If you want to win an Oscar for Best Costume Design, it’s best to pick a project for which you can create frilly dresses from a bygone era. Since its introduction at the 1948 Academy Awards, this category has favored period pictures, including the 2021 winner “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” Voters love to reward the creative forces behind such films, especially those that are about the aristocracy including recent champs “Marie Antoinette” (2007), “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” (2008), “The Duchess” (2009), “The Young Victoria” (2010), and “Anna Karenina” (2013). (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2023 Oscars Best Costume Design predictions.)
By the way, none of those films even competed for Best Picture. Indeed, only 20 of the most recent 73 Best Picture champs also won this award. Among these was “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2004). If there’s a prime example of a franchise getting better with every movie, Kenneth Branagh’s Agatha Christie universe is a prime example. Starting in 2017 with the generic “Murder on the Orient Express,” it’s sequel, the 2022 feature “Death on the Nile” was rollicking fun if only for how horny it was in its themes and presentation. But, surprisingly, Branagh followed that up with a dark and somber haunted house story, “A Haunting in Venice” that, if anything, showcases both his impassioned love for Christie’s work and ability to tell a truly spooky film.
Acclaimed detective Hercule Poirot (Branagh) is in a bit of a slump. It’s 1947 and Poirot spends his days avoiding mysteries and eating cake. But things change when his old friend Ariadne Oliver (Tina Fey) comes calling, asking Poirot to witness a seance led by psychic medium Joyce Reynolds (Michelle Yeoh). Reynolds hopes to...

The nominations for the Costume Designers Guild Awards will be released on Wednesday, recognizing the achievements of the artisans that created some of the most memorable outfits and clothing designs of the year. Following the 10-month eligibility window, the community of over 1,200 members separates the film categories into three groups — contemporary, period and sci-fi/fantasy.
The distinctions between contemporary and period tend to get blurred, especially with modern subjects like Princess Diana in “Spencer” and Venus and Serena Williams in “King Richard” among the selections. However, per the CDG rules, “any entry with at least 51% of all costumes existing in a historical era greater than 25 years [on or before December 31, 1995] from the current entry year will be considered a period entry.”
That puts Jacqueline Durran (“Spencer”) and Sharen Davis (“King Richard”) into the period film field, where it’s indisputably the most competitive. Three of the five nominees from CDG typically translate to an...

Last year, Chloe Zhao made the leap from independent films to Marvel with “Eternals,” which is now streaming on Disney Plus.
For Zhao to bring the story to life, one person who was important to her journey was visual effects supervisor Stephane Ceretti. Before Zhao had even shot the Oscar-winning “Nomadland,” Zhao had met Ceretti.
For “The Eternals,” she continued shooting on practical locations, working in natural light and utilizing the magic hour instead of being in a studio working against green and blue screen. Zhao explains, “Planet Earth is such a big part of the emotional arc of the story that we wanted to go out there and capture it.”
Having seen “The Rider,” Ceretti understood the director’s love for nature and light. “It felt a shame to not to push into this. When you’re on a set, you’re limited with space and it becomes restrictive.

Looking back on this still-young century makes clear that 2007 was a major time for cinematic happenings — and, on the basis of this retrospective, one we’re not quite through with ten years on. One’s mind might quickly flash to a few big titles that will be represented, but it is the plurality of both festival and theatrical premieres that truly surprises: late works from old masters, debuts from filmmakers who’ve since become some of our most-respected artists, and mid-career turning points that didn’t necessarily announce themselves as such at the time. Join us as an assembled team, many of whom were coming of age that year, takes on their favorites.

While comic book purists are generally hard to please, the comic-inspired costume that Paul Rudd wears in the upcoming Ant-Man seems to be controversy-free. However, some notable critics regarding the unitards.s utilitarian value happen to be the people who created the getup. Apparently, a gaping, potentially fatal flaw was left in the design for the sake of aesthetics for the would-be Avengers team member. So what happened? In an interview featured in the latest issue of Empire, costume designers Sammy Sheldon and Ivo Coveney discuss the loosely-based logistics behind the Ant-Man suit worn by Rudd.s Scott Lang. Adhering to realism in one sense, the suit is designed to be self-contained, since oxygen molecules would be too large to breathe for a shrunken superhero. However, that aspect also takes form with two crucial cables jutting out the side of his helmet. As Coveney comments: We had a long discussion...

Costume designers Sammy Sheldon and Ivo Coveney revealed a few new tidbits of information about Paul Rudd's Ant-Man suit in the latest issue of Empire. The duo told the magazine that they were still working on the costume during filming for the Marvel movie, and Sheldon went on to explain why Scott Lang needs to wear a helmet as Ant-Man. When you shrink, the molecules in the air are too big for your lungs. He has to be fully contained or he'd die. Scott Lang's...

Suit designers Sammy Sheldon and Ivo Coveney have been on board Ant-Man since Edgar Wright was attached to direct, and it's revealed in the latest issue of Empire Magazine that they were still working on the suit during shooting. Why exactly does Scott Lang need to wear that helmet though? "When you shrink, the molecules in the air are too big for your lungs," Sheldon explains. "He has to be fully contained or he'd die." That means we can probably count out seeing a tiny Paul Rudd running around the place then as the shrinking action will clearly be restricted to when he's in the suit. As a result, it's probably best to forget this scene being recreated in the McU! There's still no word on whether or not Pym Particles are going to make it into Ant-Man, but the magazine notes that "mysterious chemicals" are sent around Scott's body via tubing.

The 2015 BAFTA Awards have been revealed and if you're of the group that believes they hold any kind of influence over the Oscars or serve as any kind of predictor, well, you may be moving Boyhood back to the top line of your Best Picture and Director predictions as Richard Linklater's twelve-year project took home three wins including Best Picture, Director and Supporting Actress, though it was The Grand Budapest Hotel, which lead the nomination field with 11 noms, that lead all winners taking home five awards, all below the line outside of the win for Best Original Screenplay. Personally I'm not ready to move Birdman below Boyhood in either Picture or Director as it only took home one award, Best Cinematography for Emmanuel Lubezki, though one interesting category to keep an eye on is Best Actor at the Oscars as the precursors suggest it will be Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything...

The 2015 Ee BAFTA Awards were handed out in London Sunday night and while the broadcast aired hours later in the United States, it didn't stop us from chronicling the twists and turns of a show often seen as a bellwether for the Academy Awards. It took home only three BAFTAs, but "Boyhood" was the biggest winner of the night as it won Best Film and Richard Linklater earned Director honors. "The Grand Budapest Hotel" took home five statues including Original Screenplay for Wes Anderson, Production Design, Costumes, Original Music and Make Up & Hair. "Whiplash" earned three BAFTAs including J.K. Simmons for Supporting Actor, Editing and a somewhat surprising win in Sound. Expected Oscar winners Julianne Moore took Leading Actress and Patricia Arquette took Supporting Actress. Eddie Redmayne earned a key win over rival Michael Keaton by claiming the Lead Actor BAFTA for "The Theory of Everything." The latter also won...

Over the past three and a half months, we have previewed the races in all Oscar categories and spoken with many of the leading contenders. For the ninth year here at Tech Support, it's now time to put all of that aside and put forward final predictions. Which craftsmen and craftswomen will be cited by their peers on Thursday? Best Cinematography Emmanuel Lubezki looks in fantastic position to earn his second straight statuette for his very, very long takes on "Bidman." Robert Yeoman and Dick Pope have earned guild, Bfca and BAFTA nods for their gorgeous period work that blurred the line between camera work and the painted and crafted arts on "The Grand Budapest Hotel" and "Mr. Turner" respectively. The former will likely rack up a host of nods while this is a perfect chance to recognize Pope’s collaborations with Leigh. They’re in good shape. Roger Deakins missed a BAFTA nod,...

Last night the 2015 BAFTA award nominations were announced with The Grand Budapest Hotel leading the field with 11 nominations and Birdman and The Theory of Everything not too far behind with ten nominations each. But as much as the talk will be of who got nominated, the fact Ava DuVernay's Selma went home without a single nomination will certainly have people wondering about its Oscar chances. Well, don't worry, it's getting nominated, it just won't win. However, the one film that does seem to be truly in trouble (despite Angelina Jolie meeting the Pope) is Unbroken, which also didn't receive a single nomination. Just yesterday I moved Unbroken out of the list of my Best Picture predictions and it seems that may have been the right move. Other intriguing developments include no nomination for The Imitation Game director Morten Tyldum. The film earned nine nominations, but director wasn't one of them,...

Ahead of the 72nd annual Golden Globes, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts announced the nominees for the 68th British Academy Film Awards (a.k.a. the BAFTAs) on Friday morning. Leading the pack is The Grand Budapest Hotel with 11 nominations.
The recognition for Wes Anderson’s comedy comes as a surprise since the film has only managed to pick up a handful of nominations in the U.S., including Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy and Best Director at the Golden Globes, which airs live on Sunday, Jan. 11.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has just finished announcing their nominations for best achievement in film for 2014, with Wes Anderson’s quirky comedy The Grand Budapest Hotel leading the pack with 11 nominations. Not far behind are Birdman and The Theory of Everything with ten nods apiece. All three films have earned nods in many of the same top categories, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, and in their respective Best Screenplay categories.
Some may find it surprising that the most lauded film of the year, Richard Linklater’s Boyhood, only made a showing with five nominations, but they were all in top categories (Film, Director, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, and Original Screenplay). However, it is a little shocking that no nod for editing was included (and that’s with six nominees already in the category due to a tie), as this is usually considered a...

Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel, a film that debuted almost exactly a year ago in Berlin, scored 11 nominations from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts this morning. That puts the Fox Searchlight film in the lead while the studio division’s own Birdman is perched in 10 categories. Also scoring 10 BAFTA nods is The Theory Of Everything, followed by The Imitation Game with nine, Boyhood and Whiplash with five, and Mr Turner, Nightcrawler and Interstellar with four. Vying for Best Film are Birdman, Boyhood, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Imitation Game and The Theory Of Everything. The BAFTAs will be held on February 8 at London’s Royal Opera House. “Scott, I’ve been watching you for a while now. You’re different. Now, don’t let anyone tell you that you have nothing to offer.” Ant-Man may feature a superhero who can shrink to microscopic sizes, but that unique ability could expand Marvel’s cinematic universe in a big way. Marvel has released the first trailer for Ant-Man, featuring a lot of screen time for Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas, while also teasing an impressive supporting cast.
Press Release – “Set for release in the United States on July 17, 2015, the film is directed by Peyton Reed (“Bring it On,” “The Break-Up”) and stars Paul Rudd (“I Love You Man,” “Role Models”) as Scott Lang aka Ant-Man, and Michael Douglas (“Behind The Candelabra,” “Wall Street”) as his mentor Dr. Hank Pym and Evangeline Lilly (“The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug,” “Lost”) as Hope Van Dyne, daughter of Hank Pym.

The Costume Designers Guild joined the guild chorus Wednesday morning with a list of nominees across three categories: contemporary, period and fantasy designs. On the list, and finally joining the guild party, is "Selma" from legendary outfitter Ruth E. Carter. It's the first guild mention for the film so far and obviously a warranted one. Carter was joined on the period side by "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "The Imitation Game," "Inherent Vice" (yay!) and "The Theory of Everything." Meanwhile, I'm trying to figure out what makes "Interstellar" a contemporary film rather than a fantasy film (which is how the art directors classified it). Either way, I'm sure the team is happy to be included. I can't believe, though, that "Mr. Turner" has been excluded from both this list and the art directors'. Though it feels like this kind of thing has happened before, only to be righted by the Academy.

With "The Imitation Game," costume designer Sammy Sheldon Differ bucked tradition by trading in the earthy color tones often employed in films set during the 1940s for a richer pallet. "Some of the research I did when I first met [director] Morten Tyldum struck me that actually things don't have to be that muted," she says in our video interview (watch below). "I found a lot of color photographs from the period that had much more vibrant color than people would imagine." The story revolves around Alan Turing, the brilliant mathematician who successfully broke the Nazi Enigma code during World War II. Turing, as portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch, is a reserved, unsociable individual, something Differ helped convey in her costumes. "He – as a character in the film, and I think in reality – didn't really care much about clothing. Anything that he put on ... is kind of calculated as much as you...

Batman has The Joker. Thor has Loki. Superman has Lex Luthor. Every hero needs a villain, and in Marvel’s upcoming film, Ant-Man, the opposition to the titular microscopic protagonist played by Paul Rudd is fittingly coined Yellowjacket. With fans waiting for the film’s first trailer to debut in the near future, new banner artwork has been unveiled to hold us over, offering the first look at the main antagonist.
As Marvel announced during their Hall H Comic-Con panel, Yellowjacket, aka Darren Cross, will be played by Corey Stoll (The Strain, This Is Where I Leave You, Midnight in Paris). "Clothes don't make the man?" That rule certainly doesn't hold true in the movies. Dress can say a lot about characters, their class, their self-image, their self-consciousness, the period and place in which they live, the story they're living and how a director wishes an audience to perceive them. Fortunately, the Academy's Costume Design branch recognizes this, as it consistently proves itself to be one of the most original sects of the organization, not overtly swayed by a film's overall perception. Every year, films that are critically maligned and/or have no other nominations tend to score here and the overall state of the Best Picture race tends to play only a peripheral role. Nevertheless, trends can be noted. Period pieces almost always take a majority of the nominations, frequently all five. Glamor is also awarded frequently. There are also great designers (such as Sandy Powell, Milena Canonero and Colleen Atwood...

Yesterday marked the first day of principal photography for Ant-Man. If I’m to be honest, I’m still a bit bummed that Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish have left the project. I think their take on the Marvel Universe could have been one akin to James Gunn’s approach to Guardians of the Galaxy. Alas, we are still getting an Ant-Man film and the casting is pretty great. We also have a look at Paul Rudd as Scott Lang Aka Ant-Man.

The writer and director of Kick-Ass 2 chats to us about its making, and getting a 15 certificate in the UK...
Nb: This interview contains a bit of swearing.
It’s after eight on an autumn evening at Pinewood Studios, and another hard day’s filming has just finished on the set of Kick-Ass 2. As the dozens of extras exit the sound stage, we take a look around at the oppulent space around us for the first time; this is the lair of Christopher Mintz-Plasse’s villain, and as you might expect from a young, slightly sociopathic comic book villain, it’s packed full of expensive cars, arcade machines, plush furniture, a bar, and somewhat incongruously (if you haven’t read Mark Millar’s source comic), there’s a gigantic water tank with a dead shark in it.

One of the keenest pleasures of "X-Men: First Class" was seeing how Matthew Vaughn treated the styles of the '60s while also making a heightened-reality X-Men movie. I thought they walked the line very carefully, and the costume design work by the great Sammy Sheldon was immaculate and often very cheeky. Bryan Singer has been tweeting all sorts of things from the set of "X-Men: Days Of Future Past" so far, and they're still just gearing up. I'm glad to see they didn't just jump right to shaving James McAvoy's head and that, if anything, Xavier's looking a little shaggier this...

Look, I'm as excited as anyone to see the old gang getting back together — especially if that means returns from Patrick Stewart, Famke Janssen and the like. But black leather is not on the list of things I miss about the old "X-Men" movies.
Take a look at the costumes of old…
…versus the costumes of "First Class," designed by Sammy Sheldon.
The blue-and-gold uniforms of "First Class" aren't perfect, but they're closer to what we're used to in the "X-Men" comic books. Beyond that, the black leather of "X-Men" movies past just looks dated.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences brings you the Oscars (yep, that's why they're called Academy Awards), and on Friday, the organization announced that it was prepared to invite 176 new folks to its fold.
In a list posted on its website, the Academy deemed Matthew McConaughey, Jean Dujardin, Terrence Malick, Jonah Hill, Berenice Bejo, Jessica Chastain, Octavia Spencer and a host of other film luminaries worthy of inclusion in its nearly 6,000-member army.
The Academy has drawn the ire of critics who bemoan its overwhelmingly male, white population. A Los Angeles Times investigation found that of all Academy members, 94 percent are Caucasian and 77 percent are male. A mere 2 percent are black, with Latinos constituting an even smaller portion. Only 14 percent of members are under the age of 50.
Full members of the Academy select and vote on Oscars nominees. The organization was started in 1927 and is now governed by a 43-person board.
