Last year, despite the fact that the first season of Legends did very poorly in the ratings, TNT renewed it for a second season anyway. The producers have given the series a creative overhaul in hopes of attracting more viewers. Will it work or will the changes alienate the viewers they had? Cancelled or renewed for a third season? Stay tuned.
Based on the award-winning book by spy novelist Robert Littell, Legends follows Martin Odum (Sean Bean), an undercover agent who can transform himself into a different person for each case. Others in the cast this season are Winter Ave Zoli, Steve Kazee, Aisling Franciosi, Kelly Overton, Klara Issova, and Ralph Brown. Last season castmember Morris Chestnut will guest star in several episodes.

Exclusive: Ralph Brown (The Blacklist) and Klara Issova (The Chronicles Of Narnia: Prince Caspian) round out the series-regular cast of Legends, joining star Sean Bean for the upcoming second season of TNT’s drama series. Brown will play Terrence Graves, a sophisticated, wry MI6 intelligence officer. But underneath the polished exterior lurks a man both personally and professionally compromised. Issova is Ilyana Crawford, a refugee from war-torn Chechnya. She is smart…...

Hugo (U)
(Martin Scorsese, 2011, Us) Asa Butterfield, Ben Kingsley, Chloë Grace Moretz, Sacha Baron Cohen. 126 mins.
Eyebrows were raised and expectations lowered at the prospect of a Scorsese-made 3D family movie – but now it all makes sense. This is less a kids' romp than a hymn to early cinema – sugar-coated with a junior steampunk adventure revolving around an Parisian orphan and his mystery automaton. It's a satisfyingly lavish affair technically, with a story that's intelligent and heartfelt.
We Have A Pope (PG)
(Nanni Moretti, 2011, Ita/Fra) Nanni Moretti, Michel Piccoli, Jerzy Stuhr. 105 mins.
Moretti's Vatican satire is wry rather than scathing, which will disappoint many. But there's fun to be had as Piccoli's panicked new pope seeks therapy from Moretti's secular psychoanalyst.
Surviving Life (15)
(Jan Svankmajer, 2010, Cze) Václav Helsus, Klára Issová, Zuzana Krónerová. 109 mins.
More light-hearted Freudian comedy, with Monty Python-style cut-out animation, as a middle-aged man prefers his dream world to reality,...

My first exposure to the work of legendary director Jan Svankmajer was his strangely creepy 2000 comedy “Little Otik”, which tells the sensitive story of a childless couple and their relationship with a peculiar root baby. That’s right — a root baby. Since then, I’ve consumed as much of the man’s output as I possibly could, including the man’s underrated 2005 endeavor “Lunacy”. Much to my giddy delight, Twitch has kindly posted the trailer for the filmmaker’s latest effort, the suitably bizarre “Surviving Life”. If you’ve never seen anything by Svankmajer, you might be a little perplexed by this clip, and that’s okay. We pass no judgments here at Beyond Hollywood. Not openly, anyway. Here’s a synopsis to clarify things: Eugene (Václav Helsus) leads a double life – married to Milada, he also dreams of the beautiful Evgenia (Klára Issová). Seeking to perpetuate his dream life,...

I'm gonna go on record here and say that there are two legendary animated filmmakers alive and well, and working today. One of them is Hayao Miyazaki. And the other is master of the surreal, purveyor of cut-out and claymation, Jan Svankmajer. His latest Surviving Life (aka Theory and Practice) will be premiering at the 58th London Film Festival in October. Here's a bit of plot from Lff's website, and below, the trailer!
Eugene (Václav Helsus) leads a double life - married to Milada, he also dreams of the beautiful Evgenia (Klára Issová). Seeking to perpetuate his dream life, he goes to see a psychoanalyst, who attempts to provide an ongoing interpretation of his experiences. On the wall are portraits of Freud and Jung, which become animated, alternately applauding, disapproving or fighting over her interpretations.

That's right, the London Film Festival lineup has just been announced which includes the likes of Black Swan, Neds, Never Let Me Go, Essential Killing, Submarine, and Let Me In, but it also includes the new film from Czech animation genius Jan Svankmajer which premiered at Venice. It's not new ground as it combines live action and stop motion, but as usual, it looks fantastic. The foreign title is "Prezít svuj zivot (teorie a praxe)".
