In Hulu’s Shardlake, as in Arthurian legend, a hand emerges from a body of water bearing a sword. Though lacking Excalibur’s magical touch, this blade’s discovery does serve the ambitions of a monarch. After splitting England from the Catholic Church in 1534, King Henry VIII and his chief minister, Thomas Cromwell (Sean Bean), have begun dissolving monasteries across the realm and seizing their wealth. The decapitation of Cromwell’s representative (Michael Rivers) at an abbey near the remote, boggy town of Scarnsea presents an opportunity to advance that crusade, with Cromwell sending an odd couple of agents to investigate the incident, commanding them to find sufficient reason to shutter the order.
In the third episode, the monks watch in horror as endearingly determined lawyer Matthew Shardlake (Arthur Hughes) and Jack Barak (Anthony Boyle), the cocksure enforcer assigned to accompany him, find the submerged murder weapon on their grounds.

Spoilt queen Aimee Lou Wood faces off against Nicola Coughlan’s humble upstart in a goofy adventure played for laughs
There’s a mega-helping of daftness, silliness and goofiness in this wacky British comedy of Ye Olden Medieval Dayes from screenwriter Andy Riley and director Curtis Vowell – and I have to say the them there troupe of Mat Baynton, Simon Farnaby et al have done this kind of thing a bit better with their Horrible Histories spin-off movies, but there are some laughs and likability here, due in some part to a great cast.
Aimee Lou Wood plays the grotesquely spoilt and entitled Queen Dagan, advised by slippery Machiavellian courtier Leofwine (Jessica Hynes). Faced by a Wat Tyler-ish uprising led by “Humble” Joan (Nicola Coughlan) – who demurely insists on being just called “Joan” – the Queen finds that her screeching commands to her guards to seize the intruders have no effect.

Steve Martin may be riding high on his success with comedy-crime series Only Murders in the Building but, in a new documentary, he reflects on some troughs in his long career as well as the many high points.
The comedian – who got his big break as a writer on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, became one of the all-time most popular hosts of Saturday Night Live and went on to huge success with movies including The Man with Two Brains, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Roxanne and LA Story – is the subject of the two-part documentary Steve! Hollywood actor and comedian Steve Martin shared that he was upset when he was ambushed on the red carpet by British comedian Paul Kaye as his alter-ego in 1996. The actor told the Guardian newspaper: “It hurt because I was at a very vulnerable moment in my career.”
It was later suggested that Martin cancelled the rest of his interviews for the film following the incident.
However, Martin insisted that it was not true.
Martin added: “Bad reviews hurt; they really hurt. But if I’m at a screening and I see the critic, I just go: ‘Hey! How you doing?’ Like you don’t know anything.”

There’s a great little turn by Paul Kaye at the start of Black Dog which sets the tone for what is to follow. He plays the owner of a small mechanic business, employing one of the film’s protagonists, wayward teenager Nathan (Jamie Flatters), and the combination of irritation and affection that he shows towards the boy provides an easy way in for the audience, encouraging us to invest. Kaye is also one of those actors who chooses roles carefully base on quality, so his presence is reassuring, hinting – correctly, as it turns out – at good things to come.
Nathan is one of those innately chaotic teenagers who never seems to slow down. He’s in the foster system, sleeping with his foster sister, and generally charging through life without a great deal of awareness of other people. Nevertheless, he’s capable of heroism, as we see when he intervenes to save.

It’s the battle of the TV Cromwells! On BBC One later this year, Mark Rylance returns in the role of Henry VIII’s right hand man in series two of Wolf Hall, adapted from Dame Hilary Mantel’s acclaimed novels. But before then, Sean Bean will play Thomas Cromwell in Disney+ British historical crime mystery Shardlake.

Thomas Cromwell is a supporting role in Shardlake, a new four-part series adapted from the first in C.J Sansom’s successful mystery novels about Matthew Shardlake, a 16th century lawyer born with what would now be understood as scoliosis, and who investigates murder mysteries for the Crown.
Working for Cromwell, Shardlake must navigate the dangers of his powerful boss...

"This is an inexplicable farce!" Saban Films + Paramount have revealed an official trailer for an adventure thriller titled Nandor Fodor and the Talking Mongoose, arriving in US theaters to watch starting this September. A (possibly?) true tale set in 1935 , Hungarian-American para-psychologist Nandor Fodor began his investigation of a strange occurrence on the Isle of Man. An average British family, the Irvings, claimed to have been contacted by a mysterious entity at their farm – a talking mongoose named Gef (pronounced "Jeff"). Huh, okay, this is peculiar... Simon Pegg stars as the titular Nandor Fodor, with a cast including Christopher Lloyd, Minnie Driver, Paul Kaye, Ruth Connell, Tim Downie, Gary Beadle, plus Edmund Kingsley as Houdini and Neil Gaiman as the voice of Gef. It seems like a clever parable about "faith" and religion, at least from what I can glean from this trailer. Are these people lying? Is there really a talking mongoose?...

In December 2022, the critically acclaimed, mega-successful stage musical based on Roald Dahl’s beloved children’s book Matilda came to cinemas translated into a punchy, inventive feature film. Written by playwright and screenwriter Dennis Kelly with songs and lyrics by comedian and writer Tim Minchin (Upright), the musical – like the book – is a terrific blend of poignancy and rebellious satire.
Famously adapted for a 1996 American feature film starring writer Mara Wilson in the title role, Matilda is the story of an extraordinary young girl born into a neglectful family who are unable to see, or appreciate her uniqueness. Matilda Wormwood isn’t just an academic genius, and when she goes up against the cruel, child-hating headmistress Miss Trunchbull, she uses her powers to right a generational wrong.
The new film retains the original musical’s anarchic heart, chiefly by retaining its director Matthew Warchus, who pulled the whole thing together...

So what can we expect from the upcoming episodes of Vera? More gruesome murders, of course, and more stunning Northumberland scenery, but there’s also going to be more...

Shudder and IFC Midnight are launching microbudget Skinamarink on a not-so-micro 629 screens, giving the viral horror pic a major push after a well-received premiere back at Fantasia-fest that just kept snowballing with strong reviews and social media love.
“I was over the moon. For a horror filmmaker in Canada, [Fantasia] is like getting a Cannes screening,” says first-time filmmaker Kyle Edward Ball about the leadup to this weekend’s buzzy specialty opening. He shot the 15k feature at his parents’ home in Edmonton, Canada.
In it, two children wake up in the middle of the night to find their father is missing and all the windows and doors in their home have vanished. “I’d had a nightmare when I was little. I was in my parents’ house, my parents were missing, and there was a monster. And lots of people have shared this exact same dream,” Ball tells Deadline.

This year is already off to an incredible start for the horror genre, with M3GAN scaring up big time profits in theaters and “The Last of Us” getting set to elevate horror television on HBO.
Much like last week, this second week of 2023 is similarly home to several exciting new horror releases, including the return of Kevin Williamson plus the arrival of a viral horror indie.
Not to mention, this Friday is the first Friday the 13th of 2023!
Here’s all the new horror releasing January 10 – January 13, 2023…
First up, from Ryûhei Kitamura, the director of Midnight Meat Train, comes Lionsgate’s The Price We Pay, which just debuted on VOD this Tuesday and comes to select theaters Friday.
Emile Hirsch (Into the Wild) and Stephen Dorff (Blade) star in The Price We Pay, which looks like a genre fusion of an action-thriller and a slasher movie all in one crazy package.

From the moment that God said to Abraham, “Kill me a son,” the idea of shedding one’s own blood in pursuit of spiritual cleansing never entirely left our collective subconscious. Dead children, hungry divinities, and humans asked to make impossible sacrifices are ideas that appear again and again in our best horror movies. So it’s only fitting that they’re finally being explored in a film about the original Abrahamic religion.
