- Began as an assistant director and second unit director in the 1950's, graduating to full director in 1962. Before working on feature films, he also directed hundreds of commercials. As part of a bequest, the Douglas Hickox Award is given to a British director on their debut feature.
- In 1970 it was announced that he would direct '5 and 7 makes 11' in Spain in April 1971.
- In the commentary for Edgar Wright's Hot Fuzz, a parody of cop action movies, with Wright and Quentin Tarantino, the latter said he was a huge fan of Hickox, primarily Sitting Target and Brannigan.
