This past spring, actor and comedian Drew Droege was performing his one-man show Happy Birthday Doug at the SoHo Playhouse in New York City, when it was cut short in March like the rest of live theater due to social distancing restrictions enforced to reduce harm during the Covid-19 pandemic. Now Droege (known to thousands of fans from his “Chloë” clips, Drunk History, Bob’s Burgers, RuPaul’s Aj and the Queen on Netflix) is thrilled to offer a recorded version of the performance filmed during quarantine on BroadwayHD from producer Michael Urie.

The Off Broadway run of Drew Droege’s well-received solo show Happy Birthday Doug was cut short by the Covid-19 shutdown, but a specially-filmed quarantine performance, produced by Michael Urie, is set to make its streaming debut.
Happy Birthday Doug, directed at the Soho Playhouse by Tom DeTrinis and directed for film and edited by Jim Hansen, will premiere on streaming service BroadwayHD September 24.
Written and performed by Droege, Happy Birthday Doug chronicles the 41st birthday of the title character. Droege plays Doug and all of his birthday party guests, a collection of gay men that includes “friends, exes, nightmares, tricks, and even a ghost.”
“As if I could be any more impressed by Drew Droege, he goes and achieves something phenomenal with Tom Detrinis and Jim Hansen, turning Happy Birthday Doug into a movie,” said producer Urie in a statement. “I’m so proud to premiere the movie on...

The screenwriter of First Man, Josh Singer, tells us how he got under the hood of astronaut Neil Armstrong to see what made him tick.
First Man tells the story of Neil Armstrong, the legendary engineer, pilot and astronaut who achieved one of the pinnacles of human history on July 21, 1969 when he became the first explorer to successfully land a spacecraft on the Moon and then set foot on the lunar surface. Armstrong’s journey (on which he was accompanied by Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins) was the culmination of years of research, experimentation, trial and error by the dedicated men and women of Nasa, a quest marked by several heart-rending tragedies yet yielding that historic “giant leap for mankind.”
Famously taciturn, Armstrong was a man of few words and often distant emotions -- characteristics driven home early in First Man when Armstrong (Ryan Gosling) and his...

For those of you genre fans out there always on the lookout for interesting horror and sci-fi films to enjoy from the comfort of your own home, March’s VOD selections feature several great indie movies that should make for some entertaining viewings this month.
Ava’s Possessions, a film I really dug out of last year’s SXSW Film Festival, is finally making its way onto VOD this Friday and Emelie, the babysitter thriller from Dark Sky Films, is also getting a digital release that day. Other titles arriving on VOD in early March include The Wave, Road Games and Camino.
The month’s VOD titles are being capped off by a film that I’ve been excited to see for some time, Baskin, which is being released by IFC Midnight on March 25th. Other notable VOD titles for March include Dudes & Dragons, You’re Killing Me, A Haunting...

A couple months ago, I wrote a piece for Indiewire about all the reasons I decided to make my web series, "The Impossibilities," rather than a feature film. Once the article went live, I was surprised and psyched by the number of web creators who reached out with questions about their web series. It became abundantly clear that there aren’t enough resources out there yet for this new field of independent filmmaking. There’s no manual. No masters degree you can get. Right now, our best resource is our fellow filmmakers. Read More: 10 Reasons You Should Make a Web Series Instead of an Indie Film In the last article, I talked about the how and the why of making a web series, but that's just half the battle. How do you make your show stand out in a sea of content? I crowdsourced this question to the creators of four independently produced online series,...

Rowan Hansen of Champaign, Illinois, has adored reading about superheroes from a young age. But as she started to grow older, the 11-year-old noticed something was missing from the pages of her comic books: women. Like a caped crusader, Rowan decided to take action, writing an eloquently worded letter to DC Comics questioning the lack of female superheroes and why current female characters, like Wonder Woman, don't have more roles in movies and TV, reports Today. "I love your comics, but I would love them a lot more if there were more girls," the fifth-grader wrote in her plea to DC.
