One of the most iconic shows of the late-’70s and ’80s, Dallas was Friday night’s must-see TV. The CBS series told the saga of two oil families, the wealthy Ewing family and the struggling Barnes family. The March 1980 cliffhanger episode, “Who Shot J.R.?,” took the U.S. by storm, with buzz building about the mystery throughout the summer and fall. When Dallas returned on November 21, 1980, 350 million people tuned in to find out who had shot J.R.
Since the 14-season drama ended, Dallas fans have fondly recalled the cast members. So, which ones are still alive?
Who were the main cast members of ‘Dallas’?
Prominent Dallas characters include Ellie and Jock, the matriarch and patriarch of the Ewing family. Scheming J.R. Ewing is their eldest son, and hard-drinking, long-suffering Sue Ellen is his wife.
Moral, handsome Bobby is J.R.’s younger brother and is married to the beautiful Pamela Barnes.

Even though she wasn’t billed as one of the show’s original six stars, Linda Gray was on the set of Dallas from the very first day of shooting. And she stayed there for 12 of the show’s 14 seasons — her 308 episodes rank her behind only Larry Hagman (all 357 episodes), Patrick Duffy (325), and Ken Kercheval (324) and make her the actress with the most appearances on the show. Looking back on the show after it was over, Gray spoke to us about what it was like to play such a memorable and juicy role, and how she helped make the character into one worth watching carefully. Dallas, with its portrayals of Western wealth, success and power; may have played a role in the collapse of the Soviet Union, former leader Mikhail Gorbachev believes.
Eurythmics musician David Stewart said during an interview on Joss Stone’s A Cuppa Happy podcast that Gorbachev’s theory centered the CBS family drama series, which ran from 1978 to 1991. The musician said Gorbachev told him the show starring Larry Hagman, Ken Kercheval and Linda Gray, gave former Soviet Union residents ideas about living in the United States.
“He said that had more effect, that half-hour or whatever it was, than anything else,” Stewart said recalling an old conversation with the Soviet leader.
Stewart said the American show had made its way to Russian broadcasts after someone had brought in a VHS. The sneaky broadcasting of the Golden Globe-winning show came after Soviet Union citizens would try to destroy signal blockers in churches to listen to music,...

Actor Ken Kercheval, best known as Texas businessman Cliff Barnes on the CBS series Dallas, has died. A cause of death is not known, but a spokesperson at the Frist Funeral Home in the actor’s hometown of Clinton, Indiana, told Deadline that Kercheval died Sunday. He was 83.
Kercheval’s character was a signature presence on Dallas — along with his bitter rival J.R. Ewing (Larry Hagman), Barnes was the only character to appear in all 14 seasons (1978-1991) of the soapy saga about Texas crude and crude Texans. The character was originally modeled on Robert F. Kennedy but that template didn’t hold for long. Instead Barnes was defined by his family’s rivalry with the Ewings and his character was spun in varied directions as needed — his job title, for instance, changed a dozen times over the course of the series.
Kercheval was also in the 1986 prequel Dallas: The Early Years, a TV movie that fleshed out the franchise’s central conflict, the rivalry between the two oil industry families. Kercheval also returned to the character for the 1996 television movie Dallas: J.R. Returns and then again for three seasons (2012-2014) of a Dallas revival, which presented the career-bouncing Barnes as a casino industry player.
Dallas also gave Kercheval a chance to experiment with job directions himself: He went behind the camera to direct an episode of the series in each of its final two seasons.
Kercheval was born July 15, 1935, in Wolcottville, Ind., and raised in nearby Clinton. A music and drama major at Indiana University he later studied at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York. Kercheval began his professional acting career on the stage, making his Broadway debut in the 1962 play Something About A Soldier. He went on to appear Off-Broadway in 1972’s Berlin to Broadway with Kurt Weill revue. His other theatre credits include The Apple Tree, Cabaret (replacing Bert Convy as Cliff), and Here’s Where I Belong. He also appeared as the title character in the original Broadway production of Fiddler on the Roof, co-starring with Herschel Bernardi, Maria Karnilova, Julia Migenes, Leonard Frey, and Pia Zadora.
It was television, however, where Kercheval became a face familiar to millions. His credits included appearances on E.R., L.A. Law,, Murder She Wrote, CHiPs, Highway to Heaven, Kojak, The Love Boat, Matlock, and Starsky & Hutch. His film credits include Network, The Seven-Ups and F.I.S.T. in the 1970s.

Thanks to The Omen (1976) and little Damien’s watchdog, Hollywood figured they could mine some horror from our canine friends, on the assumption that there’s something inherently evil to exploit. Except…they’re not. Are they sometimes vicious? Definitely. But I would hardly call dogs evil, especially ones allegedly in favor with Satan. Which brings us to todays’ Tube, as TV naturally had to take a shot at demonizing our four legged friends, a task at which Devil Dog: The Hound of Hell (1978) fails spectacularly. It is however, a blast and more fun than a bowl full of kibble.
Originally airing on Halloween night of 1978 on CBS, Devil Dog was up against Linda Blair and her demonic cousin in Summer of Fear over on NBC, a true dilemma for horror fans as both satisfy in different ways. But since I’ve already covered that Wes Craven helmed Ya adaptation...

Psycho launched a thousand twisted sickos and pathological relationships in films, but none can best Noel Black’s fascinating, funny romance between a newly-released arsonist and a fetching high schooler, hungry for freedom and lacking a moral compass. Even people who never watched the original run of Dallas probably know that one of the series' major plotlines can be summed up in three simple words: "Who shot J.R.?" In the final moments of the show's third season finale, J.R. Ewing (Larry Hagman), the show's scheming villain but also arguably its central character, was seen getting shot by an offscreen assailant.
Fans had to wait until the fourth season premiere to find out if J.R. had even survived. What some might not remember – and what was key to the "Who shot J.R.?" mystery becoming a...

Glenda Jackson: Actress and former Labour MP. Two-time Oscar winner and former Labour MP Glenda Jackson returns to acting Two-time Best Actress Academy Award winner Glenda Jackson set aside her acting career after becoming a Labour Party MP in 1992. Four years ago, Jackson, who represented the Greater London constituency of Hampstead and Highgate, announced that she would stand down the 2015 general election – which, somewhat controversially, was won by right-wing prime minister David Cameron's Conservative party.[1] The silver lining: following a two-decade-plus break, Glenda Jackson is returning to acting. Now, Jackson isn't – for the time being – returning to acting in front of the camera. The 79-year-old is to be featured in the Radio 4 series Emile Zola: Blood, Sex and Money, described on their website as a “mash-up” adaptation of 20 Emile Zola novels collectively known as "Les Rougon-Macquart."[2] Part 1 of the three-part Radio 4 series will be broadcast daily during an...

The honeymoon has ended for John Ross, in more ways than one.
"D.T.R.," Monday's (March 24) episode of TNT's "Dallas," opened with the newlywed Ewing (Josh Henderson) landing back home with wife Pamela (Julie Gionzalo). They immediately turned their thoughts back to business, with her wondering how his deal to acquire desired ships was going. His stalling on the answer led her to suggest she'd ask Emma (Emma Bell), but he coaxed her out of it as they got frisky in the back of their limo.
Upon returning to Southfork, John Ross checked on the temporarily stalled drilling, then threatened foreman Bo (Donny Boaz) with bringing in a replacement crew if the workers couldn't get back to business that night. The scheming is reaching a fever pitch at and around Southfork Ranch.
Bountiful proof was supplied by Monday's (March 10) episode of TNT's "Dallas," "Playing Chicken." After their meeting at which Harris Ryland (Mitch Pileggi) was revealed to be working secretly with the CIA, Ann (Brenda Strong) told Bobby (Patrick Duffy) she feared for Emma's (Emma Bell) safety. He promised that the women would "always be safe on Southfork. You can count on that."
Others might not be, though: Greed-accusing graffiti indicated an uprising by workers on the ranch over the planned fracking of the land by John Ross (Josh Henderson), who was drawn into a fight by foreman Bo (Donny Boaz). Bobby broke it up by declaring, "Southfork is a cattle ranch, not an oil field, and I intend to keep it that way. Nobody is losing their jobs."

In real time, new "Dallas" episodes left off 10 months ago. In Southfork time, it's only been 12 hours.
That was explained in the opening scene of 'The Return," Monday's (Feb. 24) Season 3 premiere of the TNT series, as Bobby Ewing (Patrick Duffy) visited his family's burial plot. "I'm the only one left," he said at the gravesites of brother J.R. and their parents, Jock and Miss Ellie. "I'll try not to disappoint you."
J.R.'s son, newlywed John Ross (Josh Henderson), was geting on with business in his own way by continuing his extramarital dallying with Emma (Emma Bell), who had the power to make decisions for her father Harris Ryland's (Mitch Pileggi) company while he was in prison -- an incarceration she engineered.
Later, John Ross' wife Pamela (Julie Gonzalo) met him outside Southfork, where he wanted to make good on their elopement by placing on her finger "the biggest diamond in Texas.

"Dallas" is starting its new season in a way it never has before, in either its initial or current versions ... without J.R. Ewing.
The iconic character's death echoed the passing of his portrayer, Larry Hagman, but both their shadows continued to loom large over the rest of Season 2 of the TNT reboot. The legacy of J.R. remains a big factor as the third season starts Monday, Feb. 24, even as others try to fill his shoes and new characters pose fresh complications for the residents of Southfork Ranch. And their allies. And their enemies.
As Hagman did, Patrick Duffy and Linda Gray -- who also starred in the 1978-91 CBS incarnation -- remain pivotal to "Dallas" as J.R.'s brother Bobby and ex-wife Sue Ellen. The saga picks up 12 hours after it left off, so Duffy feels it's appropriate for J.R. still to be invoked from the get-go,...

Dallas probably sounded like a strange idea when reworking the classic first hit you, but there’s no denying that the show has found an audience, and with the third season set to hit on February 24th, TNT wants to prepare you with not only a 25-Hour marathon of the earlier episodes, but also with some interesting key art and promo spots.
I’ll have a detailed preview for you soon, with some info on what to expect with the new season and preview reviews, but for now, take a look at what TNT has for you as far as quick teases. In case you were wondering why you like it (or why you should watch it)… it’s because there are hot people on it, and if that isn’t enough, they aren’t above sexual innuendo. So… you should watch.

A bit later than anticipated, "Dallas" still will restart all the usual drama at Southfork reasonably early in the new year.
Season 3 of the TNT reboot will begin Monday, Feb. 24 -- marking the first time in the history of the franchise, including the original 1978-91 CBS run -- that a year of the serial will begin without J.R. Ewing present as a major character. He died last season ... as did his portrayer, Larry Hagman, a year ago while those episodes were in production.
That doesn't mean there still isn't enough scheming to go around, though. The sons of J.R. and Bobby (Patrick Duffy), John Ross (Josh Henderson) and Christopher (Jesse Metcalfe), remain at odds with each other -- reinforced by their romances with the woman who's now an ex of both of them, Elena (Jordana Brewster).

Season 2 of "Dallas" ended with the revelation of J.R. Ewing's master plan, and a couple of twists that set up a possible third season.
That possibility is now a reality, as TNT says it has ordered a third season of the show. As with Season 2, Season 3 will run for 15 episodes. It's set to premiere in early 2014.

But who really killed J.R.? That’s for Bobby to know, and for us to find out — eventually.
“I know it’s hard to accept, but J.R. Ewing is dead.” Those chilling words — spoken by some rando Mexican policewoman — set the stage for a truly depressing episode of Dallas, as the associates of Southfork, and the viewers who have been following J.R. (Larry Hagman) for more than 30 years, laid the TV icon to rest.
Even the opening title sequence was altered into a tribute to the late-great villain, with a down-tempo theme song and various glamour shots of J.R. His funeral also brought some of Southfork’s finest back to the ranch — including J.R.’s multiple ex-wives — to reminisce about the horrific good times.
J.R.’s Memorial Ends In A Fistfight

New York — Who killed J.R.?
That's the mystery propelling "Dallas" through the rest of its second season as a TNT revival.
And that question hangs heavy in the upcoming episode (airing Monday at 9 p.m. Edt), which confirms the sad truth every viewer knew was coming: glorious scoundrel J.R. Ewing has died, after decades of living-on-the-edge infamy dating back at least to 1980, when he was gunned down in his office and left for dead, with "Who shot J.R.?" the question on every viewer's lips for months afterward.
J.R.'s fate was sealed this time by the intrusion of reality. In November, Larry Hagman died of cancer at 81. And when he died, he took J.R. with him.
So the new episode – surely the first without Hagman's deliciously vile presence – stands as a fitting tribute both to him and to J.R., complete with a wake and...

The March 11 episode of TNT’s Dallas features J.R. Ewing’s funeral, but tonight’s hour (9 p.m. Et) is, according to the network’s promo, “the end of J.R. Ewing.” Haven’t been watching the reboot’s second season but want to take part in this pop culture moment? Here’s a quick primer:
1. While season 1 of TNT’s Dallas was about J.R. (Larry Hagman) and his son John Ross (Josh Henderson) scheming to steal Southfork from Bobby (Patrick Duffy), whose name is still on the deed, season 2 has revolved around John Ross and J.R.

Even if it didn't have to deal with a pivotal death, there would be much new in Season 2 of "Dallas."
TNT's reboot of the 1978-91 CBS serial resumes Monday, Jan. 28, with the ever-wily J.R. Ewing still present. Larry Hagman had completed five of the new episodes at the time of his death in November, and by necessity as well as the desire to give the actor and character a fitting send-off, the show will focus on J.R.'s sudden absence in an episode tentatively slated for Monday, March 11.
"Every episode will have it," executive producer Cynthia Cidre tells Zap2it of "Dallas" retaining the spirit of J.R. once he departs. "And also [Ewing family patriarch] Jock's. He died in the third season [of the original series], and his presence has been felt forever. I think J.R. will always be with the show, but for this season at a minimum, it's the mystery of what's happened to him.

Hold on tight! Dallas is back tonight!
(l-r, Jordana Brewster, Jesse Metcalfe, Patrick Duffy,
Josh Henderson & Larry Hagman)
It’s in the first few moments of tonight’s second season premiere of Dallas that we see how John Ross (Josh Henderson) deals with his fiancée leaving him for his cousin, Christopher (Jesse Metcalfe): he picks up a random bride-to-be at a bachelorette party and gets her into bed. Of course, this being Dallas, nothing is that simple. The morning after reveals his true, dastardly motives.
(Oh, and you Jesse Metcalfe fans won't be deprived of eye candy. You'll see the buff actor frolicking in the Ewing swimming pool – the same pool, for those paying attention to the history of the series, where his biological mother, Kristen - you know, the one who infamously shot Jr - drowned years ago.)
That’s right, we’re back in the world of backstabbing,...

Two months after Larry Hagman's November 23 death, the Dallas cast past and present has assembled at the city's swanky Petroleum Club to shoot an epic, drama-filled memorial for his legendary J.R. Ewing. Among the mourners who have returned to pay their respects — or disrespects — are Cliff Barnes (Ken Kercheval), Gary and Lucy Ewing (Ted Shackelford and Charlene Tilton), Ray Krebbs (Steve Kanaly), Mandy Winger (Deborah Shelton) and Cally Harper Ewing (Cathy Podewell). On set, the late actor's spirit is still very much alive. Each morning when he passes Hagman's trailer, Patrick Duffy, who plays Bobby Ewing, knocks on his friend's door. "Not like I'm expecting him to say, 'Come in,'" Duffy says. "But just to say to Larry, 'I'm still here, pal.'" And if you believe some of Hagman's costars, he's been knocking right back.
