"You've been dealt a bad deal… so don't make it worse." Did anyone know about this? There's a brand new 2022 remake of a classic 1940s film noir film titled D.O.A., premiering soon at the Fort Lauderdale Film Festival. The original D.O.A., directed by Rudolph Maté & starring Edmond O'Brien, was about a P.I. named Frank Bigelow who is told he's been poisoned and has only a few days to live, so he tries to find out who killed him and why. "While the story shares a title and premise with the original movie… most of the plot elements are original," the director of this new one explains. "With the clock ticking, Bigelow descends into a world of crooks and double-dealers, treacherous women and violent men, slashing through a tangle of conspiracies to figure out who 'killed' him & why." This one stars John Doe as Frank, with Paola Duque,...

A drifter with a guitar stirs things up in Christopher Hicky's small-town yarn The Grace of Jake, rolling into tiny Palestine, Arkansas, and admitting up front that "I came here to kill somebody." That threat notwithstanding, menace is not the primary mode of this easygoing, slice-of-life film, whose best moments find that drifter (real-life musician/actor Jake La Botz) making friends with unexpectedly welcoming locals. With a little more fine-tuning, Hicky's feature debut might have made a stab at the fest circuit; as it stands, its take on grudges and reconciliation will play best with heartland viewers on video.

Given True Detective’s penchant for teasing out legendary tales, it’s fitting that a king (or, rather, the shadow of one) hovers over the second season’s third episode. It opens with what appears to be an Elvis impersonator (played by Jake La Botz) decked out in a shimmering powder-blue suit. He’s on his knees, pomaded hair slicked back, hamming it up onstage at Ray Velcoro’s local dive bar, not by lip-synching an Elvis tune but “The Rose,” a Conway Twitty cover first made famous by Bette Midler.Only two people are present to witness this spectacle: Ray and a man sitting across from him. We later learn it’s his father, with whom he has a fraught relationship. To wit: “You lacked grit,” Ray's father grumbles to his son, whose chest currently spurts with true blood from the two riot shells he was shot with in episode two’s nail-biting conclusion.

Brothers should have each other’s back, but love can make you blind… with bloodlust. Brotherly love is replaced with brimming rage in the southern gothic musical, Ghost Brothers of Darkland County, a collaboration between legendary singer/songwriters T Bone Burnett and John Mellencamp, along with the master of macabre, Stephen King. With the show’s tour kicking off in November, the cast has been announced.
The musical’s album became available on June 4th, and in addition to featuring the timeless chops of Elvis Costello, Kris Kristofferson and many more, it also showcases the voice acting talents of Matthew McConaughey and Meg Ryan. For more information on the album and the musical, visit:

Much is being made of the fact that Stephen King has—for the time being—decided to forego an eBook of his latest novel, Joyland. Several articles imply that he is no longer a fan of the digital format. Others argue that he shouldn’t get to decide how people experience a book, ignoring the fact that digital rights are separate from print rights and that authors get to choose how to exploit them. As illustrated in my first essay here at FEARnet, King has long been a champion of eBooks—an innovator, even. There was a digital version of The Wind Through the Keyhole last year and there will be one of Doctor Sleep later on this year. King isn’t challenging the format. He simply wants readers to have the retro feeling of holding a paperback in this one case. That’s what Hard Case Crime is all about,...

It's taken 55 years to bring On the Road to the big screen. Here, director Walter Salles talks about crisscrossing America, sending his cast to 'beatnik bootcamp' – and how obtaining Jack Kerouac's 1951 manuscript of the book inspired him to film the unfilmable
Walter Salles first picked up a copy of On the Road as a student in Brazil in the 1970s. The country was under a military dictatorship at the time, torture and censorship were rife, and the dog-eared book was passed furtively from hand to hand, a window to a kind of freedom he and his fellow students could only dream about. It affected him profoundly: "The way they lived was the way in which we wanted to live, so the book had a very resonant quality for my generation. The idea of movement as an instrument to better understand who you are and who you could eventually be...

Southern Gothic once referred exclusively to scribes and literature from the land of kudzu and mint juleps. Today, a Google search of the genre serves up everything from Bon Iver’s Wisconsin folk rock to gory novels by Australian Nick Cave.
Will a new musical from Stephen King and John Mellencamp also fit into the category?
Veteran Broadway performer Shuler Hensley is betting on it.
