ITV has provided a timeline of how it responded to rumors of This Morning presenter Phillip Schofield’s relationship with a younger runner three years before the story burst into the public domain.
The broadcaster gave evidence to UK Parliament’s Culture, Media and Sport Committee on Wednesday morning, with CEO Carolyn McCall saying she welcomed the opportunity to put right “misinformation” about a scandal that has dominated headlines in Britain.
Schofield, one of the UK’s best-known presenters, stepped down as the host of This Morning last month and later admitted to having a relationship with a younger runner, referred to as Person X in ITV’s evidence to lawmakers.
The relationship was the source of rampant speculation at ITV and there have been questions about how senior managers could not have known about Schofield’s potential abuse of power.

ITV boss Carolyn McCall has said “no evidence” was brought to her and her team during Phillip Schofield’s affair with a much younger runner as she indicated the relationship was “deeply inappropriate.”
Appearing in front of the Culture, Media and Sport Committee (Cmsc) this morning, McCall said “we had no legal reason to go any further” with informal investigations into the years-long rumors of the affair between the former This Morning host and a runner, who is being referred to as Person X.
“We had no legal reason to go any further and if we had a reason then we would have done a formal investigation,” she said. “It’s not in our interest in any way not to investigate anything that we know has evidence to support it.”

Bad Week For ITV Carolyn McCall and Phillip Schofield
Abuse of power?: Anyone at ITV who thought the Phillip Schofield drama would all blow over quickly was living in dreamland. Late last Friday afternoon, just as we were all putting down our pens for the Bank Holiday weekend, the man who had just left This Morning in a hurry after two decades on the sofa used a lengthy mea culpa to confirm what so many had believed to be a rumor for so many years – that he had had an affair with a much younger colleague during his lengthy stint on the daytime stalwart. Media eyes had already been trained on This Morning and Schofield’s public-not-public spat with former co-host Holly Willoughby...

ITV boss Carolyn McCall will face a grilling from the UK’s influential Culture, Media and Sport Committee (Cms) next week over the Phillip Schofield scandal.
McCall will appear on Wednesday to discuss “fundamental issues about safeguarding and complaint handling both at ITV and more widely across the media,” raised by Schofield’s exit.
McCall will appear in front of the committee one day after ITV policy boss Magnus Brooke, who will use a separate session to discuss the upcoming Media Bill, which was planned prior to Schofield’s departure and the ensuing fallout.
The CEO’s summons comes a day after ITV revealed it had hired an external lawyer to “establish the facts” over Schofield and This Morning. McCall then wrote to Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer, Ofcom boss Melanie Dawes and Cms Committee Chair Caroline Dinenage to clarify “inaccuracy in the reporting” of the Schofield saga. Back in February 2020, Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes, the married couple who on Fridays presented long-running British morning magazine show This Morning, were the first to hug co-presenter Phillip Schofield live on air after he came out as gay to viewers, with the support of his co-presenter Holly Willoughby, all pictured.
Three years later and it’s a very different story, with Holmes blasting Schofield on social media, calling him “delusional” for claiming there to be no toxicity behind the scenes of ITV’s most important daytime show.
The ping-pong of conflicting accounts has been keeping entertainment journalists in the UK busy since Friday May 12, when Schofield stepped down from his role as the program’s lead presenter after 21 years at the helm. At the time, a rumored broken friendship with Willoughby was commonly cited as the reason, with ITV bosses praising him and saying he would continue to host other shows on the channel.

Rylan Clark has said that he can count his celebrity friends “on one hand”.
Appearing on Joe Lycett’s live Channel 4 show Late Night Lycett on Friday (7 April), Clark was asked by comedian Lycett to name his famous friends.
Admitting that he could “count them on one hand”, Clark listed Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes, as well as Claire Richards from Steps.
“They’re my little nook,” he said.
Lycett responded by joking that his celebrity fans could be counted on 10 fingers, one for each of the 10 members of the band Blazin’ Squad. To demonstrate this, he held up a prop hand with five extra fingers stuck onto the palm.
Clark has been vocal in the past about his love of Langsford and Holmes, who he worked with on This Morning.

An anthem written by Andrew Lloyd Webber is one of 12 new pieces of music commissioned by King Charles for his coronation.
Lloyd Webber said he was “incredibly honoured” to have been given the opportunity to compose a new number. “My anthem includes words slightly adapted from Psalm 98. I have scored it for the Westminster Abbey choir and organ, the ceremonial brass and orchestra.”
The maestro also said he hoped the anthem “reflects this joyous occasion” when the new king is crowned.
Lloyd Webber, 74, was among those who travelled to Buckingham Palace to pay respects to Queen Elizabeth II, after her death in September last year.
In a tribute posted to Twitter, he honoured the queen as “the most extraordinary ambassador” and thanked her for “all she has done”.
King Charles’s coronation is scheduled to be held on 6 May, and he has selected the musical programme for the ceremony at Westminster Abbey.

Eamonn Holmes has expressed his frustration about his treatment in the media landscape as a “white man in his sixties” in a new interview.
The broadcaster, who is an anchor on the Gb News weekday morning programme Breakfast with Eamonn and Isabel, reflected on moments of his career in an episode of the podcast How to Be 60 with Kaye Adams.
Speaking about his exit from his Radio 5 programme in 2009, Holmes, 63, claimed that while his listenership ratings were “excellent”, an executive told him that the show was “attracting the wrong type of people”, and that they were pursuing a younger audience.
“You’re attracting older people, and we don’t want that,” Holmes claims he was told during a meeting with a production boss.
He continued his story by saying that he ended the meeting in an explicit fashion.

ITV is reportedly set to revive the popular game show Deal or No Deal.
The UK series, which originally aired from 2005 to 2016, was hosted by Noel Edmonds.
In the show, contestants had to choose from a selection of 22 boxes, each of which contain different cash amounts ranging from 1p to £250,000.
“The Banker” then offers them cash in exchange for what’s in their sealed box, with the offer fluctuating as the additional boxes are opened one by one.
ITV is said to have commissioned a reboot of the series, which originally aired on Channel 4.
Edmonds, however, will not feature in this new iteration. Instead, Britain’s Got More Talent presenter Stephen Mulhern will reportedly be assuming the role of host.
The 45-year-old TV personality is also a presenter on Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway for the same channel, as well as game shows In For a Penny and Catchphrase.

The subject came up during a discussion about Shakira’s recent “diss track” aimed at the singer’s ex, Gerard Pique.

The Traitors contestant Amanda Lovett has issued an apology after appearing on Gb News last week.
The 54-year-old appeared on the channel alongside her The Traitors co-star Kieran Tompsett, and posed for a photo with presenters Tatiana Sanchez and Calvin Robinson.
Many people criticised Lovett for posing with Robinson, who has previously been called out for his stance on LGBTQ+ issues.
“I just need to apologise to my new family,” Lovett wrote in her apology on Twitter. “I am so annoyed with my agent, I had no idea what the news channel was about.
“I’m absolutely disgusted to have sat next to a person that doesn’t believe in diversity, equality and being yourself. This will never happen again.”
The Independent has contacted Gb News for comment.
In November 2022, Robinson delivered a monologue on same-sex marriages, where he said: “To me, a marriage needs a bride and groom, anything else is not holy matrimony.

Jim Parsons has not entirely ruled out a spin-off series based on his character in The Big Bang Theory.
The actor, 49, played Sheldon for the entirety of the hit sitcom, which came to an end after 12 seasons in 2019.
It was Parsons’ decision to leave the sitcom that led to its eventual conclusion. He previously said he was ready “to get out of the security of the show to fully find out what was next for me”.
After the series ended, a spin-off titled Young Sheldon aired in 2017. In it, Iain Armitage plays a younger iteration of Parsons’ character.
Young Sheldon has proven successful, with its fifth series coming to an end in May this year. The show has already been renewed for another two seasons by CBS.

Viewers are sharing their well wishes after Eamonn Holmes says parts of his post-injury recovery have been “soul destroying”.
In November, the Gb News broadcaster, 63, was forced to take a break from his presenting role after he fractured his shoulder. The injury came not long after he announced that his mother had died.
Holmes had been recovering from a major back operation at home when he fell down the stairs, resulting in the shoulder injury.
He previously told fans that it was a “massive setback” in his recovery from surgery and described it as a “hellish few weeks”.
On Wednesday (28 December), Holmes gave his Twitter followers an update on his health.
“Worked hard at my physio this morning. Very tiring but I’ve now sat on my backside for five hours and feel bad about doing nothing,” he wrote.
“Lack of mobility & depending on others stops me doing really simple things.

The creator of a widely shared petition calling for ITV to “axe” This Morning presenters Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield has shared an update.
Schofield and Willoughby prompted a substantial public backlash when Queen Elizabeth II was lying in state, after they were given a separate access line for media.
ITV viewers complained that the pair had “skipped” the queue to see the queen’s coffin. The queue led to people waiting for up to 14 hours to get in.
At the time of writing, nearly 75,000 people have signed the petition calling for Willoughby and Schofield to be taken off air.
The petition’s creator shared an update on the original Change.org post.

Rylan Clark has said that a visit from Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford when he was in hospital due to his depression proved to be a “wake-up call”.
Following his divorce from his former husband last year, the presenter took five months off work during which he struggled with depression and, at his lowest point, attempted suicide.
In an extract from his forthcoming memoir Ten: The Decade That Changed My Future published in The Sun, Clark said that following his suicide attempt, he asked to be admitted to a private mental health hospital.
After spending a week in the facility, he returned to live at his mum’s house for three months, but went back into hospital following a “spell of bad thoughts”.

Richard Ayoade and the cast of Have I Got News For You have ripped into the “national scandal” surrounding the alleged This Morning queue jump.
Presenters Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield were accused of “skipping the queue” to see the Queen’s coffin lying in state before her funeral on Monday (19 September) while filming for This Morning.
Willoughby and Schofield denied the accusations, saying that they would “never jump a queue”.
At the time of writing, nearly 70,000 people have signed a petition calling on ITV to “axe” the presenters over the alleged queue-jumping.
During Friday (23 September) night’s episode of Hignfy, host Ayoade joked that the “national scandal” was “the biggest thing that’s happened” this week.
“ITV’s Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield… apparently just appeared in Westminster Hall on Sunday without having spent the previous 36 hours queueing,” Ayoade said.
“Just appeared? Like a haunting?” comedian Roisin Conaty asked.

Mel B made a dig at Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield over accusations that they jumped the queue to pay their respects to Queen Elizabeth II.
While being interviewed onGood Morning Britain about her MBE with show hosts Susanna Reid and Ben Shephard, Mel B brought up how Reid had queued for seven hours to see the Queen’s coffin.
“I have so much respect for you” the former Spice Girl said.
“It felt like a pilgrimage. It was an honour to be with all the other people in the queue,” Reid replied.
“No queue jumping for you,” said Mel B joked, appearing to refer to the accusation that Willoughby and Schofield skipped the queue, which had wait times of up to 24 hours, to Westminster Hall.

‘We would never jump a queue’: Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby address furore on This Morning
Holly Willoughby has said that she and Phillip Schofield “would never jump a queue” as she addressed the public backlash to their visit to see Queen Elizabeth II lying-in-state.
Last week, the This Morning presenters appeared inside Westminster Hall to visit the Queen’s coffin before her funeral on Monday (19 September).
Having been given access to a separate line for media while thousands of mourners waited for hours, the pair were accused of “skipping the queue”.
ITV denied this allegation, however, with the producers releasing a statement reading: “They did not jump the queue, have VIP access or file past the Queen lying in state – but instead were there in a professional capacity as part of the world’s media to report on the event.”
As the ITV daytime programme returned on Tuesday (20 September), a compilation was shown of the 11 days since the monarch’s death and This Morning’s subsequent coverage.

Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank are set to tie the knot on Oct. 12 in a ceremony that is shaping up to be just as fabulous as Prince Harry's wedding to Meghan Markle. Much like the first royal wedding of the year, Eugenie's ceremony will take place at Windsor Castle, with royals and celebrities alike set to be in attendance.
Just like Prince Harry, Eugenie will be including Prince George and Princess Charlotte in her wedding party, but will she also follow in her cousin's footsteps and allow her wedding to be televised? On Tuesday, Oct. 2, ITV News confirmed that Eugenie's big day will be broadcast on ITV as part of a special edition of This Morning from Windsor, hosted by husband-and-wife team Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford. Starting at 11 a.m., viewers can tune in to the ceremony.
ITV scooped up the rights to air the wedding after the BBC reportedly passed.

Gangster, killer, Aragorn ... Mortensen is not known for his comedy. But in new film Captain Fantastic, his grizzled deadpan is the funniest thing in a very funny film. But get him on to politics and prima donna colleagues, and he is deadly serious
Viggo Mortensen has just been on This Morning. Before his slot on the breakfast show, the actor sat backstage watching hosts Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford present an item about children crying on planes. Feeling playful, he began his interview by saying he liked to scream on planes himself. Kids, he said, asked him to be quiet. There was a dilated moment of live TV silence. Eventually, the uncertain laughter of Holmes filled the studio. “But it’s Ok,” Mortensen went on, “because I always wear a helmet when I fly.”

Eamonn Holmes updated his will before his recent double hip replacement operation. The TV presenter and his 'This Morning' co-star wife Ruth Langsford were both fearful of him undergoing the operation and worried that he might not survive, although Ruth says she logically knows the risk was miniscule. She told Best magazine: ''We never voiced the fear of him not coming round from the anaesthetic, but we were both thinking it. But, logically, the risk is miniscule. ''We set up a meeting just before Christmas and suddenly it seemed very poignant. To be sitting there, saying things like, 'So, Eamonn, if you...
