As much a character study as it is a murder mystery, “A Dark Place” is a little under-complicated in both departments. This drama (formerly shown as “Steel Country”) stars Andrew Scott as a small-town Pennsylvania man on the autism spectrum who becomes obsessed with a local child’s seemingly accidental death, ruffling feathers as he conducts his own guileless “investigation.”
One of three top-billed Irish thespians capably playing Yanks here for Brit director Simon Fellows, Scott offers a compelling turn that easily carries the film, as it must. Still, the generally well-acted and competently crafted film should have more depth and punch, given the inherently powerful themes it places center-stage. The result is diverting enough, yet ends up more a mildly offbeat time-filler than something memorable.

I’ve got an intense trailer here for an upcoming backwoods murder mystery thriller called A Dark Place. I enjoy a good murder mystery film and this one actually looks like it could be pretty good.
When a young boy turns up dead in a sleepy Western Pennsylvania town, Donald, a local garbage truck driver, takes it upon himself to play detective. He embarks on an obsessive investigation to prove that the boy had been murdered, leading to unthinkable and harrowing consequences.
The movie stars Andrew Scott (Sherlock, Victor Frankenstein, Alice Through the Looking Glass), with a supporting cast that includes Bronagh Waugh, Denise Gough, J.D. Evermore, Griff Furst, and Sandra Ellis Lafferty.
A Dark Place was directed by Simon Fellows and it will be released on April 12th.

"You know what?! You don't know everything you think you know..." Shout Factory has released the first trailer for an indie backwoods mystery thriller titled A Dark Place, formerly titled Steel Country when it initially premiered at festivals last year. This disappearance mystery film played at the Edinburgh, Galway, and Busan Film Festivals last year, and is getting a small theatrical release this spring. When a young boy goes missing in a sleepy backwoods town, a local sanitation truck driver, Donald, plays detective, embarking on a precarious and obsessive investigation. Andrew Scott stars, with an indie cast including Bronagh Waugh, Denise Gough, J.D. Evermore, Griff Furst, and Sandra Ellis Lafferty. This actually looks solid, even if it is all a bit cliche. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Simon Fellows' A Dark Place, direct from YouTube: When a young boy turns up dead in a sleepy Western Pennsylvania town,...

‘Catching Fire’ vs. ‘Frozen’: Weekend box office early estimates (photo: Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen in ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’) It’s gonna be a battle to the death between water and fire at the domestic box office. Sorry, couldn’t resist the cheesy lead, but … The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Frozen will be vying for the top spot at the North American box office this weekend, December 6-8, 2013. New entry Out of the Furnace, despite the presence of The Dark Knight‘s Christian Bale, is no competition, after opening to chilly per-theater figures last week. More on Out of the Furnace in a follow-up post. Currently at 4,163 locations, Catching Fire, starring Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and Liam Hemsworth, was the top movie on Friday, grossing $7.5 million according to Nikki Finke‘s early, rough estimates. Despite 3D surcharges, the fact that it’s a more recent release,...

‘Catching Fire’ box office: To surpass Iron Man 3 in North America? (photo: Sam Claflin as Finnick Odair in ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’) Thanksgiving was celebrated this past week in the United States. Although the American economy remains in a seemingly never-ending rut, Lionsgate has much to be thankful for, financially speaking: on the weekend of November 29-December 1, 2013, Francis Lawrence’s $110-130 million-budgeted The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, starring Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and Liam Hemsworth, added another $74.5 million from 4,163 North American locations according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. Even if Lionsgate’s estimates are (once again) off by a couple of percentage points, that’s a remarkable hold for a sequel. In fact, Catching Fire was down only 53% compared to its first weekend, which included $25+ million from Thursday night and Friday midnight screenings. And let’s not forget that the Hunger Games sequel blew off...

‘Catching Fire’ weekend box office: Record breaker with qualifiers — though a huge success all the same (photo: Josh Hutcherson and Jennifer Lawrence in ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’) For the weekend of November 22-24, 2013, Lionsgate overestimated the domestic box office take of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire by nearly 2%. Doesn’t sound like much? What about $3 million? That figure can make a hell of a difference when we’re talking box office records. In fact, it can be the difference between a movie breaking and not breaking a box office record. All day Sunday heralded as the biggest 2D opening ever in the United States and Canada, the Francis Lawrence-directed Catching Fire actually opened below two movies: Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises (2012) and The Dark Knight (2008). And when inflation is taken into account, as it always should, the The Hunger Games sequel falls behind a couple of other titles as well.

‘Catching Fire’ weekend box office: ‘The Hunger Games’ sequel poised for biggest domestic November debut ever? (photo: Jennifer Lawrence and Sam Claflin as Finnick Odair in ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’) On Friday, November 22, 2013, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (slightly) surpassed the higher end of early North American box office predictions, pulling in an estimated $70.5 million (including $25.25 million from Thursday evening shows) from 4,163 sites as per Box Office Mojo. Starring Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, and Josh Hutcherson, the Francis Lawrence-directed The Hunger Games sequel seems poised to shatter the current November opening-weekend record held by The Twilight Saga: New Moon. But then again, comparisons between the two movies may not be exactly fair; more on that below. Last week, some box office pundits (and, reportedly, Lionsgate Pictures as well) were expecting Catching Fire to open somewhere near Shane Black and Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man 3‘s $174.14 million...

Jennifer Lawrence ‘Catching Fire’ weekend box office: Surpassing ‘Twilight: New Moon’ for biggest domestic November opening ever? (photo: Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen in ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’) Starring Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and Liam Hemsworth, the Francis Lawrence-directed The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, is expected to collect anywhere between $63-$70 million (according to Nikki Finke) and $67.5 million (according to Deadline.com) at 4,163 North American locations on Friday, November 22, 2013. That figure includes an estimated $25.25 million from Thursday evening shows, as found at Box Office Mojo. (Saturday addendum: Catching Fire opened with an estimated $70.5 million. See also: “‘Catching Fire’ Weekend Box Office: Poised to Surpass ‘New Moon,’ ‘The Hunger Games’?”) Early, unofficial weekend estimates have the second installment in the Hunger Games movie franchise grossing anywhere between $140-$150 million in the U.S. and Canada by Sunday evening. Some early prognosticators had Catching Fire soaring much higher, up to Iron Man 3 heights ($174.14 million,...

‘Catching Fire’ movie box office: ‘Midnight’ shows nearly 30% ahead of ‘The Hunger Games’ (photo: Jennifer Lawrence in ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’) Francis Lawrence’s The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, starring Best Actress Academy Award winner Jennifer Lawrence (Silver Linings Playbook), Liam Hemsworth, and Josh Hutcherson, raked in a remarkable $25.25 million from evening shows on Thursday, November 21, 2013, in North America (playing at 4,163 locations on Friday), according to estimates found at Box Office Mojo. That’s 28 percent higher than the $19.74 million at 2,565 locations earned by its predecessor, Gary Ross’ The Hunger Games; it’s also one of the biggest domestic "midnight" debuts ever. (See more on that below. Scroll down to check out a video of Jennifer Lawrence yelling back at yelling photographers at the Catching Fire New York premiere. ‘Catching Fire’ movie box office: Strong Brazil opening points to bigger international hit than ‘The Hunger Games’ (photo: Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson in ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’) Francis Lawrence’s The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, toplining Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, and Josh Hutcherson, debuted in Brazil last Friday, November 15, 2013. A national holiday ("Proclamation of the Republic"), November 15 has proven to be a highly profitable "opening date" in Brazil; in 2012, Bill Condon’s The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2 broke both single-day and opening-weekend records at the Brazilian box office. Now comes Catching Fire, which far surpassed the box office take of its predecessor. Surely it’s no coincidence that both the Hunger Games and Twilight franchises currently belong to the Summit Entertainment / Lionsgate Pictures combo. Or that both franchises have been/are being distributed in Brazil by Paris Filmes, possibly that country’s biggest homegrown film distribution entity.

Writer/director Ryan Smith's debut feature 'After' has been snapped up by Mongrel Media for distribution in the Us. The new mystery thriller finds a couple of bus crash survivors alone in the small town of Pearl. But amongst the surrounding darkness it seems they might not be alone after all. The trailer is shown below and it the movie looks to be somewhere between Dean Koontz's 'Phantoms' and Stephen King's 'The Mist'. The project stars 'Magic City's Steven Strait and the gorgeous Karolina Wydra who you'll see later this year in sci-fi thriller 'Europa Report'. Madison Lintz, Sandra Ellis Lafferty, Ric Reitz and Jackson Walker all co-star....

The trailer for After is mystifying. The film's first trailer shows a black fog that threatens two characters: Freddy (Steven Strait) and Ana (Karolina Wydra). The darkness encroaches on the small town in which they are now trapped. What is the mist? And, is the narrative something from one of the character's nightmares? It is too early to tell, but fans of mystery will want to take a look at the reel below. In the clip, Freddy and Ana look for a way out of township of Pearl. The enclosing mist is moving so fast that they only have a matter of hours to find escape. As well, something is stalking these characters. Booms from behind a door are definitely created by a monstrous being, of some sort. Have a look at the film's first official trailer below. Release Date: September 12th (Theatres). Director: Ryan Smith. Writers: Jason Parish, and Ryan Smith.
