Elvis has a lot of buzz this awards season, but Baz Luhrmann didn’t get the story right. The real Elvis Presley traded places with an impersonator in order to live a simple life as an impersonator himself before retiring to Mud Creek, Texas alongside John F. Kennedy, who was patched up and dyed Black after the assassination attempt.

The rage currently aimed at police violence and systemic racism is centuries in the making. And in order to understand and meaningfully contribute to the movement, non-Black audiences have become increasingly interested in educating themselves on the racist and socioeconomic inequities that nurture the environment that allows these injustices to thrive. "Tell him to get me my money!!" Rlj Entertainment has debuted a trailer via the Today show for a film called Nina, starring Zoe Saldana as the very rambunctious Nina Simone, who was a singer, songwriter, pianist, and civil rights activist. While there was a documentary made about Nina recently nominated for an Oscar this year, called What Happened, Miss Simone?, but this film is a much more powerful drama and features the relationship between Nina and Clifton Henderson, played by David Oyelowo. Both Saldana and Oyelowo look kind of amazing in this, no seriously, they looks incredible. Kind of interesting to follow up the Oscar ceremony - like, look, here is a great black performance!! Temptation: Confessions Of A Marriage Counselor Directed by Tyler Perry Starring: Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Lance Gross, Robbie Jones, Ella Joyce, Brandy Norwood, Kim Kardashian, Vanessa L. Williams I’d like to preface this review by saying I’m actually a fan of Tyler Perry. I’ve enjoyed a majority of his plays, with my favorite being Madea’s Class Reunion. While his plays do benefit from the live audience reaction, and Perry’s ability to play off of that, his soap operatic nature becomes a strength rather than a weakness. Unfortunately, in the transition to cinema, a lot of Perry’s soap opera stories become comical, and turn what should be a serious story into pure, unintentional [ Read More ]

The thing that made Tyler Perry rich is much in evidence in "Tyler Perry's Temptation." It was called "Confessions of a Marriage Counselor" when he toured with it on stage.
There's no Madea here. But the women are beautiful, serious about clothes, makeup, hair and church.
Older women are "Wise Councils," the name of a female-centric church in the movie. And they typically get all the funny, sometimes profane, always "you-listen-to-me-child" lines.
The men are shirtless, rapacious heels, or sensitive pretty-boy disappointments. That doesn't matter, as these movies are first and foremost "chick flicks" -- sermonettes abut relationships, deserving more and eventually getting it.The women, I mean.
But "Temptation" is a cautionary tale about wanting what you haven't got. The marriage counselor Judith (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) at the heart of it is young, gorgeous, in a glamorous job with a high-end D.C. dating service. She married her childhood...

Despite the fact that she certainly could have used one before her laughable union, Tyler Perry's upcoming flick Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor puts Kim Kardashian front and center and the results—and reviews—will certainly vary. The great thing, however, is that no mattter how horribly the most popular Kardashian does, no matter how many angry customers riot in the theatres and storm out ready to murder every single person in Hollywood, they have to agree that at least it's not Alex Cross, and at least there's no sick looking Matthew Fox terrorizing black people. Right? Right!

A couple of months ago, Christian filmmaker Tyler Perry cast reality TV star Kim Kardashian in his youth-oriented movie The Marriage Counselor. Just recently, Kardashian's 72-day marriage to NBA player Kris Humphries sparked an outcry online, whether from those with no life of their own, those who worship TV trash and feel betrayed by their goddess, those who — unlike Clint Eastwood — believe in the "sanctity" of marriage (even if only in the sanctity of other people's marriages), or those who point out that in the United States Kardashian and Humphries can get married as often and for as little time as they want while gay couples, no matter how long-lasting their relationship, can't. After some of Perry's fans — who tend to be a traditionalist lot — condemned his casting of Kardashian, Perry defended his decision by writing on his blog: After I finished writing this movie, I sat back and re-read it.

Remember that time a couple of weeks ago when one of television’s other most obnoxious celebrities got a divorce? Unfortunately, of course you do. Yet there was one crucial, ridiculous piece to this puzzle that I had completely forgotten about until today: One week before the implosion of Kim Kardashian’s marriage, the unlucky-in-love star was cast in Tyler’s Perry’s newest film, The Marriage Counselor, playing — you guessed it — a marriage counselor. The kasting was wonderfully, unintentionally timely, and also completely absurd. I’m sold.
Apparently, the irony has been lost on Perry’s dedicated fan-base. Today,...

Since Kim Kardashian announced late last month that she has joined the cast of Tyler Perry's next film, "The Marriage Counselor," critics and fans have sounded off on the filmmaker's decision to select the reality star in a role alongside Brandy, Lance Gross and Vanessa Williams.
On Wednesday evening the multifaceted media mogul responded to everyone who threatened to boycott his film in an open letter posted on his site. Perry dismissed reports that Kardashian is not in a lead role and how she's a role model for today's youth.
"She literally has millions of young people following her. I thought and still do think, that it would be very responsible of her to be a part of this film," he wrote. "To have the young people that look up to her, see her in a film that is about, what happens in life when you make the wrong choices.

A reminder for B… As part of MoMA’s Charles Burnett retrospective that began last week, today, at 4:30Pm titled Charles Burnett: The Power To Endure, you can watch a program of short films by Charles Burnett when they screen tonight at MoMA – films that I doubt most of us have seen! These are films he made between 1969 and 2007, since his student days through the recent past. So, consider it a treat!
Titles, years and running times include: Several Friends, 1969, 21 min; The Horse, 1973, 14 min; When It Rains, 1995. 13 min; Olivia’s Story, 2000. 14 min; and Quiet As Kept, 2007. 6 min.
That should be interesting viewing, and I’m looking forward it!
And keep in mind that the retrospective runs through April 25th, with practically Burnett’s entire oeuvre in the lineup of films to screen, although a week into the series, several have already been shown. However, there will be some repeats; for example,...

Damn! I totally effed up and scheduled our podcast season debut tonight, completely forgetting that the MoMA Charles Burnett retrospective also begins tonight! And with his masterpiece too, Killer Of Sheep, which I Still haven’t seen on the big screen, and really want to. I have the recently released DVD issue, but, I think this is a film I’d really love to see in a theater, in all its gritty black and white glory.
Anyway… I already alerted you to this about 2 or 3 weeks ago, so consider this a reminder! MoMA sent out the below press release which details the entire retrospective.
But I’ll break it down for you:
What is it? Charles Burnett is being feted at MoMA (the Museum of Modern Art, here in New York City) with a series titled Charles Burnett: The Power To Endure.
When is it? April 6-25, 2011.
Where is it?...

It’s time for a new spotlight here at Rewind Recaps, and after exploring the dramatic side of New York with the best of the first season of Third Watch, I thought we’d lighten up a little with another New York-based show that also aired on NBC.
NewsRadio (1995-1999) was the genesis of the modern workplace sitcom, and is probably one of the best comedies ever to see the airwaves. As a kid, I grew up watching this and Wings. Imagine my surprise to rediscover it on TV recently and realize that fifteen years later, it’s still just as funny as I thought it was then. The only thing that’s changed is I no longer have my childhood crush on Dave Foley. (Although I did meet him in 2004 and again in 2006, when I was covering Bravo’s Celebrity Poker Showdown, and I can...
