Netflix's adaptation of Mart Crowley's groundbreaking 1968 play The Boys in the Band follows a group of friends who gather for a birthday party that goes emotionally awry one night in New York City. The Ryan Murphy-produced film reunites the cast of the 2018 Broadway revival of the play, including Jim Parsons, Zachary Quinto, and Matt Bomer. Like the play, the film revolves around nine characters whose friendly gathering one night quickly goes to sh*t, centering on themes like homophobia, self-loathing, closeted sexuality, monogamy, and racism. However, the film does have a slightly different ending than the play, even if it leaves viewers with the same open-ended questions.
The film - which was directed by Joe Mantello, who also directed the Broadway revival - opens with a brief introduction sequence for all nine characters. We meet Michael (Parsons), the friend throwing the party for Harold (Quinto) in his apartment,...

There are plenty of hit Broadway productions that are aching to be translated to film. Conversely, there are tons of shows that really have no need for a cinematic adaptation. It’s the ones that fall in between which present a paradox for creatives. Adapt it right and you could have something special. Do it in more of a flawed way and folks will struggle to understand what made he production a success in the first place. The Boys in the Band is one such example of a Broadway translation caught in no man’s land. Strong acting mixes a muddled filmmaking execution to form a flawed yet sporadically compelling new Netflix release. Some may love it. Some may hate it. Most will be left somewhere in between. The movie is an adaptation of the Broadway smash of the same name (as well as the prior motion picture). It’s a drama,...

If the all-star cast of Netflix's The Boys in the Band got you thinking it's about a rowdy, mischievous group of gay friends who spend their nights cackling and poking fun at each other, you're not technically wrong. Starring Jim Parsons, Zachary Quinto, Matt Bomer, Andrew Rannells, Tuc Watkins, Robin de Jesús, Michael Benjamin Washington, Charlie Carver and Brian Hutchison, the new Ryan Murphy-produced movie is an adaptation of Mart Crowley's 1968 play, a depends-who-you-ask controversial piece made into a film in 1970 and later developed into a Tony-winning Broadway production in 2018. The story takes place over the course of one night as Michael (Parsons) hosts a...

The Boys in the Band — directed by Joe Mantello and produced by, among others, Ryan Murphy — isn’t always good, but it’s a good time. The project is a tough prospect, in some ways. The movie adapts Mart Crowley’s groundbreaking 1968 play, an Upper East Side drama whose characters are entirely comprised of gay men, men whose desires and conflicts and forms of expression are inherently their own — whose lives and complications, fully on display here, had up until to that point usually been relegated to the background, if...

Five years ago, Charlie Carver, who appears in the upcoming Netflix film “The Boys in the Band,” was at an Emmy party when a gay man he worked with chastised him three separate times for acting too effeminate.
“I was told that I needed to ‘get it under control’ around people in the business,” Carver says, sharing the story for the first time with Variety.
Later, while Carver was waiting at the valet, he ran into his co-worker again and asked him for clarification. Instead, the man slapped Carver across the face. “It wasn’t playful but intentional, pointed and meant to be instructive. A slap,” says the actor. “I told him that if he ever touched me again, I would name him.”
As upsetting as the night was, Carver, now 32, says, “That was the moment when I said to myself, ‘I can’t do this. I cannot police myself in that way.

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains crucial plot details about Netflix’s The Boys in the Band film
Much has changed in the two years since director Joe Mantello was readying his revival of The Boys in the Band, Mart Crawley’s 1968 landmark of gay theater, for a 2018 Broadway audience. The all-star cast – Jim Parsons, Zachary Quinto, Matt Bomer, Andrew Rannells, Tuc Watkins, Michael Benjamin Washington, Robin de Jesús, Charlie Carver and Brian Hutchison – would go a long way in generating interest, as would the involvement of producer Ryan Murphy, but questions of relevance had dogged Crowley’s pre-Stonewall Boys for years.
To put if bluntly, was Boys in the Band anything more than a wittily crafted souvenir from an era when closets were crowded with terrified, self-loathing gay men? Had decades of the LGBTQ community’s struggles, setbacks and hard-fought victories for acceptance, rights and pride dulled the play’s reputation?...

Producer Ryan Murphy and director Joe Mantello have come not to bury the past but to slavishly recreate it, sort of, with “The Boys in the Band,” a feature film starring the cast that the two assembled for the 2018 revival of Mart Crowley’s groundbreaking play about a group of urban gay frenemies.
“Groundbreaking” is one of the last adjectives one could apply to this ossified remake, which scavenges the surface of William Friedkin’s 1970 film version with all the depth of a magazine layout or a theme party. Whether or not you think Crowley’s very of-its-moment piece still has something to say to audiences of the 21st century, it’s a play that deserves better than this waxwork karaoke.
Michael (Jim Parsons), who grapples with his gay identity via retail therapy and Catholic guilt, throws a birthday party for the acerbic Harold (Zachary Quinto). The guests include the...

The shocking drama and dark camp of Mart Crowley’s play “The Boys in the Band,” which first bowed off-Broadway in 1968, is hard to top. Filmmaker William Friedkin first brought this two-act stage drama about a group of out-gay male friends to the big screen in 1970, giving audiences a peek behind the velvet curtain of homosexual social life. “Terrifying” is a word often ascribed to this play, written before Stonewall and before AIDS, as it exposed the damage and self-loathing gay men felt their in their then-little corner of the world. And, in the 1960s, the play had to speak to all the hidden issues of the time surrounding LGBTQ life.
“The Boys in the Band,” thankfully, doesn’t have to do that anymore. And it doesn’t have to feel terrifying. It’s 1968, and while gay men are largely regarded as an aberration by polite society, the LGBTQ population...

Netflix has dropped the trailer for “The Boys in the Band,” Ryan Murphy’s film adaptation of the 2018 revival of Mart Crowley’s play of the same name.
In the trailer, which you can watch above, a group of nine gay men gather together for a birthday party in 1960s’ NYC. Jim Parsons’ character suggests as a “game” they each call the one person they truly believe they have loved. And well, let’s just say things get really emotional, really quickly.
“The Boys in the Band” stars Parsons, Matt Bomer, Zachary Quinto, Andrew Rannells, Tuc Watkins, Brian Hutchison, Robin de Jesús, Charlie Carver, and Michael Benjamin Washington, the same cast that led the 2018 Broadway revival of the play. Joe Mantello, who directed that stage version, also directs the Netflix adaptation.

Ryan Murphy is working to earn that reported $300 million Netflix shelled out to sign the prolific producer to an overall deal last year, luring him away from his longtime home at 20th Century Fox Television.
At the Time 100 Summit in April, the “American Horror Story” creator said he has 10 projects in the works at the streaming service: three documentaries, four TV shows and three movies.

When Ryan Murphy announced he was adapting the Broadway hit “The Boys in the Band” into a movie for Netflix, it raised a few well-coiffed eyebrows. While Mart Crowley’s seminal 1968 play received a successful Broadway revival last year, cast entirely with out gay actors to boot, material that was once groundbreaking is now considered dated by some. The characters in “Boys” are mostly self-loathing and angry, perhaps not the most relevant story to tell today.
Still, many celebrate it as a pioneering work in the Lgbtq canon, worthy of honoring with a revisit. Murphy, the powerhouse television one-man-brand with a giant overall deal at Netflix, understands the criticisms lobbed at the play — but stands firmly in the latter camp.
“I feel like the world needs more Lgbtq history. It just does,” Murphy told IndieWire during an in-person interview in May. “[‘The Boys in the Band’] is a play that...

Emmy-winning television mastermind Ryan Murphy recently announced that he is set to turn one of this year’s potential Tony contenders, “The Boys in the Band,” into a movie for Netflix. The stage production (which Murphy produced) ran a successful limited run on Broadway last summer. As the nominations announcement approaches, what could this mean for its chances in Best Play Revival?
“The Boys in the Band” centers on a group of gay men who gather in an NYC apartment for a friend’s birthday party. After the drinks are poured and the music is turned up the fault lines beneath their friendships are exposed, as well as the self-inflicted heartache that threatens their solidarity. When Mart Crowley’s play originally premiered Off-Broadway in 1968, it helped spark a revolution by putting gay men’s lives onstage unapologetically and without judgement in a world that was not yet willing to fully accept them.

How much baggage does The Boys in the Band, Mart Crowley’s 50-year-old groundbreaker, tote onto its first-ever Broadway stage? How many memories of early Off Broadway notoriety, dismissive reappraisals and late-in-the-day charges of antiquated self-loathing?
Oh Mary, don’t ask.
Or actually, do. Because director Joe Mantello, a production team that includes Ryan Murphy and Scott Rudin, and a cast led by the full-of-surprises Jim Parsons as well as Zachary Quinto and Matt Bomer, have revived and revitalized a play that for all its imperfections throws a party at the Booth Theatre that shouldn’t be missed.
And not just as some musty, the-way-we-were study guide. After all the lacerating barbs – what shocks most today might be the depiction of horrendously casual racism – we’re reminded that Crowley wrote a fierce and funny drama about the damage done when society’s hate works its way into the souls of its outcasts.

Festivities are certainly in order for this superbly mounted 50th anniversary production of “The Boys in the Band,” Mart Crowley’s breakthrough 1968 play about Manhattan gay life — still largely underground in an era that preceded both Stonewall and AIDS. Not that everyone in the play seems up for a party. “If there’s one thing I’m not ready for, it’s five screaming queens singing ‘Happy Birthday,’” declares Michael, in Jim Parsons’ endearing performance as the heart and soul of the play’s rambunctious birthday gathering.
Well, we beg to disagree. If there’s one thing this staid theater season is more than ready for, it’s a motley crew of gay friends getting together to celebrate. Harold, the insouciant birthday boy, takes his sweet time arriving at the festivities; but in this staging — directed by Joe Mantello and produced by a team that includes TV titan Ryan Murphy...

The gorgeous, deceptively calming bedroom set that frames Three Tall Women at Broadway’s John Golden Theatre loses none of its beauty with the lights way up and the house empty.
Mantello, one of the stage’s premiere directors currently represented on Broadway with two new productions – this one and the soon-to-open The Boys in the Band at the Booth Theatre, both joining the forever-open Wicked – is explaining how Miriam Buether’s impeccably appointed set works. How it expands, or shape-shifts, from the real-world elegance of a wealthy woman’s boudoir to, in the play’s second half, something altogether less of this earth, doubling into its own doppelganger and becoming home to the past and present, the now and the remembered.

Regrets (from Manhattan Theatre Club at City Center's Stage I through April 29)A postcard from the edge of Wikipedia, the young British playwright Matt Charman’s Regrets is a tidy little wax museum of tropes and types from the American fifties. The mysterious young Caleb (Ansel Elgort) is waiting out the six weeks of Nevada residency required for a “Reno divorce” in a remote campground colonized by oddballs and castaways, most of them male: Secretive, war-wounded writer Ben (Brian Hutchison) is the leader, lovelorn Queens weakling Alvin (Richard Topol) is the nebbish, and Gerald (Lucas Caleb Rooney) is the resident racist, sexist meathead. Adriane Lenox drops in as the campground’s black proprietor (and shadow-owner, in defiance of separate-but-unequal state law), and so does the anime-eyed Gilmore Girls vet Alexis Bledel as a would-be prostitute looking for any ticket out of town. I Love Lucy is discussed, “the war” and...
