Imagine “Deal or No Deal” set on an exotic island, with its 13 participants facing extreme challenges, testing their limits and literally crawling through mud. Except you don’t have to – it’s already here.
“What if the Banker had a private island and decided to put his contestants through an extreme game to find one winner? The craziness of the idea is, I think, what we and NBC rallied around,” says Sharon Levy, CEO at Endemol Shine North America.
Levy also executive produces “Deal or No Deal Island” alongside Matt Kunitz, Matt Apps, Sarah Happel Jackson, Howie Mandel, DJ Nurre and Sean Loughlin.
“You say the title and people are like: ‘Is that for real?’ Our favorite comments on social media have been about whether this is a ‘30 Rock’ pitch. I take that as the highest, and best, compliment,” she adds, referencing the sitcom created by Tina Fey.

When “Wipeout” creator Matt Kunitz began planning the show’s revival for TBS, he knew one element had to return: Those iconic, large red balls. Everything else could be updated — and has been, from new hosts John Cena and Nicole Byer to a revised game play that now features teams of two.
“Our marching orders were to make it bigger, bolder, edgier,” Kunitz says of the show, which returns April 1. “Bigger and bolder, that’s easy. That’s the design of the course, which had to be more competitive and more athletic. And edgier, that really is about our hosts.”
But bigger and bolder in the time of Covid-19 meant a major undertaking for the new “Wipeout.” Another safety issue the show faced in its return was the death of a 38-year-old contestant on set last year.
Nonetheless, the escapist nature of “Wipeout” seemed ripe for return in these uncertain times.

Now we know how some very physically fit people will be celebrating the end of the coronavirus quarantine: TBS has ordered a 20-episode revival of the game show “Wipeout,” the network announced Wednesday.
The original series, which aired on ABC from 2008-2014, featured contestants competing against each other in what was billed as the world’s largest obstacle course. The show celebrated athletic achievement but also reveled in the comedic possibilities of failure as contestants navigated events like “Sucker Punch,” the “Sweeper,” the “Dreadmill” or the show’s most well known obstacle, “Big Balls.”
The TBS revival will update the premise with new obstacles and changes to the basic format, with games consisting of three rounds, and a new, three-stage obstacle course consisting of multiple strategy and decision points. But fans of the original series can relax, as “Big Balls,” giant red spheres positioned on tall polls that contestants must run across,...

The world’s largest obstacle course is coming back to television after TBS ordered a reboot of Wipeout.
Endemol Shine North America is producing a 20-episode run for the WarnerMedia-backed cable network.
The series ran for seven seasons and 130 episodes on ABC between 2008 and 2014. Created by Matt Kunitz and Scott Larsen, the series, which was originally filmed at Sable Ranch in Santa Clarita, went on to become a massive international hit with local versions in more than 30 territories including the UK and Germany.
The obstacle course competition will return with new format twists. Each game has been designed into three rounds and now features a three-stage, obstacle course consisting of multiple strategy and decision points designed to further challenge, and wear out, the stamina of the competitors. The big red balls, an iconic staple of the show, are also back.
Producers will kick off casting virtually with production plans...

The big balls are back. TBS has given a 20-episode order to a reboot of “Wipeout,” the obstacle course reality competition that originally aired on ABC between 2008 and 2014.
Given the current worldwide production shutdown, it’s unclear when the new “Wipeout” might eventually make it to air. But when it does, TBS is promising an even more bruising obstacle course.
“The re-imagined series will feature new format twists and elements that will push contestants’ athleticism and willpower to even greater extremes, all while delivering some pretty epic fails,” according to a TBS press release. “Each game has been designed into three rounds and now features a jaw-dropping, three-stage, obstacle course consisting of multiple strategy and decision points designed to further challenge, and wear out, the stamina of the competitors.”
And yes, the signature “Wipeout” massive red balls will return to trigger plenty of contestant wipeouts.
