We salute the 10th anniversary of Matthew Vaughn's wonderful Stardust...
“A philosopher once asked, 'Are we human because we gaze at the stars, or do we gaze at them because we are human?' Pointless, really. Do the stars gaze back? Now, that's a question.”
Comic book movies are Matthew Vaughn's speciality. Between Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class and the Kingsman franchise, he's been a constant and eclectic presence as these films have boomed, and if reports are to be believed, his next film could be about either Flash Gordon or Superman.
But going back even further than Mark Millar or Marvel, Vaughn's first comic book movie was his adaptation of Neil Gaiman's Stardust, which arrived in UK cinemas ten years ago this week. Before it was published as a novel in 1999, Gaiman conceived the postmodern fairy tale as a 'prestige' comic; the four-issue mini-series...

It's funny, it's moving, it's brilliant: we look back at Brassed Off, starring the late, great Pete Postlethwaite...
This article contains spoilers for Brassed Off and The Full Monty.
“If this lot were seals or whales, you'd all be up in bloody arms. But they're not, are they? No, no they're not. They're just ordinary common-or-garden honest, decent human beings. And not one of them with an ounce of bloody hope left”. – Danny, Brassed Off
One of the things that I love about a certain subset of contemporary British comedies is their core of steel. That, hiding underneath some often very hefty belly laughs, there’s a political story, a foundation of social outrage, and a desire to address through cinema issues that often get swept under the carpet. It’s what keeps such films in my mind, long after the latest R-rated comedy screen filler has...

Ever watched a big movie, and stopped with a jolt when a star of a British sitcom pops up? Us too...
This feature is all the fault of the late Richard Marner. As the incompetent Colonel in 'Allo 'Allo, he built a performance that was indelible in our eyes. Thus, when he turned up in a big Hollywood thriller as the President of Russia, we unsuccessfully stifled a guffaw. A big guffaw.
And it got us thinking: what other times has a British sitcom star appeared out of the blue in a big movie, causing a sedentary double take from the comfort of our local Odeon? Glad you asked.
Two things. Firstly, this isn't designed to be a complete list, and also, we've covered films made after the actor or actress confirmed rose to prominence in a sitcom. Oh, and another thing: none of...

A psycho-sexual character study masquerading as an intimate, yet peculiar love story, Unconditional explores a teenagers sudden desire to break free from the restraints his home life imposes on him, despite the mysteriousness surrounding the outside world and devotion to both his sister Kristen and their dependent mother. British actor Sean Bean still believes "in love" after his fourth divorce but is adamant he won't walk down the aisle again.
The Lord of the Rings star separated from his fourth wife Georgina Sutcliffe last summer and the pair officially divorced in December.
The split marked Bean's fourth failed marriage after unions with his high school sweetheart Debra James, actress Melanie Hill and Abigail Cruttenden.

He says, "Of course I believe in love despite four divorces. There is nobody who doesn't believe in love. But marriage? That fits some people, but obviously not me."...

Sean Bean is getting divorced for the fourth time. The "Lord of the Rings" actor's wife Georgina Sutcliffe submitted a petition to the High Court in London, citing "irreconcilable differences" as the reason behind the end of their two-year marriage.
Sean and Georgina, 32, have had a stormy relationship. Their wedding was called off 24 hours before the event in January 2008 for "personal reasons" but then went ahead weeks later.
In July 2009, the 51-year-old actor was briefly arrested after Georgina accused him of assault, before she asked police to drop the charges. The actress later downplayed the incident saying, "Everything is Ok. Sean and I are at home together enjoying the sunshine. He was arrested. Everything was blown out of proportion. Sean is fine and I'm fine. There's no problem between us."
In March this year, Sean denied divorce rumors saying, "Things are more settled. There will be no more divorce."
