- I was into photography and music probably more than anything. I still think probably music is my real love. I think that it's listening to music that made me want to be a filmmaker. When I was in film school, the second I sat down at a Steenbeck with film that I had just shot and put in music to it, that was it. Instantaneously, I couldn't get enough of it, and it had nothing to do with career or want or desire. I liked to sit there and do that twenty-four hours a day. I was like, 'I can't stop doing this. This is it.'
- [on the work of directors Elia Kazan, Stanley Kubrick and Martin Scorsese] Those guys are great at the tension of the unknown. You don't know where the story is going, and you're not made to feel comfortable or safe.
- I really understand visuals in a way that I didn't before, which is by no means to say I'm a master at all. It's only to say that by getting to try out a bunch of different styles, and different lenses, my understanding has become more fluid.
- [on Kodak's new Super 8 camera] People like to think that digital mediums can do anything film can do, nowadays, but that simply isn't true. Digital is great for certain things, but it is still different. There are plenty of looks, feelings and qualities that only film can do, and you simply cannot capture digitally. [2016]
- [on casting Wonder Woman (2017)] I remember when I read in the news that Wonder Woman had been cast and my heart sank. I had been talking to the studio for so long about doing it and I was like well 'that's that.' I'm sure we wouldn't have made the same choice. And then I started paying attention to her, and watching her and looking at her and it was just unbelievable. (...) Frankly, I think they did a better job than I could have because I don't know that I would have scoured the earth as hard to find her. I don't know that I would've looked internationally. I would have just looked for an American girl. The fact that they found Gal [Gal Gadot] and chose her is a magical gift to me. (...) She shares every quality with Wonder Woman and that's no joke. It's one of those rare things. You need someone who can appear to be Wonder Woman on screen. That's what you're looking for - someone who can embody all of those. [2017]
- [observation, 2017] Our fantasy of a hero is that he's the good guy who is going to shut down the bad guy. That has got to change if we want to deal with the crisis that we're in. There is no bad guy. We are all to blame. New kinds of heroics need to be celebrated, like love, thoughtfulness, forgiveness, diplomacy, or we're not going to get there. No one is coming to save us.
- [on Wonder Woman (2017)] One of my favorite things about this movie is that being a brave and thoughtful hero is a lesson that is wonderful to hand down. It's not about fame and luck, it's hard to do the right thing, and you might be alone in doing it.
- The second I wanted to be a director there were constant flirtations and inappropriate overtures and requests to have meetings in weird places.
