Top of the class: the five best boarding-school movies

5 December 2009 4:10 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

If… (15) Lindsay Anderson, 1968 Starring Malcolm McDowell

Made in the heady days of global unrest and protest, Anderson's boarding-school flick caught the mood of anti-establishment disaffection. Its exotic flourishes – making out with a libidinous waitress; gunning down the faculty with weapons stolen from the cadet force armoury – fuelled the fantasies of rebellious schoolboys everywhere.

Best scene

College House listens in uncomfortable silence as Travis (McDowell) is given a brutal caning by the head whip.

Flirting (15) John Duigan, 1991

Starring Noah Taylor, Thandie Newton

"One thing about boarding school, 24 hours a day, you're surrounded," begins misfit Taylor, stuck in a rural Australian boys' school in 1965. "Either you abandon yourself and become a herd animal, or dig deeper into your head and skulk inside." Taylor finds a different path when he discovers love with Newton from a nearby girls' school.

Best scene

Taylor defends his girlfriend's honour, in the boxing ring against the school's top pugilist. »

Mikael Håfström to direct 'The Rite'

1 April 2009 5:14 PM, PDT | screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news »

Mikael Håfström is set to direct New Line Cinema's "The Rite," an upcoming fact-based thriller based on a nonfiction book by Matt Baglio.

According to Variety, the film follows a young man who joins the Vatican's newly formed Exorcism School, where he soon finds himself facing the devil.

Michael Petroni, whose credits include "Queen of the Damned" and the upcoming "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader," wrote the script.

Håfström also directed "Derailed" (a film I absolutely hated) and "1408" (one I mildly enjoyed). He's currently wrapping up "Shanghai," starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan, John Cusack, David Morse and Franka Potente. »

1408 's Hafstrom to Direct Rite

1 April 2009 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

The box office success of The Haunting in Connecticut , a supernatural tale rooted in reportedly real events, may have some studios dusting off similarly-themed scripts they have sitting on the shelf. One that we never thought we'd hear about again, Last Rite , is on the move at Contrafilm. Producers Beau Flynn, Tripp Vinson and Christy Fletcher have secured Mikael Hafstrom to direct this fact-based flick scripted by Michael Petroni. Hafstrom last directed the Stephen King adaptation 1408 . When the rights were first picked up, the film was original called "The Rite" - the title of the nonfiction book by Matt Baglio upon which it is based. Rite will tell the story of a young man who joins a seminary and is soon recruited into the Vatican's newly formed Exorcism »

Mikael Hafstrom To Direct Last Rite

1 April 2009 1:58 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Mikael Hafstrom sure does love those scary fillums, doesn’t he? The Swedish director of 1408 has turned his attention to all things demonic by signing on to direct Last Rite, a thriller about the Vatican’s Exorcism School.Yes, it may be April Fool’s Day, but according to Matt Baglio’s non-fiction book of the same name, the Exorcism School does exist – and that’s pretty damn… sorry, darn awesome.Sadly, Hafstrom’s new movie won’t be a knockabout comedy, a la Police Academy, as bumbling new recruits get bashed into shape under the watchful eye of Max Von Sydow’s stern commandant. Instead, it will be a horror thriller about a new recruit’s struggle to come to terms with his faith – which he does by, ultimately, facing the Devil. After that, you’d have to say, it’s gotta be all downhill from there.Michael Petroni »

1408's Hafstrom to Administer Last Rite

1 April 2009 1:00 AM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Last Rite has been one of those on-again, off-again projects so it struck me as interesting that it looks like the film is officially "on" now and even has a director attached.

Variety reported that Mikael Hafstrom will be helming Last Rite, which is a supernatural thriller penned by Michael Petroni (Queen of the Damned, The Dangerous Lives of Alter Boys).

Official synopsis:

"Last Rite tells the story of a young man who joins a seminary and is soon recruited into the Vatican's newly formed Exorcism School. There, he confronts the demonic and discovers his true faith by facing the devil."

While I generally dislike PG-13 horror flicks, I rather enjoyed director Hafstrom’s last genre movie, the John Cusack vehicle 1408. I guess that’s why I am actually kind of interested to see what he has to offer with this flick.

It’s still pretty early in the process »

1408 Director Takes on 'Last Rite'

31 March 2009 10:58 PM, PDT | bloody-disgusting.com | See recent Bloody-Disgusting.com news »

Mikael Hafstrom - who I thought did a pretty solid job on 1408 for Dimension Films - is set to direct Last Rite, a fact-based thriller scripted by Michael Petroni. Based on a nonfiction book by Matt Baglio, the film tells the story of a young man who joins a seminary and is soon recruited into the Vatican's newly formed Exorcism School. There, he confronts the demonic and discovers his true faith by facing the devil. Exorcisms seem to be the new cool in Hollywood... someone call me when it's done right. Contrafilm's Beau Flynn and Tripp Vinson will produce with Christy Fletcher. The Swedish director's last film was the ghost story hit "1408." He most recently completed the Phoenix Pictures-produced drama "Shanghai," which the Weinstein Co. releases on Sept. 4. »
