There is much that is lovely to gaze upon in the elegantly tailored documentary “Invisible Beauty,” about fashion maverick Bethann Hardison, whose role in her industry, starting in the late ’60s and continuing into the present, has been remarkable personally and game-changing culturally.
Those five decades — hers and the industry’s — are expertly woven together by co-directors Hardison and Frédéric Tcheng, using a cache of personal photos, a wealth of archival images, clips and interviews sewn together by Hardison’s sharing of recollections and insights. The film is also buoyed by a delicate, sometimes moody piano-led score courtesy of Marc Anthony Thompson, with some additionally vivid musical choices that match the energy of the late, “Black is Beautiful” ’60s and the fashion-fast-forward ’70s.
When there were shifts in how the fashion industry viewed models of color, Hardison was there as participant but more often catalyst. She was one...

When Bethann Hardison co-created the Black Girls Coalition in 1988 — a group formed with Iman to shine a spotlight on women of color in modeling — she didn’t know she was laying the foundation for a discussion about diversity in fashion that would continue for decades.
“I just wanted to celebrate Black models. I wanted them to see each other,” says Hardison, the subject of the new documentary Invisible Beauty. Co-directed by Frédéric Tcheng (Dior and I, Halston) and Hardison and in theaters Sept. 15, the film details the fashion industry’s history of racial exclusion and her unflagging efforts over decades to push for progress. One minute into the film, actress Tracee Ellis Ross calls Hardison the “godmother of fashion.”
Bethann Hardison
The title Invisible Beauty is a nod to Ralph Ellison’s 1952 novel Invisible Man, in which an unnamed Black man narrates what life is like for African Americans in the South.

Fashion pioneer Bethann Hardison is turning the camera on her own legacy. Documentary “Invisible Beauty,” co-directed by Hardison and Frédéric Tcheng (“Dior and I”), premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and later screened at Tribeca in the spring. The feature charts model and modeling agent Hardison’s impact on the fashion industry after having pushed the boundaries of what being a supermodel looks like.

At every setback, she spoke up and rallied her colleagues and clients in the industry to advance change. Now in her 70s, the Brooklyn native is writing her memoir, taking stock of her own legacy at a moment when the fashion industry was shaken by discrimination. Angela Bassett is now one of the most revered and respected actresses in Hollywood after multiple decades in the business. There were only two years between her breakthrough role in "Boyz n the Hood," to her Oscar-nominated role as Tina Turner in "What's Love Got to Do with It." Bassett not winning that year has long been considered one of the worst snubs in Oscar history. Despite Bassett's deserved stature in the industry, being tasked with finding substantial roles in 12 good movies was harder than anticipated. This goes to show that however talented and skilled a Black actress is, she will not necessarily get the opportunities for leading roles that she should rightfully have.
Despite this, Bassett has still worked with a wide range of filmmakers, including John Sayles, Wes Craven, John Singleton, Forest Whitaker, and Spike Lee, and has taken on a wide range of roles. She has worked with Laurence Fishburne three times,...

Progress in the face of systemic injustice does not occur naturally, it is urged along by sheer force of will — often by one radical visionary. In the case of the fashion industry’s racism, that person is Bethann Hardison. A trailblazing model in the 1970s, she became one of the most important agents of the ’90s, discovering the first male supermodel Tyson Beckford and mentoring Naomi Campbell and Iman. When fickle trends threatened to erase all of her hard work in the aughts, she boldly called out the industry’s blatantly racist casting practices, causing a seismic shift once and for all.

Moonhaven is now not returning to AMC+ for a second season after all. The streaming service has reversed the decision made in July to renew the futuristic thriller series. At the time, AMC Networks said that it was the most-watched AMC+ exclusive series. The show's cancellation is reportedly due to dramatic cost-cutting moves at AMC Networks.
Starring Emma McDonald, Dominic Monaghan, Amara Karan, Ayelet Zurer, Joe Manganiello, Kadeem Hardison, and Yazzmin Newell, the sci-fi series was created by Peter Ocko. It's set 100 years into the future at a colony on the moon.

AMC+ has canceled its sci-fi series “Moonhaven,” with the subscription video streaming service reversing its decision just four months ago to renew it for a second season.
The second season from creator and showrunner Peter Ocko was set to span six episodes and return to AMC+ in 2023. The cancellation comes amid programming write-downs and “large-scale layoff” at AMC Networks.
Upon its renewal in July, Dan McDermott, president of entertainment and AMC Studios for AMC Networks, said in a statement, “This is such an engaging and entertaining series, brilliantly conceived and run by Peter. The story is suspenseful, provocative and prescient, and features a phenomenal cast that delivers mesmerizing performances. What Peter and the team are crafting for Season 2 is next level, and the fans will be thrilled.”

The AMC Networks shake-up has laid claim to its first victim.
The AMC+ original series Moonhaven has been canceled, despite scoring a renewal for Season 2 earlier this year, Deadline reports.
Moonhaven launched on the streaming service on June 30 and AMC+ touted its strong performance as a reason for its speedy renewal.
The cast included Emma McDonald (Queens of Mystery), Dominic Monaghan (Lost), Amara Karan (Doctor Who), Ayelet Zurer (Losing Alice), Joe Manganiello (True Blood), Kadeem Hardison (Black Monday), and Yazzmin Newell (The Last Tree).
"Moonhaven centers on Bella Sway (McDonald), a lunar cargo pilot and smuggler 100 years in the future who finds herself accused of a crime and marooned on Moonhaven, a utopian community set on a 500 square mile Garden of Eden built on the Moon to find solutions to the problems that will soon end civilization on Mother Earth," reads the official logline.

The moon colony is closing down as AMC+ will not proceed with a second season of Moonhaven. Word of the cancellation comes four months after the dystonic sci-fi series was renewed for a second season and days after AMC Networks announced sweeping cost-cutting measures as CEO Christina Spade stepped down, which included laying off 20 of its U.S. staff, and write-downs for up to 475 million as it restructures its business. Up to 400 million of that is for content-related moves the company calls “strategic programming assessments”
In a SEC filing, AMC Networks said that “programming assessments pertain to a broad mix of owned and licensed content, including legacy television series and films that will no longer be in active rotation on the company’s linear or digital platforms.”

[Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for the ending of “Moonhaven” Season 1.]
As Season 1 of “Moonhaven” is ending, an entire society hangs in the balance. A generations-long plan is starting to crumble, there’s a coup in progress, and some new arrivals are making the people of a self-contained lunar colony question pretty much everything.
Most other shows would lean into or feed off that chaos. Yet, “Moonhaven” takes some time for Earther pilot Bella (Emma McDonald) to join Paul Sarno (Dominic Monaghan) and his family in a quiet meal where they all talk about what they value and what’s to come.
“We said that a lot in the writers room, to ‘Think like a mooner,'” showrunner Peter Ocko said. “You didn’t grow up in a harsh environment, and then come to Paradise. You were born in Paradise. And so we built a fantasy version of a human that’s really in touch with themselves, but not...

If the idea of the future presented in “Moonhaven” doesn’t feel like anything else in recent sci-fi storytelling, it’s probably because the list of visual and spiritual inspirations for the show is short on other examples of sci-fi storytelling.
Most of the six-episode opening season of the AMC+ drama concerns itself with the goings-on at a lunar colony centuries in the future. Removed from the preconceptions (and mounting strife) of Earther society, the third generation of isolated, AI-guided moon inhabitants have flourished, and are ready to share their secrets with those back on the Blue Dot in their sky.
It’s an easy enough premise to grasp, but creating this alternate world of “Moonhaven” meant sifting through an endless number of visual and logistical possibilities. Showrunner Peter Ocko looked to some Earthly examples as a spiritual guide.
“In the beginning, we were saying, ‘What does this city look like?...

Science fiction have always been uniquely fertile ground for political allegory. And sci-fi’s metaphorical potential only grows stronger when the politics and culture of real-life society start to resemble the surreality of a dark parallel universe or an alternate history.
That frisson of topicality is what made Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale” a critical and commercial success in its early seasons. “Handmaid’s” acclaim and viewership have anecdotally ticked down in subsequent seasons, but when the U.S. Supreme Court voted to nullify a half-century of reproductive freedom, dozens of women showed up to protest in “Handmaid’s” sadly iconic red-robe-and-white-blinder ensemble. It’s proof in essence that Margaret Atwood’s narrative, as vividly rendered in creator Bruce Miller’s imagery, has become more popular as political ideology than they ever were as stories.

I spent two years fighting the complications of desperately wanting to recommend AMC’s delightfully weird dramedy Lodge 49 and being generally unable to even describe the show. A slice of surfer noir by way of Thomas Pynchon, like Terriers without the gumshoe trappings, Lodge 49 probably never would have been a mainstream smash, but I don’t think it ever came close to maxing out on the audience that would have fallen for its laconic, philosophical noodling and its abundant, low-key charms.
AMC+’s new series Moonhaven isn’t really a lunar Lodge 49, but hailing from Lodge 49 showrunner Peter Ocko and boasting Lodge 49 creator Jim Gavin as writer and producer, Moonhaven has some of that elusive DNA. Even if one can sense Ocko and company trying to at least give AMC+ a promotable hook, Moonhaven is a show that...

As an enterprise, science fiction is loaded with temptation. The license to remake society in a specific image, with the added freedom of bending conventional logic in the process, makes overindulgence a very real possibility. At the same time, any futuristic story aiming for something operatic can feel rote if it doesn’t fully consider how changing conditions could really transform everyday life.
The most remarkable thing about “Moonhaven” — the latest original drama for the streaming service AMC+ — is the way it’s able to indulge its creative ambitions on an expansive canvas, all without losing sight of the individuals who make up the tableau. It finds that ultra-satisfying sweet spot between the radical and the familiar, a middle ground where discovery can happen over the course of an entire series and not just its opening chapter. Though it has its share of genre trappings, the broader conflict brewing around...

Oh yes, the Grown-ish crew is in the presence of a legend!
On an all-new Grown-ish, titled "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised," there will be some metaphorical torch-passing when Kadeem Hardison guest-stars.
Assuming you weren't there already if your parents raised you right, you'd know how significant it is that an Og from the originator of the fictional Black college experience, A Different World, is dropping by on a series that draws from its iconic status.
Seriously, you guys, A Different World ran so Grown-ish could fly!
The synopsis for tonight's episode teases that tensions between Zoey and Luca are running high once again. It's nothing new for these two former love birds, but this time around, it's less about their messy love lives and all about their fashion aspirations.
The pair is under some severe pressure to design an entirely new line for Anti-Muse thanks to the interest...
