On April 5, Roddenberry Entertainment, the company behind the “Star Trek” universe, launches a brand new sci-fi podcast called “Does It Fly?” that answers one of the biggest questions sci-fi geeks love to ponder: Could the technology we love in out-there science fiction franchises someday exist in real life?
We’re talking about the “Star Trek” transporter, the subject of the first episode, as well as the lightsabers in “Star Wars,” the replicants in “Blade Runner,” Iron Man’s Arc Reactor, the Tardis from “Doctor Who,” and the technological and philosophical questions raised in the “Black Mirror” episode “San Junipero” — all will be episode topics in the future on the podcast, which will be hosted by astrophysicist and science communicator Dr. Hakeem Oluseyi and pop-culture aficionado Tamara Krinsky.
The concept for this show — along with its very title — comes from something Gene Roddenberry, who pitched a version of the transporter in...

The Walking Dead franchise has been delivering more twists and turns since its series finale in 2022, thanks to three new spinoffs.
With New York Comic-Con on Thursday, it was inevitable we'd be getting some announcements about the projects keeping the Twd universe alive.
We'll start with the latest information for The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live.
AMC has unveiled the first footage of Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira, which sees them reprising their Rick and Michonne roles.
In the clip, Rick is in a voiceover talking about his plight.
"I tried to get away. Please know I tried… but I failed."
"Just know," he adds. "I love you."
It's quite the tearjerker. Check out the promo below.
AMC also dropped some casting news for the series, revealing that Pollyanna McIntosh is returning as Jadis.
Jadis will have the rare distinction of appearing in three Twd-related series.
After leaving the main series alongside Rick,...

Jonathan Lee is a designer whose work has appeared in Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones and the Bond movie Tomorrow Never Dies, but his latest job is perhaps his most iconic yet – production designer for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
In particular, Lee was responsible for designing much of the interior for the latest iteration of the world’s most famous starship. We had a chat with him to learn the secrets of this version of the USS Enterprise Ncc-1701
Here’s what we learned.
The Tos Enterprise Got a Lot Right First Time
Jonathan and his team were not the first to redesign the Enterprise for the 2020s. A large part of why Strange New Worlds was commissioned was the warm fan reception to a guest appearance by Pike & Co in Star Trek: Discovery season 2, but even that appearance left a lot of room for the...

Star Trek has been with us for over 50 years in one form or another. It started in 1964 with the filming of the pilot episode of the original series, and it has continued to the present day, through films and subsequent TV series, along with other mediums such as books and video games.
We’re principally interested in the core of the franchise here, the TV series and films, and we’re going to take a look at some 'what if...' possibilities of projects that almost happened but didn’t. If you’re reading...

Happy Friday Trek fans! Here’s your first glance at the new Star Trek Into Darkness poster. (via Apple iTunes). Things aren’t looking good for the USS Enterprise (Ncc-1701 - Starfleet abbreviation for ‘Naval Construction Contract’). According to the designer of the original ship, art director Matt Jefferies, in The Making of Star Trek, the “USS” means “United Space Ship” and that “the Enterprise is a member of the Starship Class”.
Just as with Star Trek: The Search For Spock and the demise of that Enterprise, it’s never a welcomed sight to see the ship’s hull in flames.
It was unsettling in June of 1984 to watch Capt. Kirk (William Shatner) order the computer to begin the sixty-second auto-destruct sequence. To see the great saucer disintegrate in that 3rd movie and to watch it all over again in the new previews for J.J. Abrams film is just...

The Galileo shuttlecraft seen in the original Star Trek series recently sold at auction for over $70,000 and is about to undergo a complete restoration. After the series was canceled in 1969, it spent most of its time neglected in various storage yards and hangers. Some tried to restore it in the past but because it was only designed to have a short life span as a TV prop, it’s been an expensive and uphill struggle to keep it maintained. Considering the popularity of Star Trek and the way the model of the Enterprise has been so lovingly preserved, it does seem strange that the same cant be said about the shuttle. You would think that fans of the series would be crying out for it to be placed in a museum but in fact, it’s spent most of it’s time deteriorating under a tarpaulin cover. Here is the story of the neglected shuttlecraft.

We live in a technological society that many say was inspired by the classic show "Star Trek." Cell phones, tablet computers, portable data storage, medical scanners, computers that can talk ... you name it, and "Star Trek" has addressed it one way or the other. Yet none of those devices really scream Star Trek. In fact, the Gene Roddenberry show was not always the first to introduce such concepts. But there could be a space vehicle created in the next 20 years that will no doubt be directly influenced by Star Trek -- because it would look exactly like the USS Enterprise. A self-proclaimed engineer who wants to only be known as "Bte-Dan" is telling visitors to his website that not only could the USS Enterprise be possible the way Matt Jefferies designed it, but it could happen in the ...

We recently spoke to Joe on a conference call interview andhe told us about how the show came about, some of his best finds, and theongoing quest for Dorothy’s ruby slippers...

Even the poor Pakleds who don’t know much about the world of Star Trek know the name Gene Roddenberry. The “Wagon Train to the Stars” was his brainchild, but every brainchild needs a brain trust. That small group of writers, producers and designers are legendary to maladjusted nerds like myself. Their names include Gene L. Coon, Robert Justman, John D.F. Black, Matt Jefferies and, first among equals, Dorothy “D.C.” Fontana.
