With her spare, acoustic-driven solo work, Kristin Hersh sought to distinguish herself from the harder, post-punk sound of the singer-songwriter’s band Throwing Muses. A dozen albums in, she’s successfully carved out her own lane, maintaining a touch of the Muses’s jaggedness while largely eschewing electric instrumentation. While her latest album, Clear Pond Road, isn’t as radically stripped down as her earliest solo efforts, it’s still a departure from 2018’s more rock-oriented Possible Dust Clouds.
Clear Pond Road draws from a wide range of influences: The album’s cello arrangements take a page from the psychedelic pop of Love and the Beatles, while “Palmetto” is infused with the Delta blues in the vein of Son House. In the end, though, Hersh’s acoustic guitar is the album’s driving force, while at the same time avoiding the obvious tropes of roots music.

The last time Beck was at South By Southwest was back in 1994, a year where Johnny Cash gave a keynote address and then later played a showcase at Austin’s notorious punk club Emo’s. The headliner on that showcase? Beck himself.
Fast forward 28 years and Beck has become something of an elder statesman, armed with eight Grammys and making the cut on this year’s ballot for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Such an honorarium provides an ideal moment for a spot of reflection, and Beck...

Perhaps the only genre ever to be named after its fans’ level of educational attainment, “college rock” was exactly what the name implied: smart, fun music perfect for hanging out and drinking beer, ideally on a Friday afternoon in fall just after your last class was over. College rock got its start at the close of the Seventies in Athens, Georgia, with the insanely original dance-punk band Pylon; soon it came to be defined by the sweet, cryptic guitar jangle of R.E.M., who went on to help define Nineties alt-rock as well.

Boston trio Throwing Muses have shared another new song, “Frosting,” from their upcoming album, Sun Racket, out September 4th via Fire Records.
“Frosting,” as its title suggests, is a chilly blast of all-enveloping alt-rock, although the decisive swing of David Narcizo’s drums and Bernard Georges’ bass makes for a unique underpinning to Kristin Hersh’s buzzsaw guitar and hazy vocals. “In heaven maybe they don’t call you crazy,” Hersh wails near the song’s end, “In heaven take me over.”

Throwing Muses get nautical on the thrashing new song “Dark Blue.” The track is the lead single off the band’s new album, Sun Racket, out May 22nd on Fire Records.
“If I were a better dreamer, you’d be a dream come true,” Kristin Hersh seethes on “Dark Blue.” She sings over a crunching guitar riff, swimming through the dark waters of the chorus before repeating “Coming down” over and over, making her way back to shore.
“All it asked of us was to commingle two completely disparate sonic vocabularies: one heavy noise,...

Trick or treat...or rock n' roll? Why choose? If you need some of the best Halloween rock songs, we're your ghouls.
If you're looking for the "Monster Mash" you may look elsewhere. Halloween is handily the most rock n' roll friendly holiday, as the music that initially frightened parents and authority figures can always take particular inspiration from the vibes that are generally put forth on this most unholy of nights.
We've compiled 31 appropriate (or inappropriate) tunes for the holiday, focusing either specifically on horror movies, the supernatural, or that just have a spooky hook somewhere in there.
We've tried to arrange this like a double LP (four sides) of music for your listening pleasure. Crank 'em up, and make your own suggestions in the comments! You can also enjoy this as a Spotify playlist!

Call us crazy, but it seems like Wes Anderson has been getting a fair amount of special attention lately. In the past two months, there’s been a new book released chronicling his career in movies, there’s this short film he made with Jason Schwartzmann, his animated film “Fantastic Mr. Fox” is getting a Criterion Collection release, SNL recently did a parody of his films, and of course, his next film “The Grand Budapest Hotel” is just on the horizon (trailer here). If you are a fan of Wes Anderson, what more could you possibly want? Maybe a Wes Anderson tribute CD? Would you want that as well? No? Well, you’re gonna get it anyway… Entitled “I Saved Latin!,” the 2-cd tribute to Wes Anderson is due to come out next spring thanks to American Laundromat Records. The album features many cover songs that were prominently featured in Anderson’s first six films.

From Tori Amos's dad chaperoning her at her first paid gig, to Don Letts DJing with only one deck, a host of stars recall the formative moments that kicked off their careers
The first time I was paid to play live Tori Amos
I'd been kicked out of the Peabody conservatory in Baltimore at the age of 11 and lost my scholarship because I wasn't Peabody stock any more. I had real issues that they weren't teaching contemporary composers. They said the Beatles would be gone and dead within 30 years, and no one would care. It was 1974, I was 11, and it was good to be right! My minister father was really distraught. He had these dreams of me being a concert pianist and then going into religious music. I just looked and him and said: "Dad, this music is just not moving me." He said: "Well, if you're going to go into that world,...

I’m a huge fan of Rock Band, like so many others. Harmonix studios decided to take the next step of their powerhouse fake band music game by introducing the Rock Band Network to players.
What is it, exactly? MTV Gaming Executive, Paul Degooyer, provides a bit of an explanation:
“The Rock Band Network Music Store gives artists at any level the opportunity to reach new fans through our deeply engaging interactive platform. This new pathway for discovery is a huge win for passionate music fans, as well as an opportunity for artists to promote themselves while positively impacting their bottom line.”
The Rock Band Network allows musicians and their labels to directly pipe new music to gamers through Rock Band – where gamers can disover new artists and expand their taste in music.
More or less, it’s a fancy promotion system that lets gamers get access to new music through Rock Band.

The world of music took a hit on Christmas Day when they lost a talented star. Indie folk rock singer/songwriter Vic Chesnutt died from an apparent suicide in his hometown on December 25th. He was 45 years old. Chesnutt was known for his dark musical style and often collaborated with Michael Stipe of R.E.M. and Kristin Hersh of Throwing Muses. It was Chesnutt's good friend Hersh who first announced that he was hospitalized following an overdose of muscle relaxants on her Twitter account. On December 23rd, she tweeted, "i can tell you what i know, but no one knows much ...

It was a sad Christmas for the friends and family of singer/songwriter Vic Chesnutt, as the artist passed away on Friday (December 25) after spending two days in a coma thanks to an overdose of muscle relaxers. Chesnutt was 45 years old. The Athens, Georgia-based Chesnutt was something of an icon in the indie rock community who wrote spare, darkly comic tunes about love and death. His famous fans included R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe (another Athens native), Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan and former Throwing Muses frontwoman Kristin Hersh.
When he was 18, Chesnutt was in a car accident that left him paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair, but he did not let his disability stop him from writing or performing. Stipe discovered him and produced his first two albums Little and West of Rome. He put out a total of 13 records over his career (including two in 2009), though he is...
