The source of this week’s other televised literary adaptation can’t claim the same global reach as “The Lord of the Rings,” but Sally Andrew’s Tannie Maria novels have proven reliable bestsellers in the author’s native South Africa since their 2015 debut. They now provide the basis of “Recipes for Love and Murder,” a South African-Scottish co-production that represents the daffiest addition yet to Acorn TV’s burgeoning portfolio of genial timepassers.
To some degree, this is formula fare with a capital F: mild comic, romantic and criminal misadventures in a picturesque setting. Watch enough of it, and you realize even individual scenes have their own formula. Find a cosy location, add light seasonings of plot and piano, and – lest anybody still feel too challenged – serve with a cutesy punchline, typically someone offering to put a kettle on somewhere. From its foundations up, it’s tea-break television.

Here is a wrap-up of all the news you need to know from Tuesday, August 2, 2022.
FX's turn at the Television Critics Association paved the way for some announcements about new and returning series.
We already reported on the casting of Elisabeth Moss on The Veil.
We also learned that American Horror Story Season 11 will receive its premiere in fall 2022.
There had been some questions about whether the series would return this year, given the lack of updates.
However, we should expect more concrete details about the big season in the coming weeks, including casting details and a confirmed premiere date.
The last season featured two stories -- Red Tide and Death Valley.
The former won praise from longtime fans, but the latter struggled to find its footing.
Spinoff American Horror Stories currently airs Thursdays on FX on Hulu.
As someone critical of the first season, the second is a breath of fresh air.

Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom (12A)
(Justin Chadwick, 2013, UK/Sa) Idris Elba, Naomie Harris, Tony Kgoroge, Riaad Moosa, Jamie Bartlett. 146 mins
Prestige dramatisation finds little to add to a true story that's already inspirational enough, and has already been much retold, especially since Mandela's death. That leaves this as a slightly redundant exercise in biopic box-ticking and corner-cutting, puffed up with awards-friendly grandeur and less interested in the political questions than the personal heart-strings. Still, Elba conveys something of the man as well as the icon, and Harris is a spirited Winnie.
Last Vegas (12A)
(Jon Turtletaub, 2013, Us) Robert De Niro, Michael Douglas, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Kline. 105 mins
If that title and cast had you thinking "is this The Hangover for seniors?", you wouldn't be far off. It's another Las Vegas bachelor-party adventure, in which four decaying dudes cement their buddyhood and lose their dignity – often assisted by people a fraction of their age,...

Chicago – The memory of South Africa freedom fighter Nelson Mandela, who passed away on December 5th, is filled with deserved accolades and iconography. Director Justin Chadwick and actor Idris Elba brings the man to human life in the essential “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.”
Rating: 4.0/5.0
This is the story that seemed lost in the overindulgent focus on the death of Mandela, but not the life. He was a radical and a freedom fighter, and fought a virulent and jack-booted white power base. He was thrown into prison for 27 years, and sacrificed his life, family and freedom for the cause he believed in. Focusing on that in the media after Mandela’s demise was impossible, they wanted the grandfatherly man who lived to the ripe old age of 95. “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom” reinstates the rabble rouser, the intellect and the social theorist who affected the 20th Century as much as any other man.

Chicago – When South African freedom fighter Nelson Mandela died on December 5th, there was a sense in the media that yes, he was a “great man,” but how he affected social change seemed lost in platitudes. Director Justin Chadwick fills in those gaps in his film adaptation of “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.”
Chadwick, and Mandela’s daughters, were at the London premiere of the film when they got the word that the great man had passed. There was speculation with the production company and distributor that the film release might be rescheduled. As Chadwick describes below, it was the children of Nelson Mandela that insisted that the film debut should go on, because of the stellar portrayal of Mandela – by actor Idris Elba – and the precise storytelling of his life by Justin Chadwick.

It’s still very much early days yet, but there’s every reason to expect Idris Elba’s leading performance in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom to push both the film and himself straight towards the Oscars, the BAFTAs, and all the leading awards ceremonies in the coming months.
The first teaser trailer that launched last week set the tone nicely for the film, without really showing us anything from it. And now The Weinstein Company have launched the first theatrical trailer, via Yahoo Movies, which gives us a much better look, strengthening the suggestion that is bound for the Oscars.

Last week, he cancelled the apocalypse. This week, Idris Elba plans to liberate a nation. In the first full-length trailer for Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom, the actor takes on a far more challenging role than defeating aliens. Now he embodies one of the great modern day icons of peace.
Elba takes on the part of Nelson Mandela in what looks like a fairly straight forward biopic of the South African president. The film follows Mandela from his rural childhood through the struggle against apartheid, imprisonment and his rise to become South Africa’s first black president in a multi-racial, fair election. The film is based on Mandela’s book Long Walk To Freedom.
The trailer gives a fairly basic overview of the film, including the struggles against apartheid and the centrepiece of Mandela’s imprisonment. It’s a harrowing but inspiring story, made all the more poignant when we...

It usually takes more than a week for a full-on trailer to follow up a film's teaser vid, but since yesterday was the 95th birthday of the unconquerable Nelson Mandela himself, The Weinstein Company decided to make an exception. And what a celebration it was.
In the biopic, Idris Elba stars as Nelson Mandela, the South African revolutionary who stood up against an oppressive, divisive government and spent 27 years in prison before being released and later chosen as the nation's first democratically-elected president.
Whereas the teaser for "Mandela" was decidedly optimistic and sort of all's-well-that-ends-well-ish with him romping around a meadow with happy children, this trailer for the Justin Chadwick-directed pic is much grittier and more consequential in nature.
Based on Mandela's own written autobiography of the same name, the film chronicles the Nobel Peace Prize winner's journey from a young village boy onto becoming one of the world's most revered leaders.

There’s only one shot in the teaser trailer for Justin Chadwick‘s Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, but man is it a good one. The trailer sees Nelson Mandela, the Noble Peace Prize winner and former President of South Africa, trudging along a narrow path in a vast, rust-colored plain. The camera starts to swoop and soar, and soon children flock to Mandela, turning his lonely walk into a joyous one. Throughout all this, Idris Elba (who will be playing Mandela) does a little narration to flex his South African accent. As all those elements come together, this teaser trailer hits a well of real emotion- especially so with Mandela still in the hospital and said to be in critical condition. Think a kind thought for him and check out the trailer below: Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom is based on Mandela’s autobiography of the same name, and stars Elba as well as Naomie Harris and...

This couldn't come at a more bittersweet moment: Just a few weeks after Nelson Mandela was hospitalized in Pretoria, the first teaser trailer has debuted for the upcoming biographical film about the South African luminary, "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom." And even with very little actual footage shown, the movie looks stirring and inspirational.
The trailer starts off with text ("It only takes one man to change the world"), followed by a panoramic shot of Mandela, played by "Pacific Rims"'s Idris Elba, walking along a field, followed by small children.
As the moment plays out, Elba-as-Mandela narrates, "I have walked a long walk to freedom. It has been a long road and it is not over yet. No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin. People learn to hate; they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart.

Justin Chadwick’s biopic, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, is all but guaranteed to be a strong contender at the Oscars this year, particularly with the muscle of The Weinstein Company behind it and a late November Us release date set.
The film sees Idris Elba take the titular role as the world-renowned South African politician, who served as President from 1994 to 1999, and who was the first black South African to hold the position. And with a little over half a year before the film arrives in theatres, the first poster has been released online, with Elba front and centre.
