Many of the beloved Pokémon designs responsible for kickstarting the craze back in the late 90s almost looked completely different.
As part of a nostalgic look back at the franchise’s humble beginnings, YouTube channel DidYouKnowGaming?’s latest video features an old interview with Pokémon Company president Tsunekazu Ishihara, who recalls how prior to the anime series’ first airing, Nintendo of America had pushed for redesigns of several Pokémon, including mascots Pikachu and Charizard due to its view that many of the now-iconic creatures were “too cute.”
Some of these proposals actually made it to the early stages, too, with some having even found their way online in the years since. One of these concepts, which show a wildly different-looking Charmander, Charmeleon and Charizard, can be seen down below.

Earlier this week, The Pokémon Company confirmed that it would be holding a special press conference in Tokyo. The event was to be used as a platform to reveal several new projects in the pipeline for Pokéfans the world over, one of which has turned out to be none other than a Detective Pikachu sequel.
If the announcement presents itself as a little premature – what with the summer blockbuster movie having only just released – that’s because this latest project isn’t a film, but a video game. As confirmed by none other than The Pokémon Company CEO Tsunekazu Ishihara, this particular iteration of the now-famous series is intended to be a direct follow-up to the 3Ds game of the same name released in 2016.

The Nintendo Switch is without a doubt one of the industry’s most popular systems, and it’s not hard to see why.
The console/handheld hybrid has pushed over 32 million units as of December 2018, thanks in no small part to huge exclusives like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and the truly stunning Breath of the Wild. And while the Powers That Be have brought everyone’s favorite pocket monsters to the console already with Pokémon: Let’s Go (our review), no one can deny that there’s still a huge demand for the Switch’s first mainline Pokémon RPG.
But rest assured folks, as it’s coming – and soon, apparently. Taking to Twitter earlier today, The Big N announced that there will be a Pokémon Direct tomorrow, February 27th, at 9am Est. And though they don’t say what’ll be revealed, I think we all...

The console/handheld hybrid has sold more than 32 million units as of December 2018, thanks in no small part to big-name exclusives in the vein of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and the really rather stunning Breath of the Wild. And while the Powers That Be have brought everyone’s favorite pocket monsters to the Switch in the form of Pokémon: Let’s Go (our review), there’s still a tangible demand for the console’s first mainline Pokémon RPG. Pokemon Company’s president Tsunekazu Ishihara announced Tuesday at a Tokyo press conference that their hit mobile game “Pokemon Go” has been downloaded 800 million times.
The free-to-play game has been a runaway hit since its release in summer of 2016. The 800 million figure hints that the game shows no sign of slowing down any time soon, as it’s a rapid increase from the 650 million downloads announced at the Game Developers Conference in March.
“Pokemon Go” has made the Pokemon Company an impressive amount of money through micro-transactions. According to Newzoo, the mobile game earned $470 million Usd in the first 80 days after launch. The title is free to download and play on iOS and Android, but players have the option to buy in-game currency to purchase accessories, like Pokeballs and Lures, with their real-world dollars.
The news comes just after the reveal of two new “Pokemon Let’s Go” titles coming to Switch.

Unsurprisingly, everyone wants Chrono Trigger on Nintendo's Snes Classic Mini...
The Snes Classic Edition's lineup of games is fairly impressive, but it would be impossible to design a lineup of around 20 games that is going to please everyone. Hey, blame Nintendo for releasing a console that boasts arguably the most impressive game library in the history of the industry.
As such, everyone can rattle off the names of a few games they would have like to have seen included with Nintendo's dinky console. Recently, a group of famed Japanese developers did just that.
Famitsu spoke to various Japanese game developers and asked them which title they would like to see included in the Snes Classic Edition (or Super Famicom Mini) that isn't already included with the console. You can read a transcript of the full results here.

The fans have been clamoring for it and Nintendo is preparing to oblige. During the Nintendo Showcase, we had our first official word that a Pokemon RPG is in the works. More information below!
Nintendo's Showcase, today, was flush with exciting trailers and game announcements, but there was one that didn't actually have any footage but generated the most buzz. Nintendo is, in fact, developing a Pokemon game for the Nintendo Switch. I'm not talking about a Pokemon fighting game, like Pokken, I'm talking about a legit RPG, as stated by Tsunekazu Ishihara of The Pokemon Company.
Unfortunately, we likely won't get to play this new Game Freak game until probably late 2018, at the earliest. However, the confirmation of a Nintendo Switch Pokemon game is enough to keep us excited for quite some time. It will even help boost sales of the Nintendo Switch to even greater heights.

The Pokemon Direct has come and gone and with it hopes for Pokemon Stars on the Nintendo Switch. Instead it revealed a recycled title coming to the Nintendo Switch and an updated title staying on the 3Ds.
And the crowd went mild...
That's the general feeling most had when the Pokemon Direct opened showing Pokken Tournament Dx going to the Nintendo Switch. It didn't get any better when they announced Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon on 3Ds. While all these titles are fine in their own right, the idea that we'd get a fully fledged Pokemon game on the Nintendo Switch (Pokemon Stars) caused expectations to soar to new heights and fall to new lows, after the reveal.
Nevertheless, Pokken Tournament Dx will now join the ranks of Nintendo Switch games and will likely find a bigger following than it had on the Wii U. On the flip side of the coin,...

Nintendo Nx, the mysterious new hardware in the bowels of production over at the Big N, may still be a mystery wrapped in an enigma, but that hasn’t stopped developers from across the industry expressed their tempered excitement.
Yves Guillemot, CEO of Ubisoft, is one such advocate, telling IGN that he considers the Nx to be a “fantastic machine” that will offer a fundamentally “different experience from what exists today.” Bold words, of course, but Guillemot’s stature at Ubisoft, a publisher that all but pulled third-party support from the Wii U following pitiful sales, leads us to believe that the Nx could well live up to early expectations.
Per IGN:
“They have built in something that will give us chance to really have a different experience from what exists today,” he said. “That’s what I like – that they come with something new that is adapted to what we actually want now.

The Pokemon Company's boss confirms rumours that the Nintendo Nx is a handheld and home console, and says Pokemon games are coming for it.
While few people ever entertained the thought that there won't be any Pokemon games on the Nx, Pokemon Company boss Tsunekazu Ishihara has put whatever fears did exist in regards to the franchise's future to rest by confirming that The Pokemon Company will indeed be making games for Nintendo's next system.
"The Nx is trying to change the concept of what it means to be a home console device or a handheld device," said Ishihara in a recent interview with The Wall Street Journal. "We will make games for the Nx."
Aside from the confirmation that there will be Pokemon games on the Nx, the most interesting part of Ishihara's statement is that he seems to confirm that the Nx will indeed be a hybrid mobile/home console.

Ubisoft boss Yves Guillemot has praised Nintendo's top-secret Nx console, saying it's "easy to use" and "a different experience"...
Update: Nintendo's top-secret Nx console. Is it really a handheld and home console hybrid? Pokemon Company boss Tsunekazu Ishihara says it is. Are the rumours that it'll be cartridge-based correct? Nintendo isn't saying. All we know for certain for now is that it's out next year, and that third-party developers have pledged at least a certain amount of support for it.
Ubisoft, for example, has said it's developing a Just Dance game for the Nx. That's hardly going to get people running to their local branch of Dixons, but given the disappointing sales of the Wii U, it's at least something. For now, Ubisoft is also making positive noises about the Nx; while the company's CEO Yves Guillemot hasn't been quite as revealing in his statements as Ishihara,...

The rumour started through the broadcaster’s synopsis of Ishihara’s interview, which you can check out below:
“This summer, Ishihara started development on a never before seen game. It’s a new game featuring the very popular character Pikachu in a bold way. There is concern, however, that if it’s bad the long loved character would lose popularity in the blink of an eye.”
At this time, it’s unclear as to what the president will discuss during his appearance on the show.

In this second Pokemon Direct, we hear from Tsunekaz Ishihara, Satoru Iwata, and Junichi Masuda as they reminisce about the history of the Pokemon franchise and talk about new features of the upcoming Pokemon X/Y .
After getting all teary-eyed and nostalgic about the old brick GameBoys with their link cables, they start talking about the evolution of mutiplayer gameplay. The Player Search System will allow people to battle and trade online. Additionally, Pokemon will now be stored in the cloud via the online service "Pokemon Box", although this will require an annual fee. This is how Pokemon from previous games can be transferred to the upcoming generation.
As rumored, a professor in the game will give you one of the original three Pokemon starters--Charmander, Bulbasaur, or Squirtle. These Pokemon, when evolved, will be among those to receive Mega Evolutions . Mega Venusaur looks kinda lame (who picks Bulbasaur anyway?), Charizard gets more draconian,...

Early this morning Nintendo recorded a new Nintendo Direct and it focused on a brand new Pokemon game that's coming to and built specifically for the 3Ds (as many fans have wanted since the handheld released). It's brand new, looks visually updated, and surprisingly isn't named after colors!
My inexplicable love for the Pokemon franchise has been well documented, so I won't belabor the point here. Just know that I'm incredibly excited, and judging by the screens shown of the game so far, I think everyone should be as well.
First off, we knew it would happen at some point, but it looks like GameFreak (the Pokemon developers) have finally run out of colors to name the games off of. Now we're onto letters as the next pair of games are called X & Y. While they didn't announce a detailed release date, the game is set to launch worldwide in October 2013. The other major change?...

In an interview with Japanese publication Famitsu (via Sinobi), Tsunekazu Ishihara (Head of The Pokemon Company) has unveiled that new Pokemon handheld titles are already in the pipeline, hot on the heels of Pokemon Black and White Versions, the downloadable Pokedex 3D for 3Ds and the Japanese release of Pokemon Rumble Blast at the end of this year.
Ishihara hinted that the new titles will ‘surprise’ players in the latter half of 2011 and that they may be connected to both DS and 3Ds systems.
Fans have speculated remakes of the Gameboy Advance classics, Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire Versions (following on from the trend of Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver), whilst a Black and White spin-off (Pokemon ‘Grey’Version, perhaps?) is also hypothesized.
Whether or not such titles will follow so closely on the heels of Black and White remains to be seen. Likelihood is the titles will be franchise spin-offs as opposed to main-series RPG’s,...
