The copyright battle over Road House and this year’s remake starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Conor McGregor has turned into a full-on bare-knuckle legal brawl.
If R. Lance Hill, who penned the original 1986 script under the moniker David Lee Henry, thought in his February filing that he was going to bop Amazon Studios, MGM Studios and United Artists over “blatant copyright infringement” – he just got smacked back, hard.
“Plaintiff’s Complaint ignores the well-established rule of copyright law that the author of a work made for hire is not the individual who created the work,” declares the counterclaim filing by Amazon Studios, MGM and United Artists in federal court on May 3 (read it here).

A legal brawl is underway over the Road House remake, with MGM Studios bringing counterclaims against the original film’s screenwriter over the rights to the 1986 screenplay that spawned the movie.
In a countersuit filed on Friday in California federal court, the studio and its parent, Amazon, accuse Hill of fraud for lying to the U.S. Copyright Office that he’s the true author of the screenplay and can take advantage of a provision in copyright law that allows him and other similarly-situated writers to reclaim the rights to past works.
Marc Toberoff, a lawyer for Hill, said in a statement that the fraud claim is “baseless deflection.” He added that he “informed the Copyright Office that this matter is in dispute and would be the subject of litigation.”

There are a lot cult classics from the 1980s, but Road House stands somewhere near the top. Sure, many of its fans wouldn’t label it as such, since they lovingly, legitimately and unironically adore it. But there’s no use in arguing it belongs in one camp over another or that it is unapologetically everything it sets out to be. But it – and its cult following – couldn’t have happened without a few broken ribs, a don’t-take-no producer and some pervy late-night phone calls to a star’s spouse. Yes, it involves Bill Murray… So, pour some suds and rip some throats because we’re gonna find out: Wtf Happened to this Movie?!

The 1989 summer movie season might've officially kicked off on Memorial Day weekend with the release of Steven Spielberg's "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade," but having been a movie-mad 15-year-old kid at the time, I can assure you that May's first adrenalized action spectacular opened a week earlier when Patrick Swayze introduced us to a man named Dalton in the instant s***-kicker classic "Road House." Critics initially wrote it off as a mindless meathead programmer from mayhem merchant Joel Silver, but the aptly-monikered director Rowdy Herrington and the screenwriting duo of David Lee Henry and Hilary Henkin understood their ludicrous assignment and aced it with knowing aplomb. Their unabashed commitment to inherently risible material turned "Road House" into the "Citizen Kane" of bar bouncer movies.
Of course, "Road House" was, for a long time, the only bar bouncer movie ever made. Surprisingly, given the film's enduring popularity, few...

One Jake Gyllenhaal movie became national headlines in the French media for all the wrong reasons, but the U.S. media are too busy reporting his Road House troubles. Gyllenhaal and Vanessa Kirby were signed for the indie film, Suddenly. Gyllenhaal also agreed to produce the $26 million movie directed by Thomas Bidegain. However, the production of the film fell apart in four days due to allegedly erratic behavior from the Enemy actor.

The second act of the 2024 remake of Road House climaxes with a nasty knockdown fight between UFC fighter turned bouncer Dalton (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Knox (UFC fighter turned actor Conor McGregor). Squishy sounds of smacked meat mix with a thumping rock song, like a second rhythm track every time the two ruffians punch each other. Early in the fight, the camera switches to first-person view as Knox batters his opponent before swinging around as Dalton takes his turn. It’s all bathed in yellow light, with the sickly glow cut only by neon beer signs hanging on the walls.
In short, the Road House remake is trash.
But it is wonderful trash, full of cheeseball crowd-pleasing, gnarly action, and some genuine humor. Road House had me cheering and pumping my fist in the air. Well, it would have, had I been watching it in a movie theater full of fans...

Directed by Doug Liman, Road House is an upcoming action movie starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Conor McGregor, Daniel Melchior, J.D. Pardo, and more. The movie is a re-imagination of the 1989 movie of the same name and had its world premiere at SXSW on March 8th, 2023. According to reports, the reviews have been positive from the critics and the audience with an impressive score of 76% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The movie’s director wrote an editorial piece criticizing Amazon for bypassing a theatrical release of the movie. R. Lance Hill, the original screenwriter of the 1989 movie, decided to sue MGM and Amazon, allegedly stating the copyright infringement and noted that the studios used AI-generative voice tools to complete the movie during strikes. But upon its premiere, critics have expressed that the performances in the movie are commendable and pay homage to the ’80s cult classic.

The first reactions to Road House have arrived out of its premiere at this year’s SXSW, with some surprise praise that seems to highlight to a missed opportunity for Amazon to release it in theaters. Ahead of its streaming debut later this month, all signs point to Road House being just the sort of flick that has to be watched with a crowd, while a number of attendees noted that Jake Gyllenhaal is not to be messed with and Conor McGregor is a genuine scene-stealing presence.
Check out the initial Road House reactions via X below:
It’s too bad Road House is only streaming because watching it w/ the crowd at #SXSW was the best part. The story is severely lacking but that’s not why we’re here – McGregor gnashing scenery & energetic action (Face/Off inspo?) keep it afloat. Self aware as a remake, which helps. pic.

Jake Gyllenhaal fills Patrick Swayze’s shoes in a brashly entertaining romp featuring a knockout debut from the UFC champ
It would be easy to dismiss a new Road House – the shoes left by a gritty, sweaty Patrick Swayze in the pulpy 1989 action film are hard ones to fill; sequels and remakes tend to tip the fine balance of good-bad that defined so many films from that period into straight-up bad. Plus, the Road House remake from The Bourne Identity director Doug Liman is (controversially) bypassing theaters and headed straight to streaming via Amazon Prime Video – by now, given the deluge of disposable content, a dubious distinction for quality.
The straight-to-streaming release plan, however intentional, is indeed a bummer, as Liman’s rowdy, campy remake both looks and sounds more expensive and textured than what we’ve come to expect from digital releases. This Ultimate Fighting Championship-inflected Road House,...

In the era of action films like John Wick, the bar for adrenaline-fueled entertainment has been set high. And when it comes to remakes, there exists a fine line that must be walked between regard for the original and fresh perspectives.
Doug Liman directs the remake of the classic1989 film Road House, which premiered Friday in the Headliner category at SXSW 2024. Unfortunately, this remake starring Jake Gyllenhaal delivers a lackluster and ultimately unnecessary retread of the original Patrick Swayze-starring film.
Central to the movie is Gyllenhaal’s Dalton, a former UFC brawler grappling with his past. Struggling to get by on his reputation, Dalton catches the eye of Frankie (Jessica Williams), who owns a roadhouse in the picturesque Florida Keys. She recruits him as her new bouncer, aiming to protect her cherished establishment from a ruthless gang under the command of the local criminal overlord, Brandt (Billy Magnussen).

Take it outside, Jake Gyllenhaal — there was already a “Road House 2.” And it was awful.
The Og “Road House” starring Patrick Swayze came out in 1989 and made $30 million at the box office — a nice return on investment back in the day. Naturally, MGM struck while the iron was hot: a scant 17 years later, the studio released a straight-to-dvd sequel, “Road House 2: Last Call” (2006). Exactly 17 more years later, I went straight to Vudu to buy it. I did not get a good Roi on my $9.99.
Look, I knew what I was getting into. Like you, I didn’t realize there was a “Road House 2” until Doug Liman made a “Road House 3.”
Still the only “Road House” to get a theatrical release, the Swayze flick ended up doing most of its damage on home entertainment. The film isn’t well-reviewed — it has a 41 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 36 on...

This year’s SXSW Film and TV Festival (running March 8 through March 16) continues the Austin-based multimedia showcases expansion beyond typical-screen movies and into the realms of TV and Xr experiences.
The festival’s opening night premiere, Doug Liman’s “Road House,” falls somewhere in the cracks between film and TV, as controversially the Jake Gyllenhaal-led ’80s throwback reimagining will not play theaters from Amazon MGM Studios and will instead plop on Amazon Prime Video on March 21. (“Road House” and Amazon MGM are meanwhile in the thick of a copyright lawsuit filed by the 1989 original’s screenwriter R. Lance Hill that also messily involves the studio’s alleged AI usage to rush completion on the movie.)
Similarly, the deep-pocketed but theatrically stingy streamer’s “The Idea of You,” a Coachella-set romantic dramedy from director Michael Showalter and starring Anne Hathaway, will also be a Prime Video exclusive this May after playing SXSW.

Doug Liman’s upcoming “Road House” remake features some dramatic departures from its source material, moving the setting from Missouri to the Florida Keys and introducing a UFC-centric backstory for its bouncer protagonist. But no amount of creative changes could fully separate it from the legacy of original “Road House” star Patrick Swayze — something leading man Jake Gyllenhaal understands all too well.
In a post on his personal Instagram account on Sunday morning, Gyllenhaal paid tribute to Swayze and recalled their time working together on “Donnie Darko.” He recalled Swayze’s generosity as a mentor and expressed hope that the late actor would enjoy his new take on “Road House.”

Amazon Prime Video is releasing a remake of the '80s classic "Road House" this year, one that will star Jake Gyllenhaal in the lead role (stepping in for the late Patrick Swayze). Director Doug Liman's new take on the film will be changing things up in several ways. For one, Gyllenhaal's version of Dalton will be an ex-UFC fighter. Whether or not he does any throat-ripping remains to be seen. But it sounds like the filmmakers really upped the ante in the action department as well. How so? By implementing, er, very fancy, high-tech pillow fights.

Amazon has vehemently denied using artificial intelligence to finish its upcoming remake of “Road House,” despite a new lawsuit alleging the studio did just that to race the film out before the studio’s copyright on the original IP lapsed. Jake Gyllenhaal says Road House was always going straight-to-streaming, while allegations that the production used AI resurface.
Road House appears on Amazon Prime Video on March 21st, and combines the talents of Jake Gyllenhaal, UFC star Conor McGregor and director Doug Liman. Exciting but with a heady dash of mayhem is how we’d describe this particular creative trio, which is pretty much the same experience you’d get when popping in for a tipple at the titular road house that features in the movie.
It wasn’t that long ago that Doug Liman announced he was boycotting the premiere because Amazon had refused to release the film in cinemas. For most productions, having the filmmaker publicly denounce the studio would be more than enough conflict for one film. Road House though, isn’t most movies, and it looks as though we’ll be getting a few more dust-ups before the party’s over.

A legal fight is brewing over the upcoming Road House remake, with the original film’s screenwriter suing Amazon Studios.
R. Lance Hill, in a lawsuit filed Tuesday in California federal court, accuses MGM Studios and its parent, Amazon, of copyright infringement for refusing to license his 1986 screenplay after he allegedly clawed back the rights to his work. He seeks a court order blocking the release of the movie.
According to the complaint, Amazon instituted a self-imposed deadline to complete the remake. To meet this deadline, which was threatened by the actors strike, the suit claims Amazon resorted to using generative artificial intelligence to replicate the voices of the movie’s actors in violation of the collective bargaining agreements of SAG-AFTRA and the Director’s Guild of America.
In a statement, a spokesperson for Amazon MGM Studios said the lawsuit is “completely without merit” and that “numerous allegations are categorically false.

The original “Road House” screenwriter is entering the octagon with Amazon Studios and MGM — in a legal battle, at least. Screenwriter R. Lance Hill, who uses the pen name David Lee Henry, has filed a lawsuit against Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios and parent company Amazon Studios for copyright infringement, as first reported by the Los Angeles Times.
Hill wrote the screenplay for the original “Road House” film in 1986; the movie was released in 1989. Hill says the copyright for “Road House” was set to revert back from United Artists to him in November 2023, and that he notified United Artists and its successor companies in November 2021 about his plans to recover the copyright for the “Road House” screenplay. He says he provided a “statutory notice of termination” that fits within the Copyright Act.
Hill further states that Amazon/MGM, aware of the copyright timeline, worked to complete the film during the SAG-AFTRA strike by using artificial intelligence.

The fighting we’re about to see on-screen in the Road House remake seems tame compared to what’s happening behind the scenes of this Amazon-MGM production. R. Lance Hill, the screenwriter of the original 1989 film “Road House,” has filed a law suit against Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios and its parent company, Amazon Studios, for copyright infringement.
In the filing obtained by Variety, Hill (who uses pen name David Lee Henry) claims Amazon ignored his ability to reclaim the rights for his 1986 screenplay as they mounted a remake starring Jake Gyllenhaal, out March 21 on Prime Video.
Hill’s lawsuit alleges that he filed a petition with the U.S. Copyright Office in 2021, requesting that the copyright return to him after United Artists’ claim was set to expire in November 2023.
The suit goes on to allege that Amazon ignored his claims and proceeded with the film, using artificial intelligence to replicate the voices of actors for Adr during the SAG strike in an effort to complete the film before the Nov. 10 deadline.

The 1989 film Road House gets transported from Missouri to Florida in the first official trailer for Prime Video’s Road House. In place of Patrick Swayze’s James Dalton, Jake Gyllenhaal leads the film as Edward Dalton, an ex-UFC fighter helping to keep rowdy clientele at a Florida Keys roadhouse in check.
“He acts all nice and shit, like he’s Mister Rogers or something,” one character, played by Arturo Castro, says in the clip. “But then he beats the living shit out of you.” He would know, having...

Jake Gyllenhaal is the Mr. Rogers of bar brawls in the first look at Doug Liman’s updated take on the Patrick Swayze and Sam Elliott 1989 classic, Road House.
In the trailer, which is nearly two and a half minutes of nonstop knockouts, Gyllenhaal leads as Elwood Dalton, an ex-UFC middleweight fighter who takes one too many hits, and it’s not clear he can — or wants to — get back up. He’s living out of his beat-up car and participating in underground fighting rings when he’s found by Jessica Williams’ bar owner, who invites him to come work for her.
“A friend of mine suggested I come talk to you. I own a roadhouse out in the Florida Keys. Lately it’s been attracting the wrong clientele,” she tells him. “I can pay you good money. Judging by your car, you need that shit.”

Amazon has just given us a sneak peek at the much-anticipated ‘Road House’ remake, set to premiere on Prime Video in 2024. The movie, a fresh take on the 1989 classic, showcases Jake Gyllenhaal in a powerhouse role, looking more buff than ever.
In this remake, Gyllenhaal steps into the shoes of Elwood Dalton, a former UFC fighter who finds himself as a bouncer in a Florida roadhouse. The teaser, part of Prime Video’s sizzle reel for its 2024 lineup, gives us a glimpse of Gyllenhaal’s intense physical transformation for the role.
While fans might be thrilled to see Gyllenhaal’s new character, the release strategy for Road House has stirred up some controversy. Originally hoped to hit theaters, the film will now debut directly on Prime Video. This decision reportedly didn’t sit well with Gyllenhaal and director Doug Liman, who believed the film had big-screen potential, especially after positive test screenings.

There’s bound to be blood on the bar room floor when Doug Liman’s Road House remake starts a rumble in theaters. According to FilmRatings.com, the update starring Jake Gyllenhaal is Rated R for violence throughout, pervasive language, and some nudity. Today’s Road House remake rating clearly indicates that Liman won’t be holding back when the film punches its way into cinemas, and Gyllenhaal’s transformation into a chiseled behemoth won’t go to waste.
The original Road House starred Patrick Swayze as Dalton, a “cooler” hired to help clean up The Double Deuce, one of the rowdiest bars in Missouri. The film has become a cult favorite over the years, and there have been various attempts at remaking the movie. Prime Video says the new take will star Gyllenhaal as a former UFC fighter who takes a job as a bouncer at a roadhouse in the Florida Keys.

Tonight on ‘movies we really want to like’ we have Hal Ashby’s final feature, an L.A.- based crime saga with a great cast and spirited direction and . . . and not much else. It isn’t the train wreck described in Kino’s candid actor interviews, but we can see only too well why it wasn’t a big winner when new. Any day that a Jeff Bridges picture doesn’t shine, is a dark day in my book.
