For Rhett Wilkins, acting has always been a process of self-discovery. After graduating high school in San Antonio, he enrolled in acting classes on a whim. A few months later, however, he wanted to pursue acting more seriously and at the urging of his agency he moved to Los Angeles. After working in low budget film and television, Wilkins took a break from acting, moved to New Braunfels, Texas, and worked in a plant nursery.

Wilkins eventually returned to acting; he wrote, produced, and starred in his own short film, Tuesday. In 2004, he appeared in the feature film, The Puffy Chair, which premiered at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival.

In 2006, The Puffy Chair was nominated for two Independent Spirit Awards.

Auditioned for filmmaker David DeCoteau after DeCoteau saw him walking down a hallway at Full Moon Pictures on Hollywood and Vine. He was so new to L.A. he didn't have a home yet. He was staying at a hotel in Burbank. Tobe Hooper cast him immediately after Rhett finished shooting Voodoo Academy for DeCoteau.
