"What matters here is being loved, child, not loving..." Buffalo 8 Films has revealed an official US trailer for an indie romantic musical titled Love Gets a Room, the latest film made by Spanish filmmaker Rodrigo Cortés (best known for directing both Buried and Red Lights a decade ago). This first premiered in Spain in 2021, but is only now getting an official US release this summer. Inspired by true events during the 1942 Nazi occupation of Poland, Love Gets a Room is the story of a Jewish stage actress who must make the gut-wrenching decision to follow her heart or escape the Warsaw ghetto. Told in real time like Cortés' acclaimed Buried, the film is a romantic tale of love and survival in the face of harrowing circumstances. This stars Clara Rugaard, Ferdia Walsh-Peelo, Mark Ryder, Anastasia Hille, Magnus Krepper, and Henry Goodman. With cinematography by Rafa García. "With masterful direction and outstanding performances,...

Dark, violent historical epics have a special place in my heart, and the upcoming Mads Mikkelsen film "The Bastard" looks like it will be period-piece perfection. The film, which stars Mikkelsen as a 17th-century soldier charged with taking over a large swath of land for the king of Denmark, looks like the kind of movie that belongs alongside "The Northman" or "Valhalla Rising," which also starred Mikkelsen. The upcoming Danish-language film is still in production, so there aren't many marketing materials to share just yet. Thankfully, there are at least some great behind-the-scenes stills shared by the production company behind "The Bastard," Zentropa.
While it's still early, there are some interesting details available about the film, including the premise, possible release window, and more about the cast and crew. Here's everything we know so far about this moody-looking cinematic slice of Scandinavian history.

"I've never felt like this" Netflix has released an official trailer for a passionate young love film titled JJ+E, which is a reference to the two lovers in this: John-John and Elisabeth. Set in Stockholm in 2021, the film is also known as Vinterviken or Vinterviken 2021 in Sweden, a reference to the swimming place where they go (see Google Maps) on the outskirts of Stockholm. The two youngsters are raised in the same city, yet they live light years apart, separated economically, socially and culturally. That is until the day they start in the same high school class. Based on the award-winning book by Mats Wahl, launching on Netflix worldwide this September. The film stars Mustapha Aarab and Elsa Öhrn as "JJ+E" along with Magnus Krepper, Marika Lagercrantz, Albin Grenholm, Loreen, and Simon Mezher. This actually seems much better than most teen romance from the US, not only because it just looks better,...

After a relatively prolific output in the 90s and 00s––including her widely acclaimed 2001 drama Fat Girl––Catherine Breillat hasn’t made a film since 2013’s Abuse of Weakness starring Isabelle Huppert. The French filmmaker is now finally set to return with a new project.
Breillat will direct a remake of May el-Toukhy’s Queen of Hearts, which was selected as Denmark’s Oscar entry in 2019, Les Inrockuptibles reports. The erotic drama followed a lawyer and mother named who gets romantically involved with her teenage stepson, causing strife in her family. Titled Inavouable (which roughly translates to unspeakable or unmentionable), Breillat’s remake will star Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi and Olivier Rabourdin and production is aiming to kick off this summer, so expect a 2022 festival debut.
Zhuo-Ning Su said in our review of the original film, “In Danish writer/director May el-Toukhy’s gripping, thought-provoking erotic drama Queen of Hearts, problematic sex happens at an unlikely place.

Netflix has ordered “The Unlikely Murderer,” a Swedish limited series based on Thomas Pettersson’s eponymous 2018 award-winning book.
The five-part drama series is a fictional interpretation of how Stig Engström, the graphic designer named as the suspected murderer of Sweden’s prime minister Olof Palme, managed to elude justice right up to his death through a combination of audacity, luck and a perplexed police force.
Engström’s murder was not planned well, he did everything wrong from the beginning and almost no one believed his lies about what he actually did during that fateful night in 1986 in Stockholm, Sweden. The series will question how police could have let the suspect get away, despite tracking him.
The series is written by Wilhelm Behrman and Niklas Rockström. Charlotte Brändström (“The Witcher”) is the conceptual director and will helm the first two episodes of the show.
The Swedish-language series will be produced by Flx,...

Trine Dyrholm is outstanding as a liberal-minded lawyer who has a predatory affair with her stepson in May el-Toukhy’s excellent Danish drama
There’s a core of steel to this very enthralling and glossy movie from Danish-Egyptian director and co-writer May el-Toukhy. It’s exactly the kind of drama that might prove binge-worthily addictive if it was a three- or four-part series on a streaming platform. As a standalone feature film, it had me on the edge of my seat.
Trine Dyrholm gives a terrific performance in the sophisticated and sexually candid style that she does so well. Dyrholm is Anne, an accomplished lawyer who is currently acting for the victim in a rape case; she is impeccably liberal and enlightened in the matter of sexual politics. Anne is married to a doctor, Peter (Magnus Krepper), and they have two charming twin girls, but their picture-perfect life has something emotionally stagnant in it.

Director May el-Toukhy tackles a subject that has not yet been explored and is frightening in the possibilities it reveals to us as women assume positions of power and authority. The troublesome specter of exploitive female sexuality is also elaborated upon in the Dutch Oscar submission, ‘Instinct’.
Two highly developed Western European nations, Denmark and The Netherlands, take female sexuality to extremes here in ways we only saw before as men’s terrain with such films as Last Tango in Paris or In the Realm of the Senses.
My initial reaction to both films was a sort of shame, as if somewhere deep inside of me, I understood the impulse that impelled both these women to venture into forbidden zones of action, but wished it had not depicted it so graphically. It would take a psychiatrist to explain the impulse in human nature that makes us enter dangerous sexual territories.

The Danish psychological thriller “Queen of Hearts” — a Sundance award-winner, and Denmark’s Oscar submission — is an unpleasant, empty-headed morality play centered on incest, sexual trauma, and ethical double standards.
Director May el-Toukhy and her co-writer Maren Louise Kaehne try to bait viewers with a plot that initially feels like an artier Skinemax erotic thriller — tough-but-fair defense attorney Anne (Trine Dyrholm) has an affair with her angsty teenage step-son Gustav (Gustav Lindh) — but the filmmakers rarely consider their subjects’ emotions or backgrounds beyond a very finite point.
The film’s toothless consideration of Anne’s personal crisis is illustrated by the scene where she acts out by drinking too many Aperol cocktails and interrupting an equally boring dinner party by queuing up and drunkenly dancing alone to “Tainted Love.” If this scene is supposed to be mordantly funny, it doesn’t really show.

When it comes to sex, things can get real complicated real fast. While the act itself may be dictated by the most primal of instincts, questions of morality, legality, gender, power, not to mention that funny little thing called feelings often ensure that no bodily liquids are exchanged without consequences.
In Danish writer/director May el-Toukhy’s gripping, thought-provoking erotic drama Queen of Hearts, problematic sex happens at an unlikely place. Middle-aged Anne (the ever-remarkable Nordic screen goddess Trine Dyrholm) is an intelligent, compassionate, happily married attorney who specializes in sexual abuse cases. She stands up for young, traumatized girls and defies professional rules of conduct to confront their predators in private. Not only revered by her peers, she’s actually loved by her clients. “Sometimes what happens and what must never happen are the same thing,” says Anne, a successful lawyer given to flouting expected codes of conduct, midway through “Queen of Hearts.” As excuses for an offense go, it’s on the slender side — a slightly more formal version of “the heart wants what it wants” — but Danish director May el-Toukhy’s sleek, engrossing melodrama isn’t liable to interrogate its characters. “What must never happen” makes for a better story, after all, and her film leads its characters into that territory with a detachment as cool as its polished Scandi interiors. The heat comes from viewers’ own emotional response to its doozy of a central transgression, as middle-aged, comfortably married Anne (Trine Dyrholm) initiates a reckless sexual affair with her troubled teenage stepson Gustav (Gustav Lindh): The premise’s “what?!” factor is so luridly high that the “why?!” one gets pushed to the background.

"Sometimes what happens and what must never happen are the same thing." This is going to get people talking. The first official trailer has debuted for a Danish film titled Queen of Hearts, which is premiering at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival starting this week. This erotic, intuitive drama is about a woman who jeopardizes both her career and her family when she seduces her teenage stepson and is forced to make an irreversible decision with fatal consequences. Iconic Danish actress Trine Dyrholm stars as Anne, with a cast including Magnus Krepper, Gustav Lindh, Frederikke Dahl Hansen, Diem Camille Gbogou, Mads Wille, Preben Kristensen, and Peter Khouri. I've already heart great things about this, and from the looks of it here, it's a very smart, subversive, complex film that's going to turn some heads. Take a look. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for May el-Toukhy's Queen of Hearts, direct...

"What happens next in the story?" Music Box Films has debuted the official Us trailer for a Swedish-Danish drama titled Becoming Astrid, which first premiered at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year. The film tells the story of Swedish writer Astrid Lindgren (author of the world famous Pippi Longstocking series), who grew up in a small town, started working for the local newspaper there, fell in love with the much older editor of that newspaper, gets pregnant with him, and decides to leave him to raise the child on her own. This actually is the true story of Astrid, the film tells it with a great amount of elegance and sensitivity. Alba August stars as Astrid and she's easily the best part of this. The cast includes Björn Gustafsson, Trine Dyrholm, Maria Bonnevie, Magnus Krepper, and Henrik Rafaelsen. I first saw this at Berlinale and it's quite a good...
