John Oliver got back to talking about politics on Last Week Tonight and took a swipe at O.J. Simpson.
While on the topic of U.S. Senator Bob Menendez and his wife Nadine Arslanian, Oliver showcased a clip of when he proposed to Arslanian in front of the Taj Mahal. While doing so, Menendez serenaded Arslanian with a musical number from The Greatest Showman.
Menendez sang “Never Enough” which lyrics say that “towers of gold will never be enough,” which made Oliver relate it to Simpson.
“It doesn’t look great now to hear the world’s oldest theater kid sing about how ‘towers of gold will never be enough’ for him, given the multiple gold bars that were found in his actual house,” Oliver said. “I don’t care how much you like a song, if it sounds like a confession, maybe don’t sing it in public.”
Oliver then quipped,...

The power of "Sweeney Todd" lies in its ability to seduce its audience to stare (and chortle) at the ingenuity of murderous cannibalism. Since its 1979 opening on Broadway (starring Len Cariou and Angela Lansbury), the darkly comic "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street" has been a general favorite of Stephen Sondheim's musicals (depending on who you ask). It exists at the intersection of traditional musical theatre and operetta, permitting a flexible theatricality from the small-scale (John Doyle's 2005 version and the 2017 Barrow Street immersive pie shop staging) to the grandiose opera stage. In the hands of "Hamilton" director Thomas Kail, "Sweeney Todd" stays true to its theatrical technicalities on the Broadway stage for the most part.
Inspired by the 1840s penny dreadful serial and Christopher Bond's 1973 stage retelling, Hugh Wheeler's book deals with injustice in 19th-century London. "Sweeney Todd" follows the eponymous barber who returns...

First “Company,” then “Into the Woods,” and now the demon barber of Fleet Street. In the year or so since legendary composer Stephen Sondheim’s death, Broadway has seen an increasing number of revivals of his works. The trend continued on March 26 at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre with the opening of a new production of his masterpiece, “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.” Tony nominee and internationally-renowned vocalist Josh Groban plays the menacing title role as the wronged barber out for revenge, starring opposite Tony winner Annaleigh Ashford as Mrs. Lovett, the schemer who devises baking Todd’s victims into meat pies in an austere nineteenth-century London.
Led by Tony-winning “Hamilton” director Thomas Kail, the ensemble also boasts Tony winner Ruthie Ann Miles (“The King and I”), Jordan Fisher, Gaten Matarazzo, and many others amongst its 25 players. Kail has also enlisted three-time Tony winner Alex Lacamoire as music supervisor...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “Zarak Mosadek,” the 18th episode of the fifth season of “The Blacklist.”
A bag of bones, a time jump and a brutal character death — ever since the midseason finale of NBC’s “The Blacklist,” viewers have been waiting to see how the story of Ian Garvey (Johnny Coyne), a.k.a. the man who killed Tom Keen (Ryan Eggold), would unfold. While Wednesday night’s episode, “Zarak Mosadek,” didn’t solve the mystery of the duffel bag, it did bring the audience one step closer to answers while introducing an even bigger question in the form of Raymond Reddington’s (James Spader) long lost daughter.
The character of Jennifer Reddington was first mentioned three years ago, but has never physically surfaced — despite Red dedicating his resources to find her — until now. She showed up in the final scene of...

The teaser Trailer for ‘Rapid Eye Movement‘ has been released, and it sure is a doozie. The plot of the movie centers around a man who attempts to break the 11-day world record for staying awake in the heart of Times Square. The film began shooting in New York all the way back in November of 2015, and the first teaser trailer is finally here. The film feels very reminiscent of films like ‘Buried‘ and ‘Phone Booth‘, seemingly taking place in one singular location. The film was shot almost exclusively in Times Square, and the filmmakers were given unprecedented access to the famous landmark. They were even allowed to construct a custom-built sound booth for shooting of the film.
‘Rapid Eye Movement‘ was directed by Francois Arnaud, and the movie was produced by Tentmaker Pictures and We Are Films through Fredrick Weiss, Peter Bishai, Gary Khon and Aaron Craig. The film stars Arnaud,...

"This didn't have to happen. You can stop it..." Gravitas Ventures has released an official trailer for an indie sci-fi post apocalyptic thriller titled Diverge, which has played at a bunch of sci-fi/genre film festivals all over the world the last two years. The film follows a lonely survivor of a deadly virus who is given the chance to reclaim his lost life by stopping the man responsible for the disease. Described as "equal parts science fiction and morality tale, Diverge tells the story of how the choices of one can have dire consequences for all." It's apparently much more philosophical and poetic than expected. Starring Ivan Sandomire, Jamie Jackson, Andrew Sensing, with a hypnotic new score by the Blair Brothers. Watch the trailer below. Monday saw the debut of two new drama thrillers in the Us, CBS’s Hostages and NBC’s The Blacklist, which aired head-to-head in the 10pm timeslot.
The former, which has been picked up by Channel 4 to air in the UK, was roundly trounced by The Blacklist in the ratings, which incidentally will debut in the UK on Sky Living on October 4th. Hostages isn’t quite D.O.A., but with a soft landing don’t expect Hostages to get a solid air date from Channel 4 until it’s fate looks a little clearer.
Until then, let’s have a look and see whether the shows themselves are any good, and if we should be looking forward to their UK debuts.
We’ll start with Hostages, which I have to admit, based on the trailer I wasn’t really looking forward to the Jerry Bruckheimer-produced show. The cast is solid,...

The first day of a new job can be a memorable moment in one’s life for some and an insignificant, ordinary day for another. On the pilot episode of NBC’s new profiling FBI procedural, The Blacklist, it’s hard to tell whether the first day of Elizabeth Keen (Megan Boone) is either memorable or just another day.
She’s late for her first day at the FBI in the counter-terrorism department when helicopters and black SUVs swarm her residence. If only the FBI were that diligent in keeping their tardy employees in order. Elizabeth’s been named by a mastermind criminal, Raymond ‘Red’ Reddington (James Spader), as the only agent he’ll speak to with the information to catch another person of interest, possible terrorist Ranko Zamani (Jamie Jackson).
