Before Alan Wake hit the scene, PC gamers had Gabriel Knight as their horror author caught in a psychological nightmare. Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers hit the PC back in December 1993, and despite its eventual sales figures deeming it to be a disappointment, Sins of the Fathers still received praise from critics and fans, thanks in part to its voice cast and mature story. Publisher Sierra still stuck with it, and kicked off a series that remains highly regarded among fans of the adventure genre.
Gabriel Knight is a cocky New Orleans book store owner and author struggling with a case of writer’s block. Compounding the situation for Gabriel are his recurring nightmares. Currently looking for material by researching a series of killings across New Orleans, Gabriel’s research leads him to determine that that the police’s theory about mob-related killings is wrong. Rather, the killings are...

Someone once said that no matter what time of day you watch Ed Wood's legendary B-movie "Plan 9 From Outer Space," it always feels like three o'clock in the morning. The mere mention of Troma movies has a similar effect on me; suddenly it's a Friday night down Blockbuster Video in the early '90s all over again. Friends are coming over with beer and pizza and all I need is something with guns, boobs, car crashes, monsters, and cheap laughs for the perfect night in.
Headed by the cartoonish figure of Lloyd Kaufman, the studio has produced and distributed a steady stream of Z-grade trash for over 40 years now, and anyone who was around during the glory days of rental will be familiar with their sleazy back catalog. The world of Troma is both wacky and cynical, populated by dweebs, perverts, knuckleheads, psychos, bimbos, scumlords, and violent morons.

With the release of Carlo Carlei's Romeo and Juliet, we at Digital Spy decided to take a look back at the other adaptations of William Shakespeare's famous tragedy.
The 2013 incarnation hits today (October 11) and stars Douglas Booth and Hailee Steinfeld as the star-crossed lovers, alongside Damian Lewis, Stellan Skarsgard and Paul Giamatti, with the screenplay written by Downtown Abbey creator Julian Fellowes.
There have been plenty of adaptations from over the years, so here we pick out the best of the bunch...
West Side Story (1961)
Perhaps not the most blatant adaptation of Shakespeare's play, but the inspiration is clearly abundant in directors Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins's Oscar-winning musical from 1961. The story revolves around two youngsters - Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer - from rival gangs who fall in love (sound familiar?) that fuels the feud between members of the White Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks.

For gamers who crave supernatural mysteries and great storytelling, the classic Sierra adventure Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Father pretty much remains the greatest game ever made. With the rise of tablet gaming, fans have been clamoring for a re-release, and it looks like our prayers have finally been answered.
In what may be the most exciting news all month, creator and game designer Jane Jensen has announced that a 20th Anniversary remake is in the works and launched an official website with a few sneak peek images of the HD version.
The remastered Gabriel Knight is currently planned for a 2014 multi-platform release on PC, Mac, iPad and Android.
As thrilled as we are about this news, there's one catch: Jensen was unable to get rights to the original audio tracks, which means the new edition will have completely new voice recordings. Considering the original had the best voice cast and narrator in gaming history,...

Between Tim Schafer (Grim Fandango), Jane Jensen (Gabriel Knight), Al Lowe (Leisure Suit Larry), all having successfully funded Kickstarter campaigns for upcoming adventure games, the genre might appear pretty well represented. However, there's one thing we haven't yet seen come out of this resurgence; Full Motion Video games.
This is likely because they generally weren't very good and had the sort of production values one associates with Mystery Science Theatre fodder, but Chris' Jones and Aaron Conners' Tex Murphy series was wry enough to have a sense of humor about its unholy union of acting in front of a green screen with a game.
Unfortunately, the series ended with a cliffhanger in 1998's Tex Murphy: Overseer, but Jones and Conners would like to remedy that with "Project Fedora," a new Tex Murphy adventure funded via Kickstarter. Jones will be reprising his role as the eccentric private eye,...

Space Quest series creators Mark Crowe and Scott Murphy have returned to the games industry after an over two decade hiatus under their new label, Two Guys from Andromeda. Their first project, SpaceVenture, just began its Kickstarter campaign.
SpaceVenture will be a "space adventure" game in the vain of Space Quest. Two Guys From Andromeda have already roped in an all-star voice cast consisting of GLaDOS voice actress, Ellen McClain, the voice of Space Ghost, Gary Owens, and ubiquitous cartoon voice actor, Rob Paulsen (Wakko from Animaniacs, Raphael from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles).
The Eugene, Or-based outfit seeks $500,000 by Jun 12th to fund the project. The Kickstarter has been up less than a day and as of writing this they've amassed $78,587 in pledges. Donating $15 or more guarantees access to a DRM free version of the game upon its release, while a pledge of $30 or more will grant...

Gabriel Knight creator Jane Jensen recently suggested in an interview with Polygon that her long dormant globe-trotting archaeological mystery series may resurface sometime soon.
The Gabriel Knight series spanned three titles from 1993's Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Father to 1999's Gabriel Knight: Blood of the Sacred, Blood of the Damned. Recently, Jensen founded her new Kickstarter-based company, Pinkerton Road. Jensen describes the studio's first game, Moebius, as a "metaphysical adventure in the vain of Dante's Equation, Gray Matter, and Gabriel Knight." In a more recent Kickstarter update she promises a second project funded by a publisher and describes this "mystery game x" as "a third-person adventure game" and "a dark mystery of the kind you would normally associate with me." "You will be excited," she adds.
Jensen admits that while she's "mentally moved on" from Gabriel Knight, she would like to revisit the rogueish detective/novelist...
