Announcing the nominees for their 16th annual Ves Awards, the Visual Effects Society brought welcome news for Denis Villeneuve’s “Blade Runner 2049” and Matt Reeves’s “War for the Planet of the Apes,” each up for seven statuettes. “Despicable Me 3” is the most-nominated animated film of the year (5), while the most-honored title overall is “Game of Thrones” (11).
The 21-year-old organization consists of 3,400-plus members in 35 nations. Each year, it recognizes visual effects innovators in film, animation, television, commercials, and video games.
In 2017, Disney’s “The Jungle Book” remake claimed five Ves trophies, more than any other feature (nominations leader “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” was shutout). It’s director-producer, Jon Favreau, will receive this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award; Weta Digital director and four-time Oscar winner Joe Letteri will accept the Georges Méliès Award, named for the late French illusionist and filmmaker. As we all know, 3D is the Next Big Thing – and seemingly has been for a while. Whilst the third dimension has been implemented into our cinema screens with such enthusiasm over the last year or so as to quickly become something approaching the norm (especially for animated features), 3D in the home is another matter. The uptake on 3D capable televisions has been slow, but LG intend to change that with their new advertising campaign, which consists of an amusing, 3D commercial to be shown in cinemas and a complimentary interactive trouble-shooting video.
The commercial is produced by London-based and Oscar winning visual effects company Framestore and directed by Richard Ayoade of The It Crowd, Garth Merenghi’s Darkplace and The Mighty Boosh fame. It stars up and coming comedian and poet, Tim Key as an affable film director introducing the audience to the possibilities and accessibility of 3D in the home,...

This time last year, most of us had never heard of an exotic moon called Pandora, let alone glimpsed the peace-loving Na'vi people who live there.
Just months after its December release, those blue aliens won director James Cameron's Avatar three Oscars, and bumped his 1997 movie Titanic off the top spot as the highest-grossing film of all time, raking in an awe-inspiring $2.7 billion worldwide to date.
Combining live action and ground-breaking digital effects, the epic 155-minute film was ten years in the making and has turned 2010 into the year of the 3D movie, with studios keen to hang on to its coat-tails and get a slice of its otherworldly success.
While Avatar, a love story about a man who falls for a Na'vi and sides with her in a battle for a lucrative resource, certainly has its detractors, its impact on modern culture and the future of cinema cannot be denied.
