedly a remake of the far superior Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (which itself was a remake of Bedtime Story), the Chris Addison-directed picture credits four screenwriters and yet adds nothing to the original formula nor does it do anything exciting with a well-established genre built on double and triple crosses.
Of the four credited writers, two have passed on years ago, previously credited with Bedtime Story. Dale Launer received credit for this mess as the writer of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. This leaves Jac Schaeffer, the only new writer with a credit to bear the brunt of the shame for a picture that no doubt was conceived...

Chicago – As the “Oceans Eight” remake of last year proved, it is simply not enough to redo a film and flip the gender focus. Anne Hathaway may be the kiss of death for this genre, as she appeared both in O8 and the current “The Hustle,” which in turn is a remake of “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” (1988). Rebel Wilson, doing what Rebel Wilson does, portrays her sidekick.
Rating: 2.0/5.0
Hathaway and Wilson have little chemistry together, but that is the least of sins for “The Hustle.” Not only is the title lazy as hell, but the whole she-bang (ha) is flat and unfunny. It’s been years since I’ve seen the original – which was in itself a remake of the 1964 film “Bedtime Story” – but both those films must have more life than this tepid exercise in dreck. The screenplay credits list four names, a sure tip that the film we’re about to see is lost,...

There is a smart movie nestled somewhere in director Chris Addison’s romp, “The Hustle,” but you have to weed through a whole lot of foolery to get to it. The new film is ripe for big laughs with Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson as, respectively, the snobby British bombshell with sticky fingers and the rough-around-the-edges though equally cunning con artist, but neither actress is given rich enough material to bring the film’s most interesting ideas to the finish line.
Hollywood has had a growing fascination with the female swindler, often to confront a larger issue of sexism and lack of female agency. And for about the first 20 minutes of “The Hustle,” it looks like screenwriter Jac Schaeffer — sharing credit with her antecedents, the creators of 1964’s “Bedtime Story,” Stanley Shapiro and Paul Henning, as well as Dale Launer, who wrote that film’s 1988 remake, “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” — is...

Rebel Wilson and Anne Hathaway tossed aside any urge to be ladylike and went right into potty-mouthed name-calling when asked to ad-lib for their upcoming film “The Hustle.”
While on “The Graham Norton Show” Friday promoting the female-centered remake of the 1988 comedy “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,” Wilson said that there was a lot of improvising during filming, which she and Hathaway really began to enjoy.
“Annie especially,” Wilson said. “She enjoys when I, like, insult her.”
“It’s true. You’re really good at it,” Hathaway acknowledged. “My favorite is when you called me an animatronic c— tease.”
Wilson nodded, “Yeah. On that day, you really looked like her.”

“The Hustle” is the second gender-swapped remake Anne Hathaway has starred in after last year’s “Ocean’s 8.” And she’s now teaming up with Rebel Wilson for this new take on “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,” the 1988 comedy starring Michael Caine and Steve Martin as a pair of con artists who team up for a big score.
MGM released the first trailer for “The Hustle” Tuesday, and in it, Wilson plays an amateur con artist who is taken under the wing by Hathaway’s elegant pro, sporting a sophisticated British accent no less. Their motto is that men will always underestimate women, and they can use that to their advantage.
Hathaway asks Wilson in the trailer, why are women better suited to the con job than men? “Because we’re used to faking it,” Wilson replies. “Because no man will ever believe a woman is smarter than she is.”

Rebel Wilson and Anne Hathaway will give “dirty rotten men” a run for their money this spring – that’s the tagline in this new trailer for MGM’s The Hustle, a female-centric remake of 1988’s Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. That comedy starred Steve Martin and Michael Caine.
Directed by Chris Addison, with a screenplay by Stanley Shapiro & Paul Henning and Dale Launer and Jac Schaeffer, The Hustle stars Hathaway and Wilson as two con artists – “one low rent and the other high class,” says MGM – who team up to “take down the dirty rotten men who have wronged them.”
In the trailer, Wilson poses as a grieving sister seeking her missing sibling. “I’m here to find my sister. She’s been taken by men who sell hot white virgins to kajillionaires on yachts,” she tells a stranger on a train, racial specificity and all.
The Hustle is produced by Roger Birnbaum and Rebel Wilson.

House flipping Hollywood icon Diane Keaton, currently appearing on the silver screen in the star-studded comedy “Book Club,” which Variety’s own Dennis Harvey described as a “comfort-food movie that’s been pre-masticated by committee to the consistency of pudding (with even less flavor),” set her well-honed real estate sights on downtown Tucson, Ariz., with the $1.5 million purchase of a restored 1890s Sonoran row house in the historic, gritty and rapidly gentrifying Barrio Viejo neighborhood just south of the desert city’s downtown core. The limestone-sheathed adobe structure, which arguably resembles a commercial building or even a motel more than a traditional private residence, dates to the 1890s and is finished with fresh white stucco on the exterior. Exposed adobe and mud-plastered interior walls honor the region’s architectural roots and anchors the residence to Tucson’s history which, being just 60 miles north of the border, is inextricably intertwined with Mexico.

In the 25 years since My Cousin Vinny was released, there’s been one Oscar win for a cast member (Marisa Tomei) and one real attempt at a sequel. In 2012, Dale Launer, who wrote the original script, proposed a follow-up to Vincent Laguardia Gambini’s (Joe Pesci) surprise Alabama victory that would see the Brooklyn native practicing law in the United Kingdom, where he would undoubtedly run afoul of procedures and protocols, with possibly hilarious results. Pesci and Tomei had reportedly signed on for Vinny and Mona Lisa’s ongoing adventures as fish out of water, but the Spider-Man: Homecoming actress eventually dropped out, and the project was shelved.

It turns out it wasn’t just the defense that was wrong, as Marisa Tomei so famously recites as spitfire car expert Mona Lisa Vito in “My Cousin Vinny.” Vito is renowned in the movie world for her automotive knowledge (“my father was a mechanic, his father was a mechanic…”), but it turns out, one of her statements on the witness stand — the one that arguably clinched Tomei’s Oscar win — wasn’t entirely accurate. In speaking with TheWrap for the 25th anniversary of the classic courtroom comedy, which also starred Joe Pesci, screenwriter Dale Launer explained that there were three cars made in.

As with any actor whose work I love, there are films that stand out as particularly great in the career of Steve Martin, and one of those films is Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. There are many great things about Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Michael Caine is a perfect foil for Martin, whose work as nascent con man Freddy Benson is inspired. Frank Oz does a terrific job of creating this romantic, beautiful French fantasyland where people are going to believe the incredible lies told by Freddy and Caine’s master bullshit artist Lawrence Jamieson. Glenne Headly gives one of her most nimble performances as Janet Colgate, the poor defenseless tourist who ends up targeted by Freddy and Lawrence. Ian McDiarmid, best known to the fanboy nation as Emperor Palpatine, is dry and deadly as Arthur, Lawrence’s manservant. Miles Goodman’s score is terrific, one of the great comedy scores of the ‘80s,...

Buckle up Walter, you're in enough trouble as it is!
Blake Edwards, the middle brow genius, if you don't mind my calling him that, behind The Pink Panther (1963), brings us an entry in that excellent comic sub-genre, the worst night ever. But unlike After Hours (1985), the night from hell in Blind Date (1987) is just the beginning. Edwards takes Dale Launer's screenplay and finishes with a final act that is uniquely his own in style. One significant difference is that while the Pink Panther films ended on ambiguous notes for hero and love interest, the 1980's will not allow for anything but a set up for a final kiss and a happily-ever-after. The original music by Henry Mancini runs exactly parallel with its 80's-ness.

A couple of weeks ago, we told you about the troubled production of director Barry Sonnenfeld's Men in Black III, reporting on the myriad writers, the troubled script being hammered away upon by those myriad writers, as well as the various delays and cessations of filming. Well, my friends, people working on the film are starting to talk, and it seems things are even worse than we thought.
In a recent article, The Hollywood Reporter has pulled back the curtain surrounding this plagued movie and given us a peek at a production completely out of control.
In our previous piece, we mentioned that the flick's start date had been pushed from October to November 2010 due to concerns about the script — and, man, were those concerns valid. If you have read the site, you have likely noticed our reports about the delays and scripting issues surrounding Men In Black III. The production is currently on hiatus until March 28 and David Koepp is hard at work fixing complex script issues. These delays are costing Sony millions of dollars, but those cost are reportedly more than offset because the studio started shooting early enough in 2010 in order to save millions for New York tax breaks, according to THR.
The decision to delay the production has caused fans and Hollywood insiders to question what Sony is thinking!
