In “Prom Dates,” two high school besties are sent reeling after their carefully orchestrated plans for the future take an abrupt turn, forcing them on a wild overnight adventure across town. If this set-up sounds vaguely familiar, it’s because director Kim O. Nguyen and screenwriter D.J. Mausner have combined a handful of ingredients from “Booksmart” and mixed them with some of the farcical odyssey of “After Hours.” However, unlike this teen raunch-com’s brilliantly conceived inspirations, its main friendship dynamic and ensuing shenanigans fail to resonate due to sloppy character construction and a cadre of cringe-worthy circumstances.
As innocent middle schoolers, Hannah (Millie Thorpe) and Jess (Hailey Philip) took a blood oath – one that went hilariously awry – to make their prom night the best night of their lives. But as seniors, the besties are finding that making good on their pact might prove difficult. Hannah (Julia Lester) is struggling with her sexuality,...

John Michael Higgins grew up on game shows as a child, so to play a host on TV or movies and then helm actual ones of his own is never lost on him. The prolific actor has been a popular fixture on the Game Show Network in recent years starting with America Says, which ran for five seasons over more than 500 episodes. The show even earned him an Emmy nomination for “Outstanding Game Show Host.” From there, Higgins has gone on to host a throwback in Split Second, which is currently in the middle of its second season. Based on the format from the legendary Monty Hall, the game sees three contestants decide in a split second which of the three general interest trivia questions they can answer. The first player to buzz in gets the first pick with the last player left to answer whatever is left, which is often the most difficult.

Game Show Network is bulking up its stable of original series, adding three new strip series to its lineup. As announced on Tuesday morning as part of its 2024 upfronts pitch to advertisers, Game Show Network revealed it has ordered a new version of classic gamer “Tic Tac Dough,” this time hosted by Brooke Burns, as well as a U.S. version of the U.K. format “Beat the Bridge,” to be hosted by Cameron Mathison.
Also at Gsn, the network will air episodes of the recently announced syndicated game show “Flip Side,” hosted by Jaleel White (“Family Matters”). News comes as Game Show Network also recently launched the comedy gamer “Blank Slate,” hosted by Mario Lopez, in January, as well as new episodes of “Split Second,” hosted by John Michael Higgins, and “Switch,” hosted by Jeff Hephner.
“Beat the Bridge” will premiere in June, with “Tic Tac Dough” in August and “Flip Side” in September.

Christina Hodson and Oren Uziel will co-write the next “Fast and Furious” movie with “Fast X” helmer Louis Leterrier returning to direct.
Last week, Variety exclusively revealed that Leterrier would direct the next installment of “Fast and Furious,” which serves as a companion film to “Fast X,” opening May 19. The 11th film in the Vin Diesel-starring franchise will mark Hodson and Uziel’s first official collaboration.
While news of the team up might come as a surprise to some, the two in-demand creatives are friends and share office space, which made the decision to work together practically inevitable.
Hodson is a British-born, Los Angeles-based, writer and producer, who is best known for writing Paramount’s 2018 “Transformers” prequel “Bumblebee” and writing and co-producing 2020’s “Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey” for Warner Bros. and DC Comics. Her next project is the highly anticipated “The Flash” movie, also for Warner Bros. and DC Comics.

Jenna Ortega tells the Please Don’t Destroy guys — Ben Marshall, John Higgins and Martin Herlihy — that she won’t do the Wednesday Dance she made famous in her Netflix series, but is ultimately persuaded in a “Saturday Night Live” promo clip released on Wednesday.
She’s the only one not dressed like her Gothic character in the clip, which you can watch above. All three male comedians are wearing a variation on her frilled black gown. She takes the stage and half-heartedly goes through the motions from the viral dance routine while looking exceedingly bored.

Jenna Ortega is sharing her honest feedback about revisiting the viral Wednesday dance in her Saturday Night Live promo.
Ortega, who stars in the new horror film Scream VI, makes her hosting debut March 11 on the NBC sketch comedy series. She will be joined by musical guest The 1975, who previously appeared on the show in 2016.

But the boys are not put off so easily. They’ve each dressed up as Wednesday and employ a bit of reverse psychology.
Watch the promo above.
In December, Ortega revealed that she had Covid when she shot the viral dance scene.
“It’s crazy because it was my first day with Covid, so it was awful to film,” Ortega told NME in an interview about shooting the memorable scene that she choreographed herself.

MGM head Dore Schary essentially co-opted one of Anthony Mann’s Eagle-Lion projects, hiring Mann, writer John Higgins and the great cinematographer John Alton away from the low budget factory and giving them more money to work‚ with. As‚ in their earlier T-Men, government agents infiltrate a crime ring, this time‚ one exploiting migrant farm workers. Surprisingly violent for Metro, this is one of the greatest looking ‚ black-and-white movies.

Ingmar Bergman had Liv Ullmann. Woody Allen had Diane Keaton and Christopher Guest had Catherine O’Hara — that’s how actor John Michael Higgins summed up the stature of O’Hara’s work on screen with Guest and other top directors during a wide-ranging Q&a held Saturday as part of the sixth annual USC Comedy Festival.
The Emmy-winning O’Hara was honored with the Jack Oakie and Victoria Horne Oakie Masters of Comedy Award at the festival, in recognition of her long, and often underrated, career in film, TV, stage and sketch comedy.
The Oakie Foundation honors the lives and work of two comedy legends, Jack Oakie and Victoria Horne Oakie. Jack Oakie won a supporting actor Oscar for Charlie Chaplins’ 1940 satire “The Great Dictator.” Victoria Oakie was a comedy trouper who had supporting roles (as Victoria Horne) in numerous films, most memorably opposite Jimmy Stewart in 1950’s “Harvey.”

Singer Miley Cyrus has revealed her New Year’s resolution for 2023.
Promising to listen more, both to herself and others next year, the 30-year-old pop star explained the vow was inspired by a conversation with her Godmother Dolly Parton who admitted that she got a telling off from her husband Carl Thomas Dean.
“I guess my resolution would really be – my instinct is very loud, but I’m not a great listener sometimes. Dolly was telling me, her husband says, ‘You’re not hard of hearing. You’re hard of listening.’ And I guess that would kind of be my resolution, to not just listen to myself, but listen to others,” Miley explained to Hoda Kotb in NBC’s upcoming special “A Toast to 2022!”
Cyrus turned 30 in November and the TV host asked if she’s feeling any different since marking the milestone.

In assembling its annual list of the 50+ men and women who matter most in comedy today, The Hollywood Reporter surveyed the top performers, writers, producers, showrunners and execs in the industry to get their read on how the business of making people laugh is evolving. Below, long-established superstars (e.g. Will Ferrell, Maya Rudolph, Kevin Hart), as well as some of this year’s breakouts (e.g. Kate Berlant and John Early, and the makers of smash hit half-hour The Bear) share their thoughts on the most played-out punchlines, offer their best ideas for getting comedies back in theaters, and assess what can safely be joked about these days. (For many, the answer on that last count remains: everything!) We also asked them to reveal more personal information, such as their secret sources of inspiration, and funniest mean thing ever said about them.

After fans called out Jeopardy! for a “tasteless” question referencing Gabby Petito’s murder, family members of Brian Laundrie have also spoken out to condemn it.
On Monday’s (14 November) episode of Jeopardy!, actors John Michael Higgins, Wil Wheaton, and Joel Kim Booster were put on the Alex Trebek stage.
A clue for an opening category featuring the letter “A” brought Laundrie, the prime suspect in Petito’s murder, into the spotlight.
As host Mayim Bialik read: “In 2021, fugitive Brian Laundrie ended his days in Fla’s Myakkahatchee Creek area, home to these long & toothy critters.”
The answer was: “What are alligators.”
In response to the moment, the Laundrie family’s attorney, Steve Bertolino, told Fox News: “The entire Laundrie family is appalled and concurs with all of the comments on social media on how distasteful this was.”

The Curse of Bridge Hollow has risen to become the No 1 film on Netflix’s movie charts.
The film, a horror comedy starring Marlon Wayans, Priah Ferguson, Kelly Rowland and John Michael Higgins, was released on the streaming service last week.
The Curse of Bridge Hollow tells the story of a quiet New England town that is rocked by supernatural terror when Halloween decorations start coming to life.
Reviews of the film have been mostly disparaging, and the film currently has a positive rating of just 41 per cent on the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes.
However, reactions on social media have been considerably warmer, with many viewers heralding the family-friendly film as a hit.
“The Curse of Bridge Hollow was adorable,” one person wrote on Twitter. “I hope it sparks the revival of silly, candy-corny, Dcom style Halloween films. Those were the best!”

The décor is tired of being neglected this Halloween season. A restless spirit with malintent uses any and every Halloween decoration and animatronic in its path to wreak havoc upon a small town. While Netflix’s The Curse of Bridge Hollow shares a similar premise to another family-friendly, novelty Halloween flick this Fall, its execution is far more energetic and fun.

Believe it or not, non-Jeopardy! viewers, but Celebrity Jeopardy! is a real thing and not just a classic series of SNL skits.
America’s favorite quiz show has been inviting celebrities on to try their hand at trivia since its ninth season in 1992. And yes, like in the aforementioned SNL skits, the questions are usually a bit “dumbed down” from the usual games. Still, many celebrities over the years have revealed themselves to be secret brainiacs with their surprising performance on the grueling game. Comedians like Cheech Marin, athletes like Aaron Rodgers, and actors like Jane Kaczmarek have all brought home some serious money for their respective charities.
Now, in its 39th season (and it second after the death of iconic original host Alex Trebek), Jeopardy! is going to give Celebrity Jeopardy! another go. This time, however, the stakes and scopes are much greater. Instead of being isolated to only a week within Jeopardy!
