The Directors Guild of America held its 76th annual awards tonight at the Beverly Hilton. Christopher Nolan took home the night’s top honor for Oppenheimer. Celine Song took home the prize for first-time theatrical film for Past Lives.

The group handed its top trophy to the Daniels for Everything Everywhere All at Once last year, and Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert went on to snag the Academy Award a month later, becoming only the third duo to claim that prized statuette.

One of Christopher Nolan's strengths as a director is just how efficient he is. Whereas some directors are famous for their long, chaotic production schedules, Nolan's films tend to be finished within budget and ahead of schedule. It's part of how he somehow managed to release "Batman Begins" and "The Prestige" within a year of each other, and also how he managed to make the star-studded, three-hour epic "Oppenheimer" under a budget of $100 million. For context, the far less visually impressive "The Flash" cost $300 million.
Considering how star-studded "Oppenheimer" is, and how over-inflated so many other movie budgets have been in recent years, its relatively low budget feels like a miracle. In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, however, lead actor Cillian Murphy talked about how miracles had nothing to do with it:
"I think every single crew member, every single actor wants to be on a Chris Nolan set [...] like Robert [Downey Jr.] was saying,...

Nolan now has five under his belt, with no wins so far. Payne was nominated twice before but didn’t win the award either year. "Mr. President, I feel I have blood on my hands," said J. Robert Oppenheimer to President Harry Truman in 1945 during a fateful meeting at the Oval Office, according to a description of their encounter in "American Prometheus." Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" stages this event to dramatic effect, with Truman (Gary Oldman) calling the theoretical physicist a "crybaby" after the latter addresses the ethical quandaries of dropping the world's first atomic weapon. This moment is memorable; it underlines the government's eagerness to literally weaponize nuclear weapons development projects while also zooming in on Oppenheimer's accumulating guilt and despair.
According to "Oppenheimer" production designer Ruth De Jong, filming this scene demanded a considerable amount of last-minute effort and improvisations, as the crew's plans to film at the original location had fallen through days before the shoot. /Film's Bill Bria attended a home entertainment release junket for "Oppenheimer," where De Jong detailed the...

Never one to skirt the truth, visionary director Christopher Nolan has always paid close attention to getting the real story down on 70mm film, even down to the smallest detail. "The Dark Knight" was so grounded in reality that Batman seemed more like an actual historical figure than a traumatized superhero. With "Oppenheimer," Nolan and his team had one of the most exhaustive biographies ever written at their disposal, "American Prometheus," written by authors Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin. That deep dive into the definitive account of the creation of the atomic bomb and its aftermath even led to more discoveries that the historians missed the first time around.

The full look follows a previously released teaser trailer.
Ferrari is testing the limits of his new cars, resulting in sometimes explosive and even deadly crashes. At the same time, he is grappling with the life he built with wife and business partner Laura (Penélope Cruz) amid the death of their son, Dino, and his other family with mistress Lina Lardi (Shailene Woodley) and their son, Piero.

Michael Mann’s last outing as a feature film director was eight years ago with the cyber crime film Blackhat, starring Chris Hemsworth. Now, the director of such classic films as The Last of the Mohicans and Heat returns with the story of Enzo Ferrari. Ironically, Mann had executive produced James Mangold’s 2019 racing film, Ford v Ferrari, in which the Italian brand was the main competition for the film’s protagonists. Mann’s Ferrari is naturally the story from the other side (albeit at a different time) as the film shows the auto giant navigating the issues of his personal life with the looming obstacles of an upcoming, dangerous 1,000-mile race.
The official synopsis from Neon reads,
“It is the summer of 1957. Behind the spectacle of Formula 1, ex-racer Enzo Ferrari is in crisis. Bankruptcy threatens the factory he and his wife, Laura built from nothing ten years earlier.

Neon has released the first look at its fiery Michael Mann racing drama Ferrari, starring Adam Driver, Penélope Cruz and Shailene Woodley.
Based on Brock Yates’ book Enzo Ferrari: The Man, The Cars, The Races, The Machine, the anticipated film (which has landed on THR chief film critic David Rooney’s Top 10 list) follows Ferrari during the summer of 1957, as the ex-Formula 1 racer who built his own factory and established the Ferrari brand.
But in the nearly one-and-a-half minute sneak peek, which arrived just a day before the film is set to premiere at the Venice Film Festival, the legacy Ferrari built is in crisis. Bankruptcy threatens his business, which he built with his wife, Laura (Cruz), 10 years before. In his personal life, Ferrari struggles to handle the death of their son, Dino, amid a worsening marriage, and to acknowledge his other son, Piero, with mistress Lina Lardi.

Ahead of the film’s debut at the Venice Film Festival, Neon has dropped the first trailer for “Heat” and “The Insider” filmmaker Michael Mann’s new movie “Ferrari.” Not quite a biopic, the film chronicles Enzo Ferrari (played by Adam Driver) through the lens of one fateful summer.
Set in 1957, the film follows ex-racer Ferrari (Adam Driver) as he faces multiple crises: his factory and family are under threat of bankruptcy, his marriage is in shambles due to the loss of their son Dino, his relationship with his other son outside his marriage is strained and his drivers are pushed to the edge as they launch into the treacherous 1,000-mile race across Italy, the Mille Miglia.

Christopher Nolan is one of those directors whose films you watch and can immediately tell nothing was left to chance. Whichever way you feel about the stories he prefers to tell, it's clear he knows precisely what he wants to say and how to say it during any given moment. It's a quality that's allowed him to emerge as the rare true auteur working on a blockbuster scale over the past 20 years. After all, studios love a thrifty storyteller who makes the most of every dollar they spend, and even his detractors would have to admit Nolan excels in that department.
Even by his standards, however, Nolan was extremely fastidious when it came to shooting "Oppenheimer," and for a very good reason. Speaking on the "Team Deakins" podcast (via Variety), the film's production designer Ruth De Jong said, "It felt like a $100 million indie." Christopher Nolan cut the filming of 'Oppenheimer' to 57 days to free up funds to build Los Alamos.Production designer Ruth De Jong has revealed they were running out of money while she was designing the town in New Mexico, which is one of the development and creation places of the atomic bomb. However, the director came up with a way to increase the set design budget by cutting back on the time they had to shoot the flick from 85 days to 57.Speaking on the 'Team Deakins' podcast, Ruth spilled: “It felt like a $100 million indie. “This is not 'Tenet' [which was shot in 96 days]. Chris wanted to shoot all over the United States…just plane tickets alone and putting crew up all over the place [is expensive]. Not to mention I have to build Los Alamos, it doesn’t exist. "Oppenheimer" is a big movie so it makes sense that it would be shot in the biggest possible format — IMAX (the movie was shot in both IMAX 65 mm and 65 mm large-format film). Christopher Nolan loves to shoot his films for IMAX screens, and "Oppenheimer" is no exception. "You rarely get the chance to really talk to moviegoers directly about why you love a particular format and why if they can find an IMAX screen to see the film on that's great," the filmmaker said. "We put a lot of effort into shooting the film in a way that we can get it out on these large format screens. It really is just a great way of giving people an experience that they can't possibly get in the home."

IMAX has published a BTS (Behind The Scenes) video, which is quite rare regarding the amount of information revealed on one of the most powerful film projects ever made – Oppenheimer, directed by Christopher Nolan and shot by Hoyte Van Hoytema on IMAX film cameras. Let’s read their thoughts and insights about making the movie.
BTS of Oppenheimer: Hoyte van Hoytema with the IMAX camera. Picture: IMAX Oppenheimer: Filmed with IMAX cameras
The forthcoming Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer was shot with IMAX film cameras. Indeed, as IMAX (Image Maximum) business is booming during the post-covid age, IMAX would want to leverage it, especially with the top-notch director and his cinematic partner (IMAX specialist and cinematographer Hoyte Van Hoytema) who both love IMAX cameras so much. Can we blame them? Till the second generation of IMAX cameras comes (supposed to be operational till the end of the year), Nolan and...

Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” production team actually had to engineer the 65mm black and white Imax film created for the production in order to shoot the movie.
A new behind the scenes featurette, “Oppenheimer – Shooting For Imax,” breaks it all down. Watch the embed below.
“How are we going to do it? Because 65mm black and white was a format that didn’t exist,” cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema said. “So there was a lot of engineering that went into that.”

Hayslip added: “We actually had to create the black and white film that we were using to shoot.

The soundtrack to "Donnie Darko" is among my all-time favorite movie soundtracks, and I'm surely not alone in this. Not only is the score by Michael Andrews hauntingly beautiful, but the licensed songs played throughout are New Wave gems. Seriously, what other movie soundtrack has The Church, Oingo Boingo, and Joy Division on it?
However, the most memorable inclusion on the "Donnie Darko" soundtrack had to be not one, but two songs from English pop duo Tears for Fears -- one was the famous Andrews and Gary Jules cover of "Mad World," while the other was the studio version of "Head Over Heels." It's hard to separate either song from the film anymore, and the way they are both integrated into the film shows how carefully constructed each element of Richard Kelly's movie is.

At long last, the masses will be able to see Christopher Nolan’s latest in about a month. Yes, earlier today there was a press release put out by Warner Bros. announcing when Tenet would be coming to homes. Officially, December 15th is when the film will be available on 4K, Blu-ray, and Digital Video On Demand. The movie obviously is still playing in theaters, but with no signs that Los Angeles or New York City will see cinemas opening soon, this seems like the right call by WB. Nolan fans will get to finally see the flick, no one is put at risk, and the company can continue to try and make some money back on it. All in all, everyone seems to win here with this choice… Here’s the press release, making the Tenet announcement: Burbank, CA, November 5 – “Tenet,” the must-see motion picture event, playing now on...
