Last year, Clear Channel Communications made a high-profile move to put on its own upfront event during the yearly television upfront season in New York, featuring such disparate personalities as Rush Limbaugh and Jewel. But on Tuesday, the media firm will host a much lower-key conference in Manhattan for analysts only that is closed to the press and the general public. Asked about the switch in approach, sales chief Don Howe said the company simply "didn't feel it was necessary" to put on an upfront event again. Howe is president of the San Antonio-based firm's Advantage unit, which sells advertising packages across Clear Channel's divisions. Certainly, the company has had some distractions of late. This month, president and chief operating officer Mark Mays stepped in as interim CEO to replace his father, Lowry Mays, while the elder Mays recovers from brain surgery. Another topic that has put Clear Channel in the spotlight in an unwelcome way is the indecency issue: It recently paid two large fines for programs broadcast by hosts Bubba the Love Sponge and Howard Stern. Both popular jocks were quickly dropped from Clear Channel's roster.
