Endemol Studios, Endemol North America’s scripted studio operation based in Los Angeles, has signed its first pod deal, bringing in Christina Wayne and her Assembly Entertainment shingle to develop and produce scripted projects for cable and other TV distribution platforms. “Christina’s taste in material, her relationships with top talent and her experience as a writer, director, producer and as a network and studio executive will be incredibly valuable as we expand our development slate,” said Endemol Studios CEO Philippe Maigret. Former AMC senior development executive Wayne most recently served as president of Cineflix Studios, Cineflix’s scripted television arm, since its 2010 launch, but the division was recently dissolved after the cancellation of its BBC America drama Copper as the unscripted producer decided to retreat from scripted series. Under Wayne’s deal with Endemol Studios, she will develop existing and new projects, including Mdx, an international medical disaster drama...

On this week's episode of "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills," Kim Richards brings in a dog trainer to help her get her pit bull Kingsley under control.
The ensuing segment set off the ire of many pet-loving viewers, who took to the show's website and Facebook page to express their outrage.
"My dog has eaten thousands of dollars of shoes, sunglasses and personal items," Kim says. "And I just think we need a trainer."
But a trainer who kicks your dog and causes him to shake, Kim?
"Real Housewives" fans left comments on Facebook calling the trainer, David Utter, an "idiot," and a "bully." Viewers say the training segment was "disgusting" and left one fan sick to her stomach. Some characterized the situation that played out on-screen as "animal abuse" and insist the show should be held responsible.

Exclusive: Four years after he left TV producing to focus on feature directing, former Imagine TV topper Tony Krantz re-entered TV last summer. In his first year back, he landed a series on the air, NBC’s upcoming Dracula starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers, and a pilot order at ABC for Scruples. Now Krantz has set up six more series projects at cable and broadcast networks through his independent production company Flame Ventures. All are executive produced by him, with Flame’s Reece Pearson co-executive producing. At NBC, Flame is finalizing a deal for Cuba, a drama written by Jorge Zamacona (Homicide) and executive produced by CNN anchor Fareed Zakaria and former CNN President Jonathan Klein. The project, which will be produced by Universal TV, tells the story of American and Cuban families at the dawn of post-Castro Cuba with an entire nation up for grabs. At Showtime, Krantz is in negotiations for Kings Of Midnight,...

Exclusive: Four years after Tony Krantz left his TV producing career to focus on feature directing, he is mounting a big push in television with 8 projects set up at various broadcast networks, including a Scruples adaptation at ABC, which he is executive producing with Natalie Portman; a drama set in the New York restaurant world executive produced by chef/restaurateur Mario Batali; and an action drama about a foreign correspondent executive produced by former CNN president Jonathan Klein. The ramped-up small-screen development does not mean a return to TV full-time for Krantz, who helmed 3 features in the past 4 years, including most recently The Big Bang, and has 3 other potential film directing vehicles in the works. Krantz, who was head of primetime packaging at CAA and CEO of Imagine Television before he embarked on a feature directing career, started building his Flame Ventures into an independent TV production company last year when it sold 5 broadcast projects.

It's not as bad as having to resign in disgrace as New York's governor after a sex scandal. But Eliot Spitzer still has to look for a new gig now that CNN says his low-rated weeknight talk show In The Arena didn't make the network's new line-up that will debut Aug. 8. He'll be replaced at 8:00 Pm Et by Anderson Cooper's AC360, which will re-air at 10:00. That show will be preceded at 7:00 by an unnamed general news show hosted by former CNBC anchor Erin Burnett. And Piers Morgan Tonight will remain at 9:00. Ken Jautz, Evp of CNN/U.S. says that the network is "in discussions with Eliot Spitzer about an alternative role. We thank him and the entire In the Arena team for creating a program that moved many political and economic issues into the national spotlight.” Spitzer adds in a statement that his show...

Today CNN announced the departure of CNN/U.S. president Jonathan Klein. “Our colleague Jon Klein is leaving CNN. Jon’s six years as head of CNN/U.S. are reflected in the quality of our coverage of signal news events during his tenure,” CNN Worldwide president Jim Walton told employees in an e-mail. The Associated Press has characterized Klein’s exit as a firing, and The New York Times adds that Klein did not come into work today. (On the bright side, three-day weekend.) “The CNN I’m leaving today is demonstrably stronger than the one I inherited almost six years ago—both editorially and financially,” Klein said this morning.

CNN is a ratings mess right now, and the cable news channel is bringing in the guy who talent-scouted Glenn Beck, Nancy Grace, and Joy Behar to fix it. It's getting its clocked cleaned by Fox News, and Tptb finally are doing something about it. But is it too late? CNN today announced that 6-year president Jonathan Klein is being replaced by sister channel Hln's Ken Jautz, who now becomes the Evp of CNN/U.S. At one time known as Headline News, Hln is now the scandal channel -- and ratings have surged. What this portends for bland and boring CNN I don't even wanna predict. Chief marketer Scot Safon will take over Hln.

Piers Morgan, finally confirmed Wednesday as veteran talk show host Larry King's replacement, spoke to THR after last month's Emmys and again Wednesday morning, along with CNN president Jonathan Klein. What should viewers expect from the new primetime show, to kick off this January? Morgan wants to get CNN back to No. 1 in the ratings without being an opinionated pundit like Glenn Beck or Bill O'Reilly. He also has a few ideas for his first guests. Read more on Hibberd's Live Feed blog.
THR: You have a tougher interviewing reputation than Larry King. Do you plan to bring that to CNN?
Morgan: I've always disputed that Larry is in any way a softball interviewer. In his very stylish crafty way, he's always been brilliant at getting stuff out of people, so I've always admired him hugely. Although I'm a different kind of interviewer, we share the same thing -- a fascination about people,...

CNN has made it official: Reality TV personality Piers Morgan will replace Larry King.
The network will launch a primetime interview program in January hosted by the "America's Got Talent" judge.
The British-born Morgan has long had a journalism career in the U.K. as a newspaper editor at the Daily Mirror and host of the program "Piers Morgan's Life Stories." CNN struck a deal with NBC that will allow Morgan to continue his work on "Got Talent." He's also expected to continue hosting "Life Stories."
Sources say Morgan's shift in the U.S. from reality talent to replacing the veteran interviewer started more than a year ago, with Morgan meeting with former NBC co-chair Ben Silverman about the possibility of doing primetime interview shows.
In January, Morgan's agent John Ferriter at Octagon Entertainment approached CNN about the idea of Morgan doing an interview show on the network.

Today CNN announced that it has selected Piers Morgan to replace Larry King as host of Larry King Live, the name of which it will presumably change. Congratulations, Piers Morgan! “We are delighted that he will now bring his dynamic, probing interview style to American television and to CNN viewers around the globe,” said CNN/U.S. president Jonathan Klein. Yanks will likely know Morgan from his participation on Celebrity Apprentice and America’s Got Talent, but across the Atlantic, the British gossip fixture has acquired a more controversial standing. Morgan is something of the rowdy, misbehaving second cousin to King’s affable, earnest grandfather. What follows is a cheat sheet to the many scandals of Piers Morgan. Cut it out and carry it in your wallet to stay informed and well spoken at the watercooler.

Piers Morgan will take over for Larry King beginning in January, CNN announced Wednesday. Morgan will host a new interview show weekdays at 9/8c for the network and write a weekly column for CNN.com. After negotiations between NBC and CNN, he'll also retain his seat on the judges' panel of America's Got Talent (TV) and is expected to keep hosting Britain's Piers Morgan's Life Stories. "[Morgan] is able to look at all aspects of the news with style and humor with an occasional good laugh in the process," CNN president Jonathan Klein said in a statement. King announced in June that he'd be stepping down from his 25-year-old program Larry King Live (TV). Klein said that King's last day on the show will be Dec. 16. He will continue to host occasional specials for the network.

New York -- CNN is more concerned about competition from social networks than other cable news networks, CNN U.S. president Jonathan Klein said here Wednesday.
"The competition I'm really afraid of are social networking sites," he said in a keynote interview at Bloomberg BusinessWeek's Media Summit New York. They provide "an alternative that threatens to pull people away from us."
After all, Facebook friends and Twitter members are "trusted news sources," Klein explained. "That's a challenge, and we got to rise to that challenge."
CNN is looking to be a key place people link to online as a result, he said in explaining one strategy to deal with that challenge.
Asked whether it bothers him that CNN came in third in U.S. ratings last year, Klein said those rankings are based on primetime figures, but he likes to take a broader view across day parts. For example, he...

New York -- As 2009 dawns, the cable news channels can look back on one heckuva year in the ratings.
Fox News Channel continued its dominance, taking the year in viewership and in the adults 25-54 demographic in primetime and total day for a seventh consecutive year. CNN logged the best year in its 28-year history in viewership and adults 25-54, as did Hln, the onetime Headline News. MSNBC gained momentum and had its best year ever.
The cable nets can thank the closely watched presidential election campaign, which began in earnest the first two weeks of January with the Iowa caucus and the New Hampshire primary and never stopped, with a close Democratic primary race and strong ratings for the conventions and debates.
Cable took the largest share of the news-viewing pie that it has ever gotten. Fox News and CNN continually broke records, with CNN garnering 13.3 million viewers for Election Night,...

New York -- MSNBC has throttled into second place in three hours of cable news primetime, beating CNN for the month of October.
Fox News, as usual, retains the top slot and is in no danger of relinquishing it. But MSNBC turned in its best primetime performance in its 12-year history in the adults 25-54 demo, according to Nielsen Media Research. It surpassed CNN for second place between 7-10 p.m. with "Hardball," "Countdown With Keith Olbermann" and "The Rachel Maddow Show."
MSNBC Gm Phil Griffin said Monday that it's a historic placement for the network and part of MSNBC's long-term strategy when it set out on this course two years ago.

Tuesday night's town-hall-style joust between John McCain and Barack Obama resonated with viewers who made it the most-watched presidential debate since 1992.
The 90-minute showdown averaged 63.2 million viewers across all the networks, Nielsen Media Research said late Wednesday. That's 21% higher than the first debate two weeks ago (52.4 million). But it couldn't hold a ratings candle to the Sarah Palin/Joe Biden vp debate last week, which averaged 70 million viewers.
This debate was nothing but a win for ABC News and CNN as ABC News won its third straight debate in the ratings, while CNN was the top network among the cable news channels. ABC News averaged 13.1 million viewers, compared with NBC's 10.9 million, CBS' 9.4 million and Fox Broadcasting's 5.3 million.
CNN had 9.2 million viewers, compared with Fox News' 8.8 million, MSNBC's 3.8 million and CNBC's 842,000.
ABC News president David Westin said late Wednesday that it was gratifying and a testament to the work of the on-air and behind-the-scenes staff.

New York -- With the record-setting vp debate now history, it's back to the top of the ticket on Tuesday night.
John McCain and Barack Obama square off in a town-hall-style debate moderated by NBC's Tom Brokaw at Belmont University in Nashville. It's the second of three debates between the candidates, with the last one scheduled for Oct. 15 at Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y.
