A farmer, he got his first book published at the age of 57.
He was awarded an OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2010 New Year's Honours List for his services to literature.
He is survived by his second wife, Zona; three children, and 14 grandchildren.
He was a prolific writer, with more than 100 books since 1978.
He fought with the Grenadier Guards in Italy during WWII.
The illustrator of his Sheep-pig book was Mary Rayner.
