Despite the fact that this belongs in the “Well, duh!” category, it’s still news nonetheless.
Deals have now been finalized (with the ink barely dry) for the Lord of the Rings writing trio of Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens (who successfully adapted the Tolkien trilogy into a multi-billion dollar grossing franchise and a ton of Academy Awards) to perform scripting duties for its prequel The Hobbit and the currently untitled “bridge” film.
They’ll be typing away alongside its director Guillermo del Toro - who’s now free to fully concentrate on the matter with Hellboy II: The Golden Army in theaters.
Not to sound too much like a smart-ass (I know, too late!) But who honestly thought Jackson, Walsh and Boyens wouldn’t come back? Not that I’m knocking them in any way, shape or form. Hell, they’re probably getting paid a truckload or three worth of money.

Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens have now officially signed on to work on "The Hobbit" as well as it's sequel with helmer Guillermo de Toro. This comes four months after del Toro confirms his role as director of the film. Jackson, Walsh and Boyens teamed on penning the three screenplay adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkein’s "The Lord of the Rings." del Toro is a monster-maestro in his own right with exceptional work behind the wheel of Oscar nominee for best supporting film "Pan's Labyrinth." In turn, del Toro helmed both "Hellboy" features starring Ron Perlman and Selma Blair. I wonder if multiple collaborator Doug Jones who played in boy "Hb" pics as well as "Pan" will contribute this time around?...

Iof First Look: Fear Itself - "Skin And Bones"
Indie genre favorite Larry Fessenden (The Last Winter, Wendigo) tackles this week's episode of Fear Itself entitled, "Skin and Bones" concerning a subject that director is quite familiar with.
A rancher, played by Doug Jones (Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth) goes missing in the mountains for ten days
and miraculously returns home... rather different. Now, his somewhat dysfunctional family must face the
ravenous, supernatural force residing inside him.
What makes this episode really work is the incredible Doug Jones. If fellow Hellboy star Ron Perlman is this
generation's Boris Karloff, then Jones is most definitely our Lon Chaney. Doug absolutely owns this
role, his performance shining through the very subtle prosthetics and makeup. It's clear that this man is
more than just a guy with foam latex stuck to his face. He's a very rare kind of actor who understands makeup as a tool,

For those who made it (and for those who didn't), here's a little video treat from the Guillermo Del Toro visit to the Alamo last week. Guillermo used to live in Austin a few years ago and while here threw some great parties. One of his signature moves is to prepare a drink called a Muppet for an unsuspecting visitor. The ingredients are as follows: a Lot of tequilla, fresh squeezed limes, Mexican grapefruit soda. You hand the drink to the sucker and then slam in some kosher salt on the top of the drink, making it fizz. The recipient has to drink the whole thing and hold the last swallow in his/her mouth. Watch the video to find out the last all-important step.
In addition to this video, you can check out a bunch of photos on the Alamo Flickr site. Also in attendance at the sneak preview

Issue #80
July 2008
Now that I’ve seen and fallen in love with Hellboy II: The Golden Army (review), the cover for this issue and Rue Morgue’s subsequent coverage of Guillermo del Toro’s masterful sequel is that much more meaningful. There’s something about the way Jovanka’s interview with del Toro rolls that gives it a very intimate feel; just one of the things I dig about this magazine.
A chat with Doug Jones, who has more roles than anyone in Hellboy II, reviews of some of the printed expansions of the Hellboy universe and a very, very fast interview with creator Mike Mignola round out the love for Golden Army. Thankfully it is well justified love as hopefully most, if not all, of you discovered last weekend.
From demons and monsters to ... well, demons, monsters and aliens; the second big piece is Monica Kuebler’s focus on X-Files: I Want to Believe.

Short version: Hellboy II: The Golden Army stretches beyond the first film in both creepiness and humor, making for kind of an odd mix that manages to work in the end.
Screen Rant reviews Hellboy II
Hellboy II: The Golden Army is great, but like the first one, I don’t think it’s for everyone. The first Hellboy only earned $100Mm worldwide, which does not exactly classify it as a (pardon the pun) monster hit. That’s not to say it wasn’t great (it was), it’s just that the world of Hellboy is an odd combination of demons, humor, action and creepiness. Oh, and the hero is a demon.
Director Guillermo del Toro’s fingerprints are all over this, right from the start of the film. We actually meet Hellboy as a, well, boy - and this gives John Hurt a chance to cameo as the adopted father of Hellboy,

Starring Ron Perlman, Selma Blair, and Doug Jones
Directed by Guillermo del Toro
Rated PG-13
Hellboy II: The Golden Army gets an awful lot right. Two problems: What it gets right the film takes a while to establish and develop, and Hellboy II also gets a few things wrong.
This is still an entertaining film for about the last hour - at least that's where the real highlights are - and it does show the near boundless limitations on director Guillermo del Toro's unique imagination.
Beginning with what's right, the most important thing is that the story works as a sequel. This movie doesn't feel tacked on just to make money. Hellboy, of course, is played by Ron Perlman, and he's great in the character, pretty much an average man's man who happens to be some sort of indestructible mutant. But he smokes cigars, drinks Tecate,

With the upcoming release of Guillermo del Toro's Hellboy II: The Golden Army this weekend, the talented Doug Jones yet again gets to showcase his brilliant creature acting in three roles: Abe Sapien, the Chamberlain, and the Angel of Death. Luckily I had the chance to interview Doug recently and it was truly an honor - he is one of my favorite actors who always does a fantastic job. His talents are limitless and he's captured my fascination as Abe in Hellboy, the Silver Surfer in Fantastic Four, and the Faun in Pan's Labyrinth. Doug and I talked about the mythology of the character of Abe Sapien, about being a lost soul, how glad he was to finally hear his own voice for Abe, and his work with the now legendary Guillermo del Toro. If you're as big of a fan of his work as I am, this is an

Photo: Universal Pictures I am finally going to see Hellboy 2: The Golden Army next Tuesday, and while it was one of those films I was trying to avoid seeing a trailer for, one popped up during my screening of The Incredible Hulk and while I wish I hadn't seen anything before seeing the movie I must admit it was pretty damned impressive. I have just added seven new clips from the flick for you to digest, and you can check out all of them by clicking on any of the links below. I have also placed a widget below the clips, which is part of the ad campaign Universal is running around the site (I am sure you have seen a banner or two during your visit).
