William Wyler’s Dead End made its screen debut on Aug. 27, 1937. The film adaptation of Sidney Kingsley’s Broadway play starred Sylvia Sidney and Joel McCrea, and featured Humphrey Bogart in third billing. But the movie was stolen from them all by a gang of upstart juvenile delinquents, who nicked audience attention like a fancy watch mugged off a clueless rich brat.
Billy Halop, Huntz Hall, Gabe Dell, Bobby Jordan, Bernard Punsly, and Leo Gorcey were the original teen menaces who terrorized theatergoers when the play opened on Oct. 28, 1935. Directed by the playwright, Dead End ran for 684 performances, and is still the longest-running play in the Belasco Theater’s history. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt saw it three times.
Nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture, Dead End isn’t the greatest gangster movie of all time. It followed the classic era of the genre; it was produced by Samuel Goldwyn for MGM studios,...

Prime Video’s panel for The Wheel of Time held on October 7, 2022 at the New York Comic Con featured plenty of interesting tidbits on season two. Showrunner Rafe Judkins joined cast members Marcus Rutherford (“Perrin Aybara”), Madeleine Madden (“Egwene Al’Vere”), Daniel Henney (“Lan Mandragoran”), Dónal Finn (“Mat Cauthon”), and Ceara Coveney (“Elayne Trakand”) on stage at Javits Center to share some of what’s in store for the highly anticipated new season.
Judkins said season two will include a dive into the Seanchan world and will take the story through the end of Robert Jordan’s third book in The Wheel of Time series. Key characters will be going on journeys on their own, rather than the group dynamics we saw in season one. Judkins also promised that after the hard work of setting up this world in the first season, season two will allow viewers to spend more...

The Series: "The Wheel of Time"

The Pitch: "The Wheel of Time" was a book series by Robert Jordan that I read years ago, but even after "Game of Thrones," I thought there was no way they'd ever make this into a series — there are so many books and so much world-building. That's great if you love complex worlds as you read, but really complicated in a TV show. How much do you do in terms of writing the stories for fans, versus trying to attract new viewers? I just didn't think there was any way for this to happen. Well, happen it did, and it's beautiful! I know there are book fans out...

“I want my Game of Thrones.”
This was reportedly the demand that Amazon chairman Jeff Bezos made of the development team at Amazon Studios five years ago. At the time, the online retail colossus’ streaming video service was best known — to those customers even aware that they got original TV shows free with their Amazon Prime subscription — for quirky boutique comedies like Transparent, or dad-friendly book adaptations like Bosch. George R.R. Martin has given the world a series of books that captivated us. The "A Song of Ice and Fire" novels inspired the HBO series "Game of Thrones," and his 2018 prequel book "Fire and Blood" has spawned the upcoming series "House of the Dragon," set 200 years before the first series. It's a complex world, full of rich characters, dark dealings, power-mad rulers, and brave souls fighting for their freedom, and often, their lives.
The first book came out in 1996, and the fifth in 2011. As this is supposed to be a seven book series, you can understand that many fans are anxious for the sixth book after 11 years of waiting. Martin has been busy with public appearances, his work on both of the HBO series, and writing the prequel, and on his website, he has given different sorts of updates on the state of the sixth book, with his self-imposed deadlines passing again and again.

Amazon's adaptation of the novels has faithfully captured the splendor and visuals of the fantasy world in Jordan's books while making it relatively accessible for non-fantasy fans. “The Lord of the Rings” movie trilogy became one of the most popular movie trilogies ever and one with the most accolades. All the world knows the story of this epic drama from Middle-earth. The trilogy won a staggering seventeen Oscars and had thirteen other nominations. Now, an Amazon Prime Video series based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s work is coming out on a huge budget, so we wonder, can “Lotr: The Rings Of Power” succeed like the trilogy?
It’s doubtful that “Lotr: The Rings of Power” will have similar success as the trilogy. The cast members are not as well-known, and the characters are different, so nostalgic fans might miss the old crew. Still, it has a colossal budget and great source material, so it might surprise us all.

Enough sprawling fantasy epics have been adapted for film and TV in the past 20 years that the genre has developed a set of conventional sights and sounds. The music, for example, has its own sense of sprawl, with sweeping orchestral and choral arrangements whose influence traces back to Tolkien — or, in this case, Howard Shore’s Wagnerian opus for the Peter Jackson “Lord of the Rings” films. When approaching Amazon Prime Video’s take on “The Wheel Of Time,” composer Lorne Balfe and and showrunner Rafe Judkins were determined to buck convention. Balfe created distinctly different sounds that aren’t necessarily concerned with making the world introduced in Robert Jordan’s bestselling novels feel vast and operatic. But he did create a lot of them.

So fantasy, after all, is not just for geeks. With the blockbuster that has been the HBO adaptation of George R.R Martin’s fantasy series, A Song of Ice and Fire, suddenly the world of elves, magic and dragons are cool. Sexy, even.
A Game of Thrones may have done the impossible; improved upon an already excellent series of books. So often the most exquisitely detailed adaptations fall short of reader’s expectations, particularly in the fantasy genre. But my own version of Westeros wasn’t that far different to HBO’s- and I think the sex scenes are even better in the TV series.
I remember reading A Game of Thrones some five years ago now. I liked but didn’t love the books, and arduously made my way through the series in a relatively noncommittal way. I was on A Feast For Crows by the time the TV show came out.

With The Hobbit films guaranteed to make a fortune at the box office and Game of Thrones busy putting the ‘fun’ back in ‘horrifyingly dysfunctional,’ we’re guaranteed to see some more of our favourite fantasy novels converted to the big screen in the forthcoming years. Now these things can go horribly wrong (remember Eragon?, Of course you don’t) but there are plenty of great series’ that deserve the Hollywood treatment.
Note: This article will focus on the series or standalone books that have a chance of being a good film. As much as I’d like to see Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time books (battle-nuns throwing fireballs at eyeless shadowmen) and R. Scott Bakker’s The Prince of Nothing series (sociopath messiah co-opts Holy War to commit patricide) made into films, you’d need a serious character-ectomy and a glossary in your popcorn.

The winter is coming… this spring. Anticipation for the third season of HBO’s enormously popular fantasy series, Game of Thrones began right at the season two’s end, and now the network has announced the season three premiere date with a cunning teaser poster via their Facebook page. Check it out below.
We know that the upcoming 10-episode season will cover roughly the first half of George R.R. Martin’s third book in the “Song of Ice and Fire” series, A Storm of Swords, and Irish actor Ciaran Hinds (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) portrays the anxious-to-see-him Mance Rayder (aka “The King Beyond the Wall”).
Oooh I’m so happy to return back into the Game of Thrones world, so March 31st, 2013 can’t get here soon enough – but I think it just might pass sooner than I’d think, since I have lots of good stuff to read and...

Like someone who underestimated how much space there was left in the margin, Lionsgate has just said “eh, screw it” and crammed the rest of their casting news in at the bottom. After months of slowly and methodically revealing the actors in their highly anticipated sequel, the studio has added eleven new faces to their marketing team’s Facebook trading card/advent calendar doohicky.
While most of them probably won’t have a line longer than “Whu–?” in the movie, this final bit of news rounds out the list of tributes participating in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’s murder-a-thon.

The long list of new castmates for "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" is now finally complete.
Lionsgate unleashed the names of the last remaining tributes joining the fold for supporting roles in "Catching Fire" today, filling in the remaining spaces in Districts 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 with actors Justin Hix, Megan Hayes, James Logan, Ivette Li-Sanchez, Bobby Jordan (Blight), John Casino (Woof), Elena Sanchez (Cecelia), Daniel Bernhardt, Marian Greene, Jackson Spidell and Tiffany Waxler.
The near-dozen new faces are mostly all relative newcomers to the game, but they'll take arms with the best of 'em for the "Hunger Games" sequel, and at least one of the to-be tributes is openly stoked at the prospect. Megan Hayes responded to the news release on Twitter today writing, "Finally! Please forgive all the secrets, fibs, half truths I have been keeping/telling lately! District 6!!!"
As Effie Trinket might say, "Welcome, welcome."

For me, the biggest issue I had with Justin Cronin’s apocalyptic novel, The Passage, was I could not get emotionally attached to any of the characters, which is the basic premise for any novel. He starts out with a good idea, and spends 250 pages setting it all up, and then just as the novel appears to really kick in, it falls off a massive cliff and only recovers –somewhat – towards the latter half. What’s in between is nothing but bland, undefined characters –mostly like the red shirt security guards on the original run of Star Trek – who you really can feel nothing for.
The Passage begins around 2018, and lays the ground work for what later would be a post-apocalyptic world that is overrun by vampire-like beings that are infected by a highly contagious virus (once again, the military is blamed for it). What begins as a project (Noah,...

The Game of Thrones might have just ended a few weeks ago, but the Dance with Dragons will be starting a few weeks hence.

(Afraid that pursuing such articles might ruin future books/television seasons for you? Don’t worry – one of Toth’s most distinguishing factors is its scope filter, a magic wand that removes all references to future developments. Read easy, friends.)

This book was marvelous. It caught my interest from the very beginning with the author’s unique use of magic. The world created in Mistborn isn’t entirely original, as many fantasy books involve a land where there is an evil ruler who oppresses a lower class, but in Mistborn it’s the abilities the characters have and how they use these abilities to bring down their oppressor that brings a new twist to this formula. It also helps that Sanderson brings his characters to life in such a way that you can’t help but care what happens to them.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with the author, Brandon Sanderson is the man who is working on the last couple of books in the Wheel of Time series. A man who has garnered the trust of Robert Jordan must be pretty awesome, right? Still, if that...

BookExpo America, the largest industry convention for publishers, booksellers, librarians, and other folks in the industry, runs at the Javits Center in New York this week. In 2002, I started reading the most fantastic fantasy series. You may have heard of it. It was "A Song of Ice and Fire," the first book of which has a title familiar to the illiterate hordes who can only watch HBO: "A Game of Thrones." I was burnt out by that point on Robert Jordan, as the novels of "A Wheel of Time" got progressively longer and less and less happened even while entire chapters seemed devoted to describing dresses worn by secondary characters. "A Game of Thrones" was a breath of fresh air. Vile, dark, yet with just enough goodness and hope that a reader craved to see how it would end. There was a tangible feeling that Martin was making a world so morally hazy that when eventually some tainted victory came, it would blaze blinding in eyes grown used to seeing only in shades of gray.

Since the dawn of the fantasy genre, which should properly be attributed to J.R. R. Tolkien, there have been many, many attempts by many authors to replicate what he did. Sure there has been many fantasy books published before and after, but most were more magical realism –setting them in our world, and then adding fantasy elements (such as the King Arthur stories, or even Homer’s The Odyssey) – than what Tolkien created with his The Lord of the Rings. He was the first World Builder, outside of science fiction, who created a universe so different, with new words, new phrases and new creatures. Sure, these stories were basically retelling of ancients myths most of learned about in school, with their battle between good and evil , but to create a world filled with so many new things, with so many new cities, religions, people it seemed the author was...

I had not read Brandon Mull’s Fablehaven series of fantasy books for young readers, but like much that has come out since the rise of Harry Potter, you knew it was going to fall somewhere between that series and the more adult fantasy of say J.R.R. Tolkien. I mean, as a reader of this genre over the decades, I’ve become pretty critical of writers attempts at World Building this genre demands. Only a few authors have succeed in creating interesting Universes to pay homage to the granddaddy of all fantasy, The Lord of the Rings, but most are ignored, like David Eddings, Stephen R. Donaldson (two mainstays of the 1980s), Tad Williams and Raymond E. Feist. While Terry Brooks (another 80s writer) remains popular, his multi-volume Shannara series (along with Piers Anthony’s Xanth series) have become over bloated with prequels and sequels that dilute the franchise to...

Sneak Peek the new teaser trailer supporting the upcoming 3D feature "Conan The Barbarian".
Starring Jason Momoa as the 'Cimmerian' warrior, the new film adapts the adventures of author Robert E. Howard's "Conan", set during the 'Hyborian' age.
Directed by Marcus Nispel, "Conan The Barbarian" co-stars Rachel Nichols, Stephen Lang, Bob Sapp, Leo Howard, Ron Perlman, Said Taghmaoui and Rose McGowan.
"Hither came Conan, the Cimmerian, black-haired, sullen-eyed, sword in hand, with gigantic melancholies and gigantic mirth, to tread the jeweled thrones of the Earth under his sandalled feet..."
The new film started shooting March 2010, based on a screenplay by Joshua Oppenheimer ("Sahara") and Thomas Dean Donnelly ("Cowboys & Aliens") closely adhering to Howard's shadowy "Weird Tales" pulp magazine stories from the 1930's.
Joe Gatta and Avi Lerner of Millennium Films produced "Conan The Barbarian" alongside Paradox Entertainment president/CEO Fredrik Malmberg, rights holder of the Howard estate.

People with fancy degrees in this sort of thing have dissected, analyzed and probed every battle, every song and every family tree to exhaustion.
As if to ever so cruelly illustrate this point, the day I began writing this review a think piece is published on Pajiba in which...

As the nation recovers from Tony Blair's literary mea innocentia, another era-defining memoir emerges this week when Straight Up, Danny Dyer's shoot-from-the-hip autobiography hits the shelves. The publicity confides that the book "tears it up proper and delivers on every page", and only the very naive would doubt such a claim. Everyone knows Dyer as the salt-of-the-earth rough diamond whose straight-talking DVD commentaries and girlfriend-slashing "production error" in his advice column have made him the toast of coalition Britain.
Less well known is that the Canning Town bruiser and the late Harold Pinter shared a generation-spanning and credulity-stretching friendship.
