Megastar Amitabh Bachchan recalled playing a mayor in Russian playwright Nikolai Gogol’s ‘The Government Inspector’ in 1957, when he was studying in Sherwood College in Nainital.
The actor took to his blog and wrote: “How time has kept us all in tune and line… 1957 Sherwood, Nainital, School Play, Nikolai Gogol’s ‘The Government Inspector’, Danny Kaye the phenomenal talent, playing the Inspector… and I use it on stage in Milman Hall for the Annual Concert, where I play the Mayor.”
Big B shared an anecdote from the rehearsals of the play and mentioned that he had taken home the Best Actor’s trophy at that time.
“And during a rehearsal, classmate Chris Borthwick, who plays the Inspector, suggests the famous line to be spoken at a particular scene – impromptu… and the entire Hall comes down… It was the most popular song of the World… and gives me my best actor Cup – the Kendall Cup.

Hailing from an acting dynasty in Indian cinema, the Chandni star, who has died aged 67, played the sweet-natured eternal juvenile roles that stole the audience’s hearts
The story of Rishi Kapoor is a love story: he was loved as the chubby and cherubic child star who morphed into an irresistible, indefatigable romantic lead in dozens of comedies, dramas, musicals and thrillers. He famously fell in love with his leading lady Neetu Singh, married her, appeared in dozens more love stories with Neetu on the big screen – and the public fell in love with them both. Then, as the 21st century brought a career shift into twinkly-eyed avuncular character roles (and occasional bad guys) the public fell for him all over again. His loss is an awful blow so soon after Irrfan Khan’s death and also the loss in 2018 of Rishi’s frequent co-star Sridevi.

"If it gets too boring, I'll run away." Cohen Media Group has debuted an official trailer for the upcoming re-release of the classic romantic adventure Heat and Dust, directed by James Ivory, that was originally released in 1983. Set in India in the 1920s, the story looks back at the life of an English woman named Olivia who becomes fascinated by India and enamored by the local ruler, a nawab who combines British distinction with Indian pomp and ruthlessness. The film's international cast stars Greta Scacchi, Shashi Kapoor, Julie Christie, Christopher Cazenove, Julian Glover, Susan Fleetwood, Patrick Godfrey, and Jennifer Kendal. This is a brand new, 4K restoration meaning it will look and sound better than ever. I have not seen this film myself, but I have heard it's certainly worth watching. For now, check out the trailer. Here's the new re-release trailer (+ poster) for James Ivory's Heat and Dust,...

In the acutely thought-provoking Aligarh, which is about a homosexual man’s right to privacy, Manoj Bajpayee, playing the disgraced professor Srinivas Ramchandra Siras, sits alone in his dingy one-bedroom professor’s quarter, with a drink in hand and a Lata Mangeshkar song by his side.
In the semi-darkness, in a room lit by dim hope, Srinivas listens to the Melody Queen’s ‘Aap Ki Nazron Ne Samjha Pyaar Ke Qaabil Mujhe’, that timeless Madan Mohan composition from the film Anpadh. The song plays on a rickety portable sound machine. But its sound resonates across the professor’s silent universe, like a melodic meteor cutting through a sky of solitude.
It’s a life-defining moment. Director Hansal Mehta holds the unflinchingly intimate camera (Satya Nagpaul’s lensing is lucid, leisurely and lingering) with ruthless resilience on his protagonist Manoj Bajpai’s face. For a good 5-7 minutes we see Bajpai...

Indian indie favourite Aparna Sen’s new film about love through letters lacks style and diction.
The phonetic possibility of her surname Sen makes Indian indie filmmaker Aparna Sen’s films a fine fodder for all sorts of rhetorical puns in English, most obviously for a word, like say, sensational. But sadly her latest outing, “The Japanese Wife,” does not lend itself to the word because the film is anything but an Aparna Sen film. This also means that many of her previous films actually do lend themselves to hyperbole and it is incumbent to look closely at them individually, which, given her sparse filmography, is not a difficult task at hand. Only such a critique will best highlight why her latest is simply not up to the mark. Otherwise, the author remains a huge admirer of Sen’s abundant sensibility as a filmmaker, which makes her deserving of a seat among global auteurs,...

Mumbai, Sanjana Kapoor carries a big responsibility on her slender shoulders - running Prithvi Theatre in Mumbai, a family legacy she inherited from parents Shashi Kapoor and Jennifer Kendal. But she says she enjoys it thoroughly and is confident that theatre will outlive technology. "I'm surprised that most of the audience patronising the Prithvi Theatre Festival in three venues in the city comprise young people who are used to interacting with each other through SMSes, MMSes, e-mail and e-mail chats. So watching a live-action play is a revelation to them and therefore they are enjoying the experience. Mark my word, theatre will outlive technology," Sanjana told Ians. This year's ongoing festival, which began Nov 6, is in a way a tribute to master Hindi playwright ...
