Brought to you by some of the team behind Succession is The Regime, HBO’s latest uber-ambitious prestige satire. Elevated by a never-better Kate Winslet and a solid supporting cast, the miniseries is quite uneven, but when all of its elements work together in harmony, it’s very entertaining and provocative.
The Regime follows the authoritarian chancellor of an unnamed European country as her control over her people begins to fall apart behind the closed doors of her deteriorating palace. For fans of British political satire, this is filled with intriguing ideas, but the short episode count creates erratic pacing and tone.
The first episode of the series, directed by the legendary Stephen Frears, has a dry humor about it — very reminiscent of the British stylings of Armando Iannucci. In fact, the stylings of the first half of the show make it almost surprising that the satirist himself wasn’t...

There’s an incredibly interesting story lurking somewhere beneath “Intrusion,” about the way mistrust and paranoia can slowly chip away at a marriage. The film, however, eschews this tale in favor of something a little more rote, and a little bit trashier. It’s a fun watch, to be sure; as a home invasion movie of sorts, it has a number of thrilling moments, and lead actors . However, the final product also exudes trepidation about its most intriguing aesthetic and narrative elements — ideas which may have only enhanced its genre sensibilities, had the filmmakers further pursued them.

For over two decades, Alex Heffes has been a rock solid composer, turning in work that crosses genres, be it Academy Award winning fare like The Last King of Scotland or Inside Job, as well as his own Golden Globe nominated score for Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. With Heffes in contention for some Emmy Award love for the Apple TV+ documentary The Elephant Queen, it was a pleasure to hop on the phone a few days ago with him about talk a bit about music, the doc, and what it’s like to try and compose during isolation and the Covid-19 quarantine. Below you will find my chat with Alex Heffes. It’s a pretty interesting one, especially in terms of hearing about how he looks to find the sounds that compliment the visuals of his projects. It’s next to impossible for a documentary score to be Oscar-nominated alongside the dozens of fictional narratives entered each year. But it did happen, just once: In 1975, composer Gerald Fried was nominated for his music for “Birds Do It, Bees Do It,” a documentary on the mating habits of animals.
Fried, now 91, perhaps best-known for his Emmy-winning score for “Roots,” recalls his surprise at the nomination. He believes that his fresh use of the relatively new synthesizer sounds, along with more traditional orchestra, was probably the reason his colleagues noticed and approved.
No doc score before or since has been nominated. Yet music for documentaries is being taken more seriously than ever before, going by the number of award-season screenings and even live-to-picture concert performances.
“Documentary films have really come of age cinematically,” says composer Jeff Beal, who conducted his score for “The Biggest Little Farm” on Dec. 4 at Los Angeles’ Wiltern Theater,...

Disney’s “Queen of Katwe” is based on the true story of 10-year-old Phiona, a young girl from Uganda with a knack for chess and dreams of becoming an international champion. It’s clearly positioned as an inspiring tale, and to underpin that message Disney brought on Alicia Keys to write and perform a new song for the soundtrack, “Back To Life.”
The cathartic track, written by Keys, Carlo Montagnese and Billy Walsh, is about pushing past the little voice of doubt in our heads so we can instead, “electrify the world,” Keys said in a press release. Starting as a piano ballad with minimal strings, “Back to Life” then morphs into a fun uptempo, electronic, head-shaking pop song. Take a listen below.

Strangely dropping a press release on a historic day where the nation's attention is elsewhere, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed their annual list of new member invitees this morning. For those who criticize the makeup of the Academy there was some good news and the stark realization the organization still has a long way to go. The Academy has spent the last eight to 10 years attempting to diversify its membership and this year's class mostly reflects that. There are significantly more invitees of Asian and African-American descent, but the male to female disparity is still depressing. Out of the 25 potential new members of the Actor's Branch only seven are women. And, no, there isn't really an acceptable way for the Academy to spin that sad fact. Additionally, It's important to realize the 322 people noted in the release have only been invited to join Hollywood's most exclusive club.

From the Waterphone to a four-headed double bass made with forks and spoons, composers have been experimenting with weird and wonderful instruments over the years for film soundtracks. Now, Alex Heffes has been bashing a bike for Stephen Frears's new Lance Armstrong biopic.
The as-yet-untitled film charts the rise and fall of the infamous American cyclist as he won seven Tour de France titles, only to have them stripped away when it was proven that he was using performance-enhancing drugs. Ben Foster is playing Armstrong, alongside Chris O'Dowd as David Walsh, the journalist who exposed him, while Hollywood legend Dustin Hoffman also makes an appearance.
The film will inevitably be packed with dramatic episodes both on and off the cycling track, calling for a powerful, thematically-resonant score to back them up. This is where renowned composer Heffes (State of Play) stepped up with a suggestion.

Established in 2012, Sundance London is growing into a quiet fixture on the British film calendar -- a three-day roundup of highlights from the Sundance Film Festival lineup making their UK premiere, I'm not sure if it's built up much of a public profile -- possibly because of its less-than-central location in the vast O2 Dome -- but for the many Brit industry folk and film fanatics who can't fork out for the January trip to Park City, it's a handy catch-up, and returns for its third edition next month. The lineup was announced today -- and while many of the bigger Sundance sensations have been pinched by the programmers of the London, Edinburgh and Sheffield festivals, it's a healthy mix. Among the most notable inclusions are: "The Case Against 8," the same-sex marriage documentary that confirmed its Us release date last week; "Obvious Child," the Jenny Slate-starring feminist romantic...

With the awards season very much in full swing, the 2014 Golden Globes were held out in Beverly Hills last night, with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosting the event once more.
The awards are noted for being one of the few major prizes to divide the categories by genre – i.e. giving one for Drama and one for Musical or Comedy in the Motion Picture Categories. So using them to predict what comes next in the likes of the BAFTAs and the Oscars can naturally be difficult. Regardless, it’s clear that Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave and David O. Russell’s American Hustle were big winners last night, and both continue to build momentum towards the awards still to come.
As we eagerly await the Oscar nominations announcement later this week, here’s the full list of winners from last night’s 2014 Golden Globes. A great way to start the week.

12 Years a Slave, nominated for seven Golden Globe Awards, narrowly avoided getting shut out when it took home the night’s final and biggest prize for Best Drama. Steve McQueen’s period slave drama looked to be out of favor with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, with Gravity’s Alfonso Cuaron winning for Best Director, Her’s Spike Jonze winning for Best Screenplay, and the Dallas Buyers Club duo of Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto winning the acting awards. But when Johnny Depp announced the big prize, 12 Years a Slave came out on top.

Indiewire will provide regular updates of our predictions for the Golden Globe Awards through January 12th, when the winners are announced. Like best picture (drama), this race looks like a showdown between "12 Years a Slave" (represented here by Hans Zimmer) and "Gravity' (Steven Price). We're going with the latter (and would be glad if that ended up being the case), but it really could be either/or. Our take below. Check out all predictions in all the categories here.
