The International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam is putting the livelihood of documentary filmmakers at the heart of their industry program this year. On Monday, a panel of experts gathered to discuss the issues filmmakers face in making a living in the industry, from pay disparity, devaluation, lack of information and the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Ushering in the conversation was specialist Rebecca Day from Film in Mind, an organization advocating for better mental health in the film industry. Adriek van Nieuwenhuyzen, the head of the industry office at International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA), says that the primary objective of her team is to put the filmmakers at the center of the festival’s activities for industry professionals.
“The key is that we really care about the filmmakers and what they are trying to achieve. Then we adapt to what is happening in the market, and try to make sure that we get the right people to support them,” she tells Variety.
She says their work is “about the filmmakers, not only the directors but the producers too, and for us it’s important to follow them in their endeavour to make creative documentaries.” She adds: “We do everything we can to bring them to the attention of potential financiers, sales agents and distributors. But it is all centered around the creators of this work.”

The prestigious honor comes with a €15,000 cash prize. It is infused with love.”
Glob has been following Soko’s career for well over a decade. According to the Villa Medici website, the figurative painter is “known for her political stance on the art of portraiture, claiming the need to use it as a tool of empowerment and deconstruction of marginalization or domination. The 35th edition of the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam, will open with the world premiere of Iranian-Dutch filmmaker Niki Padidar’s “All You See.”
The festival has also revealed the titles in its competition lineups. In all, 277 titles will be screened at the in-person festival.
